A Case-Control Study to Identify Community Venues Associated with Genetically-clustered, Multidrug-resistant Tuberculosis Disease in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: The majority of tuberculosis transmission occurs in community settings. Our primary aim in this study was to assess the association between exposure to community venues and multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis. Our secondary aim was to describe the social networks of MDR tuberculosis cases and controls. METHODS: We recruited laboratory-confirmed MDR tuberculosis cases and community controls that were matched on age and sex. Whole-genome sequencing was used to identify genetically clustered cases. Venue tracing interviews (nonblinded) were conducted to enumerate community venues

Stakeholder conceptualisation of multi-level HIV and AIDS determinants in a Black epicentre.

HIV has reached epidemic proportions among African Americans in the USA but certain urban contexts appear to experience a disproportionate disease burden. Geographic information systems mapping in Philadelphia indicates increased HIV incidence and prevalence in predominantly Black census tracts, with major differences across adjacent communities. What factors shape these geographic HIV disparities among Black Philadelphians? This descriptive study was designed to refine and validate a conceptual model developed to better understand multi-level determinants of HIV-related risk among Black Phila

Different historical approaches to leprosy in the Asia-Pacific.

Leprosy, or Hansen disease, is a greatly feared infection of Mycobacterium leprae whose neuropathy induces disfiguring injuries subject to great social stigma. Historically, Australia largely confined its few leprosy patients to remote leper colonies (leprosaria) or in quarantine hospitals. The Philippines and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) had much larger infected populations in the early 20th century and required alternative approaches. The US military government of the Philippines chose actively to identify and confine all leprosy patients to segregated colonies on remote islands. Al

Social determinants of adult sex ratios and racial/ethnic disparities in transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in the USA.

In Black population centres in the USA, adult sex ratios (ASRs) are strongly female-biased primarily due to high male incarceration and early mortality rates. I explore the system of social determinants that shape these ASRs, and describe their apparent consequences. Evidence suggests that female-biased ASRs play a role, along with racial residential segregation, to increase mixing between core and peripheral members of sexual networks, facilitating transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted infections. Unique historical factors underlie Black male incarceratio

Theorizing "cultural signatures" in worldwide personal networks.

BACKGROUND: This paper advances the theory of "cultural signatures" in personal networks by integrating Goodenough's concept of propriospect-the individual's internalized model of culture-with a personal network approach to social structure. We define cultural signatures as the structural traces left by cultural institutions-such as associations, religious practices, or educational organizations-in personal networks. To illustrate this theoretical framework, we revisit Fredrik Barth's ethnography of Sohar, an Omani town characterized by multiculturality and gender segregation. Using the propri

Similar processing of novelty in rat dorsal and intermediate CA1 despite differences in spatial tuning.

Elucidating the fundamental neural mechanisms of hippocampal information processing is necessary for understanding memory formation and related brain disorders. Differences in hippocampal genetics, anatomy, and connectivity across the longitudinal axis suggest functional heterogeneity in this structure. The dorsal pole is suggested to be primarily involved in spatial processing, whereas the ventral pole is implicated in emotional processing. Connectivity and genetic studies show this functional segregation is more prominent near their respective poles and weaker toward the intermediate region.

Charles R. Drew (1904-1950): A Pioneer of Blood Banking.

Dr. Charles Richard Drew, a pioneering figure in modern blood banking and 20th-century medicine, revolutionized blood donation and storage processes, fundamentally shaping the field as we know it today. His extensive work with blood and plasma, combined with an innovative approach to reducing contamination, laid the foundation for modern standards in safety and efficiency. His efforts were instrumental in creating blood banks that supported soldiers during World War II. Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Drew was a tireless advocate for racial equality, challenging the widespread discrim

Racial and economic segregation and diabetes mortality in the USA, 2016-2020.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between racial and economic segregation and diabetes mortality among US counties from 2016 to 2020. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional ecological study that combined county-level diabetes mortality data from the National Vital Statistics System and sociodemographic information drawn from the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (n=2380 counties in the USA). Racialized economic segregation was measured using the Index Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) for income (ICEincome), race (ICErace) and combined income and race (

Xenophobia, ethnic community, and immigrant youths' friendship network formation.

Immigrant youth often rebuild their friendships and other social networks after arriving in a new country. The difficulties involved can threaten their psychosocial development. Formation of social networks needs to be understood within the macro sociocultural context that shapes the experience. Nonetheless, the current literature on social network formation rarely captures that context. Knowledge about immigrant youths' social network, for example, is often embedded in assimilation, ethnic identity, and adaptation literature. This paper examines how the sociocultural context enables immigrant

Neural correlates of social withdrawal and preference for solitude in adolescence.

