Development and validation of the Social Emotional Assets (SEA) scale: a culturally responsive measure of social-emotional competencies in emerging adulthood.

Social emotional competencies in children and youth are associated with academic and psychological wellbeing. However, application to post-secondary students has been limited, and measures have been centered on the white, middle-class experience. Emerging adulthood is a time of heightened emotionality, instability, and relationship vulnerability. Therefore, the development of social emotion competences in post-secondary students could promote healthy self-regulatory and interpersonal skills. The aim of this work was to develop a culturally sensitive measure of social and emotional competencies

Friend or foe: effects of social experience and genetic line on responses of young gilts in a social challenge paired interaction test.

The increased focus on group housing of sows in commercial pig production emphasises the importance of saving appropriate gilts which later become sows that are well-adapted to group housing systems. This study aimed to assess the short-term effects of social mixing experience and genetic line on social and exploration responses of young gilts in standardised 3-min social challenge paired interaction tests. The study included 96 gilts, from 26 litters, of two different genetic lines (Swedish Yorkshire and Dutch Yorkshire). These lines were chosen because the dam lines have been selected in gro

Assessing social competence and antisocial behaviors in children: item response theory analysis of the home and community social behavior scales.

BACKGROUND: The Home and Community Social Behavior Scales (HCSBS) is a rating scale that assesses social competence and antisocial behavior among children and youths between ages 5-18. The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the HCSBS by applying item response theory (IRT). METHODS: The HCSBS was completed by parents of 551 Norwegian children refereed to three independent interventions towards problem behaviors. Data used in this study was collected before the interventions started. IRT was carried out in R version 4.0.0 to investigate HCSBS items, subscales and

Neural correlates of context-dependent extinction recall in social anxiety disorder: relevance of intrusions in response to aversive social experiences.

BACKGROUND: There are phenomenological similarities between social anxiety disorder (SAD) and posttraumatic stress disorder, such as a provoking aversive event, posttraumatic stress symptoms (e.g. intrusions) in response to these events and deficient (context-dependent) fear conditioning processes. This study investigated the neural correlates of context-dependent extinction recall and fear renewal in SAD, specifically in patients with intrusions in response to an etiologically relevant aversive social event. METHODS: During functional magnetic resonance imaging a two-day context-dependent fe

Virtual social support buffers stress response: An experimental comparison of real-life and virtual support prior to a social stressor.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Face-to-face and text-based social support have been shown to attenuate stress responses in past studies. Yet as social interactions increasingly take place online by means of virtual humans, our objective was to examine whether different forms of social support (virtual vs. real) prior to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) would also decrease stress. Additionally, the effect on subsequent real-life social behaviors (helping and approach) was evaluated while controlling for affective states and social presence. METHODS: 56 participants were either supported by an a

Social norm processing in adult social phobia: atypically increased ventromedial frontal cortex responsiveness to unintentional (embarrassing) transgressions.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the neural underpinnings of generalized social phobia, which is defined by a persistent heightened fear of social disapproval. Using event-related functional MRI (fMRI), the authors examined whether the intent of an event, which mediates the neural response to social disapproval in healthy individuals, differentially affects response in generalized social phobia. METHOD: Sixteen patients with generalized social phobia and 16 healthy comparison subjects group-matched on age, gender, and IQ underwent fMRI scans while reading stories that involved neutral social

Affiliation moderates the effects of social threat on stress-related cardiovascular responses: boundary conditions for a laboratory model of social support.

The authors tested the hypothesis that the response-attenuating effects of affiliation under stress are limited to conditions that involve high social threat. Ninety-six young adult women were exposed to standardized psychological challenges in one of four conditions that involved two levels of social affiliation (alone or accompanied by a close friend) and two levels of social threat (variations in the social behavior and perceived status of the experimenter). Social affiliation was associated with attenuated blood pressure responses to the challenges but only under conditions of high social

"An illustrative socio-biological cascade of the concentric model for health-bound networks: social determinants, social support and biological responses".

INTRODUCTION: Health has been associated with social support. Supported patients with complex health issues have a better chance of living healthier, longer lives and enjoying a better quality of life. Research indicates that physical, mental, and emotional health are connected to both biological and social determinants. METHODS: This paper proposes a conceptual, society-to-biology model, the Concentric Model for Health-Bound Networks, that explores the complexity of social support and integrates the foundational principles of systems biology and systems thinking. This transdisciplinary model

Behavior, BDNF and epigenetic mechanisms in response to social isolation and social support in middle aged rats exposed to chronic stress.

