Social isolation during early development can lead to abnormal adult behavior. These behavioral deficits are often associated with disruptions of perineuronal nets (PNNs), a condensed form of the brain's extracellular matrix. PNNs regulate neuroplasticity by enwrapping parvalbumin-expressing (PV) interneurons, and abnormal maturation of PNN in early life has been associated with behavioral deficits reminiscent of those following isolation. Past studies demonstrate that social regrouping following early isolation can improve behavioral deficits, but the underlying mechanisms of this recovery ar

Social isolation is a risk factor for multiple mood disorders. Specifically, social isolation can remodel the brain, causing behavioral abnormalities, including sociability impairments. Here, we investigated social behavior impairment in mice following chronic social isolation stress (CSIS) and conducted a screening of susceptible brain regions using functional readouts. CSIS enhanced synaptic inhibition in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), particularly at inhibitory synapses of cholecystokinin (CCK)-expressing interneurons. This enhanced synaptic inhibition in the ACC was characterized by

Early life adversity has been related to a number of psychological disorders including mood and other disorders that can manifest as inappropriate or aggressive responses to social challenges. The present study used post-weaning social isolation (PSI) in rats, a model of early life adversity, to examine its effects on Fos protein expression produced by exposure to a novel social encounter. We have previously reported that the social encounter-induced increase in Fos expression in the medial prefrontal cortex observed in group-housed controls (GRP) was attenuated in rats that had experienced PS

High streets have been shown to be central to socio-economic activity, given their diverse residential, leisure, and commercial activities. This study explores the link between adolescent social isolation and proximity to, and land use mix in, high streets. Hypothesising that greater distance from high streets might increase social isolation, measured via social activities, friend contact frequency, and social support, we used multilevel modelling with data from the Millennium Cohort Study. We did not observe a relationship between proximity to high streets and these social isolation indicator

Both cardiovascular disease (CVD) and social health carry high health and economic burdens. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between social isolation, low social support, and loneliness with health service utilisation and survival after a CVD event among people living in Australia and New Zealand. Four electronic databases were systematically searched for the period before June 2020. Two reviewers undertook the title/abstract screen. One reviewer undertook a full-text screen and data extraction. A second author checked data extraction. Of 756 records, 25 papers m

BACKGROUND: Research in psychology demonstrates a strong link between state affect (moment-to-moment experiences of positive or negative emotionality) and trait affect (eg, relatively enduring depression and social anxiety symptoms), and a tendency to withdraw (eg, spending time at home). However, existing work is based almost exclusively on static, self-reported descriptions of emotions and behavior that limit generalizability. Despite adoption of increasingly sophisticated research designs and technology (eg, mobile sensing using a global positioning system [GPS]), little research has integr

For a long time, cervical dystonia (CD) has been characterised only by disturbances in motor functioning. Despite accumulating evidence for symptomatology in various non-motor domains, to date no study has investigated social cognition in CD. The aim of this study was to compare performance of CD patients and healthy controls in neurocognitive and socio-cognitive domain. Twenty-five non-depressed patients with CD and 26 healthy controls underwent neuropsychological testing. This involved assessment of cognitive status (general intellect, verbal memory, and executive function), and socio-cognit

Accurate and welfare-friendly methods for stress detection in livestock are essential for advancing animal husbandry practices. This study investigated the efficacy of fecal cortisol metabolites (FCM) as a non-invasive biomarker for assessing stress induced by social isolation in calves. Sixteen Tharparkar calves were subjected to an 8-day experimental period, which was divided into three distinct phases: pre-isolation (3 days), isolation (2 days) and reunion (3 days). The experimental design consisted of four replications, each with four calves. Behavioral and physiological observations were

Experiences of social isolation alter the developing social behavior of animals. Association preference is an important behavioral tendency for amphibian larvae (tadpoles) that exhibit social aggregation as a means of predator avoidance. For tadpoles that exhibit social aggregation, the learning period during exposure to conspecifics could be crucial. This study investigated how water quality and social experience influence association preferences to unfamiliar conspecifics in Bufo formosus (Eastern-Japanese common toad) tadpoles. Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, subject tadpoles were reared ei

Previous research suggests that social isolation induces changes in gene expression that encode a starvation-like brain state and reduce sleep. However, the extent to which social isolation alters behaviors via sex-specific brain changes is unclear. Here, we use Drosophila melanogaster to explore sex differences in isolation-induced behavioral and transcriptomic changes. Male and female adult flies were isolated for seven days, and multiple behavioral sex-based differences were identified through tests of activity, motivation, aggression, and sugar preference. RNA-seq analysis also identified

BACKGROUND: Rapidly changing family and migration contexts have made loneliness among older women in single-person households a key psychosocial issue. The literature has focused on loneliness as a lack of social interaction and isolation, with little attention to the emotional aspects of living alone and mediated forms of social contact.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the lived experiences of older women living alone in Kerala, India, including living alone, television engagement, emotional coping, memory, and relational continuity.
DESIGN: A qualitative reflexive thematic analysis with ph

Loneliness and social isolation are increasingly recognized as major determinants of health, with physiologic and behavioral effects that rival traditional biomedical risk factors. Populations commonly treated in podiatric practice, including older adults, patients with diabetes, rural residents, and veterans, are disproportionately affected by social isolation, yet its impact on foot and ankle outcomes remains underrecognized. Emerging evidence demonstrates that loneliness alters immune regulation, inflammatory signaling, pain perception, adherence behaviors, and healthcare utilization, all o

Oxylipins, signalling molecules derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids, act as key mediators controlling inflammatory processes. Ageing fuels the disruption of this network, promoting inflammageing. Social isolation, a common feature of ageing, may contribute to the emergence of pro-inflammatory responses, further aggravating conditions like cognitive decline and frailty. Here, we studied how repeated social isolation impacts inflammation-related oxylipin profiles in seven different organs and serum of aged mice. Additionally, we explored physical exercise as a tool to ameliorate age- and is

Social isolation is a stressor that impairs homeostatic neuroendocrine functions and is associated with the development of several mood disorders characterized by persistent negative affect. Persistent feelings of loneliness have been growing public health concerns for several years and were greatly exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem has grown so severe the U.S. Surgeon General recently declared loneliness to be an epidemic health concern that is associated with poor mental and somatic health outcomes. Therefore, identifying mechanisms of neuroadaptation that contri

AIM: Social isolation is a psychological state resulting from insufficient interpersonal interaction, marked by loneliness, helplessness, and unmet social needs following voluntary or involuntary social withdrawal. It may negatively impact the quality of life in elderly stroke patients. Due to its subtle nature and the varying clinical presentations and intervention needs across demographic groups, exploring its characteristics and influencing factors in this population holds important clinical value.
METHODS: A total of 376 elderly stroke patients were surveyed between January and October 20
