Cultural continuity, identity, and resilience among Indigenous youth: Honoring the legacies of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde.

This essay is an introduction to the thematic issue of Transcultural Psychiatry in honor of the work of Michael Chandler and Christopher Lalonde, developmental psychologists who made essential contributions to the study of identity and wellness among Indigenous youth in Canada and internationally. We outline their major contributions and illustrate the ways their innovative theory and methods have inspired decades of research, including the recent work presented in this issue, which addresses four broad themes: (1) the importance of a developmental perspective in mental health research; (2) th

Identity development and adjustment during emerging adulthood from a gender perspective.

Identity development is a key task during emerging adulthood. The goals of the present study are to validate the Spanish version of the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS) and to explore the relationship between identity dimensions and adjustment (flourishing and distress), from a gender perspective. The sample comprised 1502 Spanish university students (60.1% women). The results reveal that the DIDS is valid in the Spanish context and that significant gender differences were observed in some dimensions of identity development, with men scoring higher for identification with commit

Strategies to support midlife women to reduce their alcohol consumption: an Australian study using human-centred design.

Alcohol consumption is causally associated with long-term health-related consequences, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, and short-term harms, such as accidents and injuries. Alcohol consumption has increased among midlife women (aged 40-65) over the last two decades in high-income countries. This study aimed to centre women's voices by using co-design methodologies to investigate what women identify as strategies that could assist them and other women their age to reduce their alcohol consumption. Human-centred design workshops were undertaken with 39 women, and conventional qualitat

Redefining working identity in career transitions: The role of mindfulness and self-regulation.

Career transitions require individuals to fundamentally redefine their working identity-the amalgam of professional roles, relationships, and narratives that constitutes one's sense of self at work. Although Ibarra's seminal "test-and-learn" model has advanced the current understanding of how identity transitions unfold, the psychological mechanisms that enable or constrain this process remain underspecified. The purpose of this research paper is to develop a propositional theoretical framework that integrates mindfulness and self-regulation into the working identity transition process. Drawin

The Unlanguaged Self: Foundational Identity Languaging as a Semiotic Catalyst for Cross-Cultural Understanding.

Existing frameworks for cross-cultural understanding focus predominantly on learning about others while treating self-cultural awareness as a parallel capacity. We propose that this approach overlooks a structural upstream condition: the metacognitive articulation of one’s own foundational identity—one’s relationship to national origins and religious or philosophical grounding—which we term Foundational Identity Languaging (FIL). Drawing on Valsiner’s hierarchical model of semiotic mediation, we identify a specific failure mode in which hyper-generalized affective-semiotic fields—the deepest s

Do identity-focused treatments improve mental health outcomes? A critical examination of assumptions and evidence in diversity-oriented psychotherapy research.

Controversy exists over the use of standard evidence-based mental health treatments for diverse populations. In particular, there is some skepticism regarding their efficacy, as well as concerns over their potential harms, for clients from non-majority groups and in those who experience identity-related stressors and discrimination. Because of the perceived inadequacy of standard treatments, identity-focused therapies (IFTs) have been developed for diverse populations, including cultural adaptations of existing therapies and treatments focused on identity-related stressors in sexual, gender, a

Penile Pearls and Pearling: Characteristics and Social Identity from the Perspective of Forensic Pathologists.

Penile pearls are artificial implants placed beneath the skin of a penis to provide enhanced sexual experience for the partner or present a stigma of a particular social subgroup (e.g., prisoner, member of a gang). This genital modification is usually encountered in men of low socioeconomic status and prisoners who might (self) implant improvised pearls under poor sanitary conditions. We have only recently started to encounter penile pearls on autopsy, incidentally. The aim of this study was to analyze our autopsy cases with penile pearls to assess the characteristics of these subjects regardi

"Where my responsibility lies": Reflecting on medicine during the Holocaust to support personal and professional identity formation in health professions education.

OBJECTIVES: Physicians and the medical/scientific establishment during Nazism and the Holocaust committed egregious ethical violations including complicity with genocide. Critical reflection on this history serves as a powerful platform for scaffolding morally resilient professional identity formation (PIF) with striking relevance for contemporary health professions education and practice. Study aim was to explore the impact of an Auschwitz Memorial study trip within the context of a medicine during Nazism and the Holocaust curriculum on students' personal and PIF. METHODS: The authors analyz

Personality impressions predict intergroup trust behaviour of Southern Chinese.

This research aimed to investigate whether the personality impressions Southern Chinese formed on people who were from South China or North China predicted intergroup trust. Study 1 adopted the one-shot trust game to measure intergroup trust, in which the participant decided the amounts of money they would like to invest with the members of the ingroup and the members of the outgroup. After that, they assessed the personality traits of the two groups with a set of trait words. Results suggested that participants invested more average amounts of money with the outgroup than with the ingroup, an

Is an account of identity necessary for bioethics? What post-genomic biomedicine can teach us.