Social deprivation can be stressful for group-living mammals. On the other hand, an amazing response of these animals to stress is seeking social contact to give and receive joint protection in threatening situations. We explored the effects of social isolation and social support on epigenetic and behavioral responses to chronic stress. More specifically, we investigated the behavioral responses, corticosterone levels, BDNF gene expression, and markers of hippocampal epigenetic alterations (levels of H3K9 acetylation and methylation, H3K27 methylation, HDAC5, DNMT1, and DNMT3a gene expressions

Mind the social feedback: effects of tDCS applied to the left DLPFC on psychophysiological responses during the anticipation and reception of social evaluations.

The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) is implicated in anticipatory (i.e. during anticipation of emotional stimuli) and online (i.e. during confrontation with emotional stimuli) emotion regulatory processes. However, research that investigates the causal role of the lDLPFC in these processes is lacking. In this study, 74 participants received active or sham transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the lDLPFC. Participants were told strangers evaluated them. These (rigged) social evaluations were presented, and in 50% of the trials, participants could anticipate the valenc

Resisting aggression in social contexts: The influence of life-course persistent antisocial behavior on behavioral and neural responses to social feedback.

Early adulthood has long been recognized as a potential turning point for the development of antisocial behavior, due to changes in social contexts and ongoing psychological and neurobiological maturation. However, it remains unclear how different developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior, their neural underpinnings, and individual differences in psychopathic traits may help explain the distinct developmental outcomes of individuals who persist in or desist from antisocial behavior in early adulthood - such as how they respond to others in social contexts. Therefore, in the current stu

Acetaminophen does not affect cardiac and brain responses to social rejection but seems to attenuate behavioral adaptation in a social judgment task.

The present study examined the effect of Acetaminophen on the painful experience of social rejection by examining brain, cardiac and behavioral measures reflecting different aspects of social feedback processing. Healthy students (N = 72), after ingesting either Acetaminophen or a placebo, performed a social judgment paradigm (SJP), in which they could be expectedly or unexpectedly rejected or accepted. During the task, cardiac and brain responses to different types of feedback were measured, as well as expectancies relating to the given feedback. Enhanced cardiac deceleration was found after

Biochemical Adaptation and Telomere Shortening in Javanese Macaques in Response to Social Isolation.

In this study, we examined changes in hormonal status, oxidative status, antioxidant defense, and peripheral blood leukocyte telomere length in male Javanese macaques (Macaca fascicularis) following transfer from group housing to individual cages as a model of social isolation. The study was performed in ten male Javanese macaques aged 11-17 years using a longitudinal design: the parameters were assessed in the same animals before transfer to individual cages and after 60 days of isolation. Cognitive predictors of response to interpersonal and social rhythm therapy in mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: There has been increasing interest in examining the potential moderating effects that cognitive functioning has on treatment outcome in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Therefore, the aim of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between baseline cognitive function and treatment outcome in individuals with mood disorders who completed 12 months of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT), and were randomised to receive adjunctive cognitive remediation (CR) or no additional intervention. METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with mood disord

Virtual/Mobile Overdose Response in Canada: A Social Return on Investment Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The overdose epidemic continues to be one of the leading causes of death in North America and continues to contribute to high healthcare costs. Although harm reduction initiatives have significantly reduced the aforementioned costs, there is a dearth of evidence regarding overdose response hotlines and applications. We aim to evaluate the social return on investment from a payer perspective of one such overdose response hotline, Canada's National Overdose Response Service, and its implications for service users, service operators, the Canadian healthcare system, and program funders

Psychopathic traits and social brain responses during moral evaluation in adolescence.

Brain functioning underlying moral decision-making in adolescents with psychopathic traits is relatively less understood. This fMRI study examined the neural correlates of moral decision-making in relation to psychopathic traits, as measured by the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI), in a sample of 16 community-recruited youth (mean age=13.94) with reported behavior problems. Participants viewed images that depicted a moral violation, a conflict with no moral violation, and a neutral scenario. We analyzed activation, seed-to-voxel, and seed-to-seed functional connectivity using a social

GABA and glutamate response to social processing: a functional MRS feasibility study.

Several studies have suggested that atypical social processing in neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g. autism) is associated with differences in excitation and inhibition, through changes in the levels of glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). While associations between baseline metabolite levels and behaviours can be insightful, assessing the neurometabolic response of GABA and glutamate during social processing may explain altered neurochemical function in more depth. Thus far, there have been no attempts to determine whether changes in metabolite levels are detectable using functional

Neuronal responses in social-emotional information processing in impulsive aggressive individuals.

How we perceive and interpret signals from others' behavior, known as social-emotional information processing (SEIP), is key when responding to social threat. Impulsively aggressive individuals, behaviorally, demonstrate impaired SEIP for encoding relevant social stimuli, attribution of intent of the other person in the interaction, and responding negatively to potentially threatening social situations. In this study, we sought to explore how neural processing differs between healthy controls (HC) and individuals with impulsive aggressive behavior (individuals with Intermittent Explosive Disor