Social isolation during development, especially in adolescence, has detrimental but incompletely understood effects on the brain. This study investigated the neural correlates of preference for solitude and social withdrawal in a sample of 2809 youth [median (IQR) age = 12.0 (1.1) years, 1440 (51.26%) females] from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. Older youth whose parents had mental health issues more frequently preferred solitude and/or were socially withdrawn (β = 0.04 to 0.14, CI = [0.002, 0.19], P < 0.05), both of which were associated with internalizing and externalizing

Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Home Health Use Among People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: Measuring Their Association With Neighborhood Racial Segregation.

IMPORTANCE: Black people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) report poor health and lower service use compared with their White counterparts. Structural racism, neighborhood segregation in particular, has been identified as a potential barrier to equitable service use, but empirical investigations remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between race/ethnicity and neighborhood-level segregation on the use of outpatient occupational therapy and physical therapy and home health services among people with IDD. DESIGN: A secondary data analysis, using weighted two

Refugees' admission to mental health institutions in Norway: Is there an ethnic density effect?

Some recent European research claims that immigrants settle in urban areas with low scores on level-of-living conditions and a high prevalence of health-risk factors, and that these settlement patterns adversely affect their health. Other studies question the association between immigrant segregation and area deprivation on one hand, and negative health outcomes on the other hand, and identify possible beneficial effects of segregation, specifically the ethnic density effect. This paper aims to explore the possible ethnic density effect among refugees, a sub-population that often appears relat

A circuit of COCH neurons encodes social-stress-induced anxiety via MTF1 activation of Cacna1h.

The hippocampus is a temporal lobe structure critical for cognition, such as learning, memory, and attention, as well as emotional responses. Hippocampal dysfunction can lead to persistent anxiety and/or depression. However, how millions of neurons in the hippocampus are molecularly and structurally organized to engage their divergent functions remains unknown. Here, we genetically target a subset of neurons expressing the coagulation factor c homolog (COCH) gene. COCH-expressing neurons or COCH neurons are topographically segregated in the distal region of the ventral CA3 hippocampus and expr

[Psychological aspects of professional work at old age (author's transl)].

Already in early gero-hygienic studies the social influenceability of psychic health was to be discovered as conceptual conclusion. Investigations on old-age people also confirm the far-reaching dependence of psycho-physical health of old age on social factors of influence. Favourable living conditions result in satisfaction, whereas hospitalization, segregation and qualifications deficiencies promote psychic disorders. Longitudinal section studies likewise revealed the effects of the socio-economic psychic disorders. Longitudinal section studies likewise revealed the effects of the socio-econ

The Traumatic Impact of Structural Racism on African Americans.

Many African Americans in the United States have been impacted by structural racism since slavery and continue to experience trauma because of health disparities, economic disadvantages, and segregation. This article will define race, racism, and structural racism, which has perpetuated trauma for African Americans. The authors present a theory called Post Traumatic Slavery Syndrome (PTSS) by Dr. Joy DeGruy, a social work researcher, to explain why many African Americans continue to experience trauma. PTSS is a condition that exists as a consequence of multigenerational oppression of African a

Informal Employment Trajectories as A Social Determinant of Mental Limitations in Older Age in Uruguay: A Gender-Sensitive Analysis.

This study examines the association between informal employment trajectories and the presence of mental limitations in old age in Uruguay. Using retrospective data from a nationally representative survey, informal employment trajectories for individuals aged 60 and older were reconstructed. Mental limitations were measured through two functional indicators: difficulties in learning and applying knowledge, and limitations in social relationships. Logistic regression models (odds ratios) were estimated separately by sex, adjusting for age, education, chronic disease, income, and labor force part

Speech-in-noise perception in autistic adolescents with and without early language delay.

Speech-in-noise perception seems aberrant in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Potential aggravating factors are the level of linguistic skills and impairments in auditory temporal processing. Here, we investigated autistic adolescents with and without language delay as compared to non-autistic peers, and we assessed speech perception in steady-state noise, temporally modulated noise, and concurrent speech. We found that autistic adolescents with intact language capabilities and not those with language delay performed worse than NT peers on words-in-stationary-noise perception.

Altered brain activity and functional networks in school-age boys with severe haemophilia A: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: Microstructural alterations of brain structure in haemophilic boys were found in our previous study. AIM: We investigated alterations of brain function in school-age boys with severe haemophilia A (HA) with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). METHODS: We obtained rs-fMRI scans from 24 boys with HA and 25 demographically matched healthy children. Spontaneous brain activity parameters were calculated. Graph theoretical analyses on rs-fMRI data at the global and regional levels were performed. Two-sample t tests were used to analyze differences, and corr

Casting a Health Equity Lens on Endocrinology and Diabetes.

As endocrinologists we have focused on biological contributors to disparities in diabetes, obesity and other endocrine disorders. Given that diabetes is an exemplar health disparity condition, we, as a specialty, are also positioned to view the contributing factors and solutions more broadly. This will give us agency in contributing to health system, public health, and policy-level interventions to address the structural and institutional racism embedded in our medical and social systems. A history of unconsented medical and research experimentation on vulnerable groups and perpetuation of eug
