On the lowest rung of the ladder: How social exclusion, perceived economic inequality and stigma increase homeless people's resignation.

Despite the relevance of social exclusion and economic inequality for homelessness, empirical studies investigating how these issues relate to homeless people's psychological well-being are scarce. We aimed to fill this gap by conducting two quasi-experimental studies on homeless and non-homeless groups. The first study (N = 200) showed that homeless (vs. non-homeless) people presented higher levels of resignation, characterized by depression, alienation, helplessness, and unworthiness (Williams, 2009). The second study (N = 183) replicated the findings from Study 1 and showed that perceived e

Perceived social support and depression among people living with HIV in China: roles of stigma and adherence self-efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: People living with HIV (PLHIV) are a high-risk group for depression. In particular, the prevalence and burden of depression is higher and more severe among PLHIV in developing and less-developed countries. There is evidence that perceived social support has a positive impact on reducing the occurrence of depression, and high stigma and low adherence self-efficacy are barriers to the effectiveness of social support for depressed PLHIV. However, how these risks affect the effect of social support on depression still needs further identification. METHODS: Between 2017 and 2018, a t

Cochlear implant aesthetics and its impact on stigma, social interaction and quality of life: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Awareness of the benefits of cochlear implants is low, and barriers such as fear of surgery and ongoing rehabilitation have been noted. Perceived stigma associated with hearing loss also plays a key role, with many adults not wanting to appear old or be identified as a person with a disability. In effect, a cochlear implant makes deafness visible. New technologies have led to a smaller external profile for some types of cochlear implants, but qualitative assessments of benefit have not been explored. This study will examine cochlear implant aesthetics and cosmetics, and its impac

Human Tail: A Benign Condition Hidden Out of Social Stigma and Shame in Young Adult - A Case Report and Review.

A human tail is a rare congenital anomaly which mostly presents immediately after birth or in early childhood. Here, we are presenting a case of 17-year-old male who presented with 18-cm long tail, which was hidden till this age because of social stigma and shame. This is longest human tail reported of our knowledge. This patient presented to us because he started having difficulty, pain while sitting, and discomfort in daily activities because of long tail. We suspect there are far more cases of human tails in developing world which are hidden because of lack of knowledge, illiteracy, social

Perceived social support, coping, and stigma on the quality of life of people living with HIV in Nepal: a moderated mediation analysis.

Perceived social support, coping strategy, and internalized stigma have been linked with the quality of life (QOL) among people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, little is known about how these psychosocial factors interact with each other and affect QOL. This study incorporated a moderated mediation model to investigate whether coping strategy mediates the relationship between perceived social support and QOL, and to examine whether this mediating effect varies with the level of internalized stigma among PLHIV. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 599 PLHIV in Nepal. The multidimension

Social stigma and mental health among rural-to-urban migrants in China: A conceptual framework and future research needs.

There are over 100 million individuals in China who have migrated from rural villages to urban areas for jobs or better lives without permanent urban residency (i.e., "rural-to-urban migrants"). Our preliminary data from ongoing research among rural-to-urban migrants in China suggest that the migrant population is strongly stigmatized. Moreover, it appears that substantial numbers of these migrants experience mental health symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, hostility, social isolation). While the population potentially affected is substantial (more than 9% of the entire population or about o

Navigating motherhood with one breast: a descriptive phenomenological study of body image, social stigma and resilience during active chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer and unilateral mastectomy lead to profound emotional and social changes that influence how women view their bodies, relationships and sense of motherhood. With subsequent chemotherapy, these experiences often become more complex, shaping perceptions of femininity and self-worth. This study aimed to explore, in depth, the experiences of mothers who underwent chemotherapy with one breast (i.e. following unilateral mastectomy), emphasizing body image, social stigma and coping. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological approach was adopted. The study was carried out betwee

Family relationships, perceived stigma, and social isolation among people living with HIV/AIDS: a cross-sectional study in China.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is a critical determinant of health that disproportionately affects people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Although existing literature has identified associations of family relationships and perceived stigma with social isolation, the ways in which these factors are statistically related remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to assess the level of social isolation among PLWHA in China and to examine whether perceived stigma is statistically associated with the relationship between family relationships and social isolation. METHODS: A cross-sectional study

Optimizing Culturally Grounded Mental Illness Recovery Narratives for Anti-Stigma Messaging on Social Media: A Three-Wave Longitudinal Study.

Understanding how the effectiveness of mental health anti-stigma campaigns change over time is essential for designing sustainable and equitable interventions. Yet little is known about how these campaigns produce long-term impacts within interactive social media environments. This study conducted a three-wave longitudinal experiment to examine the effectiveness of social media-based mental illness recovery messages in reducing stigma and promoting professional help-seeking among African American, Hispanic, and Asian American adults (N = 577). Grounded in narrative persuasion, stigma, and soci

Suicidal thoughts and behaviour among South African adolescents living with HIV: Can social support buffer the impact of stigma?

BACKGROUND: Adolescents living with HIV represent a high-risk population for suicidal ideation and attempts, especially in low-income settings. Yet little is known about risk and protective factors for suicide in this population. METHODS: A moderated mediation model was employed to test for potential (a) effects of stigma on suicidal ideation and attempts, both direct and mediated through depression and (b) direct and stress-buffering effects of social support resources on depression and suicidal ideation and attempts, among 1053 HIV-positive 10-19-year-old adolescents from a resource-scarce

Predicting NSSI among Chinese transgender and gender diverse people: the role of social connectedness, internalized stigma, and self-esteem.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. However, the mechanisms underlying the influence of psychosocial factors on NSSI remain unclear. This study aims to explore the relationship between social connectedness, internalized stigma, self-esteem, and NSSI in TGD population. METHODS: The study was conducted from September 2024 to April 2025 among 770 TGD individuals in China (Mage = 25.55). First, we developed and validated an internalized stigma scale for TGD individuals (ISS-TGD) in the Chinese context. Second, a c

Health-Related Stigma, Social Support, Self-Efficacy, and Self-Care Actions Among Adults With Sickle Cell Disease in Oman.

Stigma contributes to the burden of individuals and families affected by Sickle cell disease (SCD) and causes delay in appropriate care seeking. The aim of this study is to examine the levels and associations between stigma, social support, self-efficacy, and self-care actions among adult patients with SCD in Oman using a cross-sectional, correlational design. Of the 264 participants, 56.1% (n = 148) were males, with mean age of 30.1 years (SD 7.7). Half of the participants were married, and 88.3% had no other associated diseases. The results demonstrate that patients in Oman suffer from healt

Intersecting stigma, social exclusion and coping mechanisms among women living with obstetric fistula in rural northern Ghana: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric fistula is a preventable childbirth injury that remains socially devastating for women in low-resource settings. Existing evidence on obstetric fistula stigma is largely derived from treatment centres and urban settings, leaving limited understanding of the lived experiences of women in underserved rural communities. This study addresses this knowledge gap by qualitatively examining stigma, coping strategies, and support needs among obstetric fistula survivors in Kpandai District, northern Ghana. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory descriptive design was used. Fourteen wo
