No Safe Place: A Qualitative Examination of Minority Stress Experiences Among 2SLGBTQ+ Individuals in the Waterloo Region.

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of socio-ecological stressors impacting 2S/LGBTQ+ individuals in the Waterloo Region in Ontario, Canada in the new wave of anti-queer rhetoric. Data was collected from semi-structured interviews with 2S/LGBTQ+ community members (N = 30) in the Waterloo Region. Braun & Clarke's six-step process of thematic analysis was employed. Minority stress theory was used to assess how socio-ecological factors (e.g., structural discrimination) contribute to manifestations of minority stress and how this health shapes health and well-being. Participant

"My Body is Betraying Me": Exploring the Stigma and Coping Strategies for Infertility Among Women Across Ethnic and Racial Groups.

Female infertility remains a taboo and carries stigma across various ethnic/racial communities. Infertility-related stigma impairs women's mental well-being, strains their family relationships, and deters them from seeking treatment. In this article, we seek to understand the perceived/self-stigma of infertility and stigma management through in-depth interviews with 29 women (White, African American, and Hispanic) who were facing fertility challenges. Taking an intersectional approach, we focused on how these women's experience of infertility and their stigma coping were shaped by certain gend

Incidental ostracism emerges from simple learning mechanisms.

Ostracism, or social exclusion, is widespread and associated with a range of detrimental psychological and social outcomes. Ostracism is typically explained as instrumental punishment of free-riders or deviants. However, this instrumental account fails to explain many of the features of real-world ostracism, including its prevalence. Here we hypothesized that ostracism can emerge incidentally (non-instrumentally) when people choose partners in social interactions, and that this process is driven by simple learning mechanisms. We tested this hypothesis in four experiments (n = 456) with economi

Evaluating associations between social risks and health care utilization in patients with chronic low back pain.

INTRODUCTION: Care and outcomes for patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP) are influenced by the social risk factors that they experience. Social risk factors such as food insecurity and housing instability have detrimental effects on patient health and wellness, healthcare outcomes, and health disparities. OBJECTIVES: This retrospective cross-sectional study examined how social risk factors identified in unstructured and structured electronic health record (EHR) data for 1,295 patients with cLBP were associated with health care utilization. We also studied the impact of social risk facto

Social network assessment in community-dwelling older persons: results from a study of three European populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In clinical practice, the status of living alone is often used as the only measure describing an older person's social network. We evaluated whether additional use of a brief social network measure provides relevant additional information in relation to social support and engagement. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 6982 community- dwelling adults 65 years or older living in London, UK; Hamburg, Germany; and Solothurn, Switzerland. Data were collected using the self-administered multidimensional Health Risk Appraisal Questionnaire. Multivariate models were used to analy

Peer Rejection and Group Autonomy in the Latency Stage: A Qualitative Analysis of Children's Voices in the Classroom Context.

Background/Objectives: Social rejection during the latency stage is a significant risk factor for children's emotional and social development. Whereas earlier research focused primarily on individual characteristics of rejected children, contemporary perspectives emphasize peer-group processes, including norm formation, hierarchies, and social status structures. Although autonomy has been widely examined as an individual developmental construct, less attention has been given to its possible collective expression within the classroom peer group. This study aimed to explore how children understa

Impact of Neighborhood Social Deprivation on Delays to Access for Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: Wait-Times and Clinical Consequences.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become the standard of care for severe aortic stenosis treatment. Exponential growth in demand has led to prolonged wait times and adverse patient outcomes. Social marginalization may contribute to adverse outcomes. Our objective was to examine the association between different measures of neighborhood-level marginalization and patient outcomes while on the TAVR waiting list. A secondary objective was to understand if sex modifies this relationship. METHODS AND RESULTS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study of

Relationship of social isolation with mental distress among older Korean Americans: The moderating role of social cohesion.

Social isolation has been associated with poor mental health outcomes, particularly for older immigrants who do not have a protective social environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of social isolation (living alone, marginal family ties and marginal friend ties) with mental distress and to examine the moderating role of social cohesion (family cohesion and community cohesion). We hypothesised that social isolation and social cohesion would be directly associated with mental distress and that social cohesion would buffer the influence of social isolation on me

Loneliness among older adults who have experienced homelessness: qualitative findings from the HOPE HOME study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is more common in older adults and those who face structural vulnerabilities, including homelessness. The homeless population is aging. We know little about loneliness among older adults who have experienced homelessness. We aimed to describe the loneliness experience among older adults who have experienced homelessness and the individual, social, and structural conditions that shaped these loneliness experiences. METHODS: We purposively sampled 22 older adults from the HOPE HOME study, a longitudinal cohort study among adults aged 50 years or older experiencing homeles

The Multicultural turn in psychotherapy: A philosophical and ethical reckoning.