Is a theory of identity necessary for bioethics? In this paper I investigate that question starting from an empirical explication of identity based on post-genomics, in particular on epigenetics. After analysing whether the classic problems a theory of identity has to cope with (fictional transplants; conjoined twins; and definition of death) also affect the proposed epigenetic account of identity, I deal with three topics (the assumption of moral responsibility; decision maintenance in the case of advance directives; and the attribution of value to human beings at given developmental stages)

Increasingly Ruth: toward understanding sex reassignment.

Both the clinician and the patient present accounts of a 44-year-old male's search for a comfortable gender identity. The juxtaposition of these two perspectives illustrates many of the dilemmas inherent in the therapy of gender dysphoria. Ruth underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1976--one year after the assumption of a full-time female gender role. Six months after surgery, she made a serious suicide attempt. At age 50, she has now consolidated her feminine gender identity and has become a thoughtful, unusually honest, articulate person. The physician's "objective" and the patient's retrosp

Rethinking the nature of cruelty: The role of identity leadership in the Stanford Prison Experiment.

The Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) is one of the most famous studies in the history of psychology. For nearly a half century it has been understood to show that assigning people to a toxic role will, on its own, unlock the human capacity to treat others with cruelty. In contrast, principles of identity leadership argue that roles are unlikely to elicit cruelty unless leaders encourage potential perpetrators to identify with what is presented as a noble ingroup cause and to believe their actions are necessary for the advancement of that cause. Although identity leadership has been implicated

'Hooligans' abroad? Inter-group dynamics, social identity and participation in collective 'disorder' at the 1998 World Cup Finals.

During the 1998 Football World Cup Finals in France, English supporters were, once again, involved in major incidents of collective 'disorder'. Explanations for these incidents concentrated on the conflictual norms held by 'hooligans'. In contrast, Scottish supporters attending the tournament displayed norms of non-violence, explained by the popular press in terms of the absence of 'hooligans'. This study challenges this tendency to explain the presence or absence of 'disorder' in the context of football solely in terms of the presence or absence of 'hooligan' fans. Using data obtained from an

Dietary Practices as Dialogical Arenas: Identity Construction Among Youth From Han-Hui Intermarried Families.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the identity construction of youth in terms of dietary practice from Han-Hui-Muslim intermarried families in China. METHODS: Drawing on Hermans' Dialogical Self Theory, this research centers on dietary practices, a core symbolic field where cultural boundaries are enacted, to examine how multiple "I-positions" interact dynamically to shape hybrid identities. Empirical data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and ethnographic observations with 28 adolescents (9-17 years old, 16 boys and 12 girls) from 17 Han-Hui intermarried families (Ha

Identity fusion in children: A validation of the Dynamic Identity Fusion Index.

Identity fusion is a strong form of group alignment, in which individuals experience a visceral sense of oneness with the group, motivating extreme forms of pro-group action. However, little is known about the emergence and development of identity fusion across the lifespan, largely due to the absence of validated assessment tools for children. The Dynamic Identity Fusion Index (DIFI) has proven to be an effective and efficient measure of identity fusion in adults and the present study aims to validate its use in children. Our findings indicate that fusion with 'own family' versus an unfamilia

Youth's sense of belonging and associated risk and promotive factors: An ecological systems network analysis.

IntroductionBelonging is a powerful predictor of positive outcomes in youth, including greater well-being. There remains a pressing need to integrate influences across layers of organization within youths' developmental contexts to further understand how to enhance belonging amongst this demographic. Here, we investigate: (1) "How do risk and promotive factors converge in relation to belonging among youth?" and (2) "Do risk and promotive factors associate differently with belonging between boys and girls?".MethodsResponses from a community-based questionnaire were analyzed to establish ecologi

Rooting for Their Own Gender: Preschoolers' Selective Preference for Winners.

Children's social preferences are influenced by the relative status of other individuals, but also by their social identity and the degree to which those individuals are like them. Previous studies have investigated these aspects separately and showed that in some circumstances children prefer high-status individuals and own-gender individuals. Gender is a particularly interesting case to study because it is a strong dimension of social identity, but also one of the most prevalent forms of social hierarchy, with males conceptualised as superior to females, by adults and children alike. Here we

Anxiety about the social consequences of missed group experiences intensifies fear of missing out (FOMO).

Although fear of missing out (FOMO) has become a widely experienced phenomenon, the specific social situations and cognitions driving the FOMO experience have not yet been closely studied. Across seven experiments (N = 5,441), we find that FOMO occurs when people miss events involving valued social groups and is driven by the perception of missed bonding and concerns about how this may negatively affect their future relationships. People feel greater FOMO when they miss events involving valued others (vs. strangers or irrelevant social groups) and when events foster social bonding (vs. individ
