Prediction of Crowd Behavior in Holy Sites: Psychological, Social, and Risk Perception Factors among Pilgrims .

BACKGROUND: Large religious gatherings such as Hajj involve complex psychological and social processes that influence pilgrims' experiences and crowd behavior. This study examined risk perception, psychosocial factors, and adaptive crowd behavior among pilgrims, explored the relationships among these variables, and evaluated their predictive contribution to crowd behavior. METHODS: A descriptive, correlational, and predictive cross-sectional design was employed. A purposive sample of 407 pilgrims completed validated measures of risk perception, psychosocial factors, and crowd behavior. Descri

Social anxiety and emotional body perception in context: Behavioral congruence effects with exploratory N170 interaction.

BACKGROUND: Emotional body postures are interpreted in relation to their contexts, but whether social anxiety is associated with altered contextual integration or selective differences across posture valences remains unclear. METHODS: Two studies used related posture-context emotion-recognition paradigms. Study 1 examined recognition accuracy and reaction time for positive, neutral, and negative postures presented in positive, neutral, and negative contexts in 69 participants with high or low social anxiety (HSA/LSA). Study 2 explored P1, N170, and late positive potential responses to positiv

The aggressive face of melasma: unveiling the influence of upper lip pigmentation on social perception.

INTRODUCTION: Although melasma leads to emotional distress and quality-of-life reduction, indigenous cultures practice female facial tattooing. Facial cues influence personality trait inferences and attractiveness ratings. Skin lesions have been shown to alter gaze patterns, emotion perception, and social evaluations. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate melasma's impact on visual attention, perceived attractiveness, and social evaluations, considering distinct anatomical areas. Additionally, we sought to compare perceptions of traditional facial tattoos due to their purposeful placement. MATER

Functional selectivity for social interaction perception in the human superior temporal sulcus during natural viewing.

Recognizing others' social interactions is a crucial human ability. Using simple stimuli, previous studies have shown that social interactions are selectively processed in the superior temporal sulcus (STS), but prior work with movies has suggested that social interactions are processed in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), part of the theory of mind network. It remains unknown to what extent social interaction selectivity is observed in real world stimuli when controlling for other covarying perceptual and social information, such as faces, voices, and theory of mind. The current study util

The relationship between the perception of social support and post-stroke depression in hospitalized patients.

In our study we examined the relationship between the perceived adequacy of social support and post-stroke depression in 76 hospitalized Australian patients. Social support or the perception of its lack, particularly from a spouse care-giver, was associated significantly with both the presence and severity of depressive disorder. Furthermore, depressed patients who perceived their support to be inadequate had a longer duration of depressive illness than depressed patients who perceived their support in a more favorable light. We conclude that following stroke, perception of social support from

Development of the social perception pathway across the third trimester of gestation and perinatal transition.

Babies display social perceptual skills within hours of birth which may indicate that the neural predecessors of such skills have prenatal origins. However, the putative fetal neural infrastructure supporting these skills remains unexplored. Data from 497 participants scanned between 28-44 weeks postmenstrual age were examined to map the development of intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) within the proto social pathway (pSP), encompassing the superior temporal sulcus (STS), a region implicated in processing multimodal social stimuli later in development, and the proto ventral pathway (pVP)

Impact of local COVID-19 incidence on health care personnel risk perception and social activity.

BACKGROUND: Risk perceptions and social activities shaped SARS-CoV-2 transmission. However, most related studies are cross-sectional, often neglecting correlated outcomes and dropout bias. We assessed relationships between local COVID-19 incidence levels and health care personnel (HCP) risk perceptions and social activity count. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using monthly surveys (December 2021-May 2022) at an academic health care system (n = 1,590 HCP). COVID-19 incidence was categorized into 4 levels, from low to high. Five risk perception measures (scaled 1-4) and activi

No one sees you quite like I do: The social relations model in personality perception.