The multicultural and social justice counseling (MSJC) movement has become a defining paradigm in psychotherapy, shaping ethics, training, and practice. While this evolution reflects important strides toward equity and inclusion, it also introduces philosophical tensions, particularly concerning ideological conformity, epistemological overreach, and the marginalization of empirically supported treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This critical position paper examines how Freirean and decolonial frameworks have transformed multiculturalism from a supplemental lens into a domin

From Pressure to Resilience: An Analytic Framework for the Psychosocial Well-Being of Religious Minorities in Authoritarian Contexts.

Religious minorities living under authoritarian governance face unique psychosocial stressors, yet these stressors remain understudied in public health. Using unregistered Protestant churches in China as a case study, this analytic essay examines how state-sponsored marginalization shapes mental health. Integrating public health, sociology of religion, and political science, this article proposes the authoritarian pressure-resilience (APR) framework. The framework combines a socioecological perspective with theories of minority stress and disciplinary power to explain pathways from structural

Moving towards More Diverse and Welcoming Conference Spaces: Data-Driven Perspectives from Biology Education Research Scholars.

Academic conferences are integral to the dissemination of novel research findings and discussion of pioneering ideas across all postsecondary disciplines. For some participants, these environments are spaces to develop new collaborations, research projects, and social bonds; however, for others, conferences can be a place of marginalization and outright hostility. To assess how diverse individuals experience conference spaces, we interpreted results from a conference climate survey filled out by 198 of 482 registrants of the Society for the Advancement of Biology Education Research (SABER) Wes

The right to be heard: exploring epistemic injustice in dementia care-A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Epistemic injustice, introduced by philosopher Miranda Fricker in 2007, refers to harm affecting individuals as knowers because of social prejudices and stereotyping. This leads to the partial or complete exclusion of certain individuals from knowledge building. People living with dementia are particularly vulnerable because cognitive impairments may reinforce assumptions about reduced credibility, marginalizing their voices in clinical, social, and family contexts and limiting opportunities to exercise epistemic agency. This research examines how people living with

Painful lives: Chronic pain experience among people who use illicit drugs in Montreal (Canada).

The current opioid crisis in North America has strengthened the boundary between "genuine chronic pain patients" and "drug addicts," though these categories are not mutually exclusive. Despite its high prevalence -more than double the general population rate- chronic pain among people who use illicit drugs (PWUD) remains an overlooked issue in both health and social sciences. Using the theoretical framework of sociology of illness experience, the aim of this qualitative study was to understand how the experience of illicit drug use shapes the chronic pain experience. We conducted in-depth inte

Drug use Discrimination Predicts Formation of High-Risk Social Networks: Examining Social Pathways of Discrimination.

Experiences of discrimination, or social marginalization and ostracism, may lead to the formation of social networks characterized by inequality. For example, those who experience discrimination may be more likely to develop drug use and sexual partnerships with others who are at increased risk for HIV compared to those without experiences of discrimination. This is critical as engaging in risk behaviors with others who are more likely to be HIV positive can increase one's risk of HIV. We used log-binomial regression models to examine the relationship between drug use, racial and incarceration

Pathways, consequences, and community-proposed responses to school discontinuation in rural eastern Uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Education is a social determinant of health, and incomplete schooling is associated with poorer sexual and reproductive health, psychosocial distress, and reduced economic opportunity. In Africa, many young people leave school before completing their educational cycle, yet qualitative evidence on the social and health consequences of discontinuation and on what affected communities view as appropriate responses remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To explore perspectives on the pathways, consequences, and proposed responses to school discontinuation in rural eastern Uganda. METHODS: This

Health and Social Vulnerabilities Among Unstably Housed and Homeless Young Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The role of housing as a social driver of health is well-established, with stable housing being an important factor in reducing health inequities. During developmentally critical periods such as young adulthood, unstable housing and related social marginalization have profound effects on development and later health, social, and economic wellbeing. This exploratory study analyzed data from a population-based, longitudinal sample of young adults (average age 31 years) from Washington State (n = 755) to compare health and economic impacts of the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus

A Qualitative Exploration of Various Stigmas Impacting HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake Among African American Young Adults.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has promise for reducing racial/ethnic HIV disparities; yet, acceptance among African Americans remains low. PrEP-related stigmas may impact uptake, but this is understudied. This study examines mechanisms by which stigma impacts PrEP acceptance among various priority African American populations. Focus group data from 63 African American young adults (aged 18-29 years) in Louisville, Kentucky, explore how various stigmas impact attitudes toward PrEP. Data were analyzed using grounded theory analytic techniques. PrEP stigma, HIV stigma, sexual behavior stigma, a

Intimate Partner Violence and Structural Violence in the Lives of Incarcerated Women: A Mixed-Method Study in Rural New Mexico.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a common feature in the lives of incarcerated women returning to rural communities, enhancing their risk of mental ill-health, substance use, and recidivism. Women's experiences of IPV intersect with challenges across multiple social-ecological levels, including risky or criminalizing interpersonal relationships, geographic isolation, and persistent gender, racial, and economic inequities. We conducted quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with 99 incarcerated women in New Mexico who were scheduled to return to micropolitan or non-core areas within