The Social Relations Model (SRM) offers a comprehensive framework for examining how individuals perceive personality traits in others, decomposing personality perceptions into perceiver, target, and relationship effects. These components demonstrate meaningful variation across traits, time, classes of relationships, and levels of acquaintance. Nevertheless, while target and perceiver effects have been well-documented, the relationship effect, capturing idiosyncratic, dyad-specific personality perceptions, remains underexplored despite accounting for substantial variance and predicting meaningf

Perception of Social Support and Disease Acceptance Among Patients Undergoing Cardiac Rehabilitation-Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), the leading cause of mortality worldwide, require a multidisciplinary approach, with cardiac rehabilitation being a recommended component. The rehabilitation process may be directly influenced by social support, which enhances motivation to cope with the disease and fosters its acceptance. AIMS: This study aims to assess the level of social support among patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation and its impact on disease acceptance. METHODS: The study included a sample of 150 patients currently participating in cardiac rehabilitation. Data were col

A Further Characterisation of the Neuropsychological Profile, Social Perception, and Academic Skills in Sotos Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by physical overgrowth and by frequent intellectual disability and comorbidity with neurodevelopmental disorders. A recent study documented a specific cognitive profile of SoS. However, further research is needed to replicate and expand these findings to other neuropsychological domains, including social perception. Moreover, numeracy has long been considered as a weakness in SoS, but inconsistent evidence asks for a further assessment of academic skills. METHOD: This single-cohort, cross-sectional study enrolled 28 par

Social Satisfaction and Living Alone: Predictors of Self-Perception of Mental Health Improvement After Psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis recovery can accompany social and self-stigma for the survivor, which can interfere with the person reaching their personal recovery goals. We hypothesized that there would be a strong association between social satisfaction and self-perceived mental health improvement, and that living alone would be a risk factor to self-perceived improvement. STUDY DESIGN: Our strengths-based quantitative study aims to identify the most important factors to psychosis survivors for their mental health recovery. Guided saccades modulate face- and body-sensitive activation in the occipitotemporal cortex during social perception.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has identified distinct brain regions in ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC) and lateral occipitotemporal cortex (LOTC) that are differentially activated by pictures of faces and bodies. Recent work from our laboratory has shown that the strong LOTC activation evoked by bodies in which the face is occluded is attenuated when the occlusion is removed. We hypothesized that this attenuation may occur because subjects preferentially fixate upon faces when present in the scene. Here, we experimentally manipulated subjects' fixations while they viewed

Exploring Applicants' Perceptions of the Social Media Presence of Orthopedic Surgery Residency Programs.

Introduction In recent years, medical students and residents across the country have begun to utilize social media as a tool to connect. With more access to technology than ever before, medical students are using residency social media pages to find out more information about the culture of residency programs. Global pandemics, such as COVID-19, assisted in precipitating these changes in resident recruitment efforts due to truncated in-person interactions and limited sub-internship rotations. Additionally, the transition to virtual interviews further pushed medical students to find new ways to

From Prominent to Proportionate: Social Perceptions of Patients With Prominent Ears Undergoing Otoplasty.

Prominent ears are one of the most common congenital craniofacial differences in children. While not functionally impairing, their visibility can cause psychosocial distress, particularly from peer ridicule. Otoplasty is frequently performed to modify auricular projection and normalize appearance; however, its effect on social perception by lay observers remains unclear. This study evaluated how otoplasty influences public perception of pediatric patients. Preoperative and postoperative photographs of 2 patients were rated by 998 adult respondents through an online survey. Participants evaluat

The Perceptions and Expectations Toward the Social Responsibility of Hospitals and Organizational Commitment of Nursing Staff.

BACKGROUND: The labor rights of medical workers in hospitals in Taiwan have been a key issue of discussion and controversy in recent years. Generally, poor work conditions and manpower shortages in hospitals have resulted in a vicious circle of severely overworked medical and healthcare staff and chronically low staffing and retention rates. PURPOSE: This study employed corporate social responsibility as the conceptual framework of the social responsibility of hospitals to examine the perceptions and expectations of nurses toward the social responsibility practices of the hospital where they
