Professional socialization as a complex adaptive process: a systematic scoping review and integrative theory of professional identity formation.

BACKGROUND: Professional socialization is central to professional identity formation (PIF), shaping how physicians think, act, and feel within their roles. Despite sustained scholarly attention and curricular innovation, there remains limited understanding of how professional socialization actually operates, or why individuals exposed to similar training environments develop markedly different professional identities. METHODS: To examine this, we conducted a systematic scoping review using an AI-supplemented modified Systematic Evidence-Based Approach (mSEBA) to examine current theories of pr

Development of a multidimensional disease burden assessment system for childhood neuroblastoma based on the social determinants of health theory.

OBJECTIVE: To construct a multidimensional disease burden assessment system for children with neuroblastoma based on the Social Determinants of Health (SDH) theory, and to provide a reference for targeted assistance for rare diseases and for the optimization of health resource allocation. METHODS: An indicator pool was initially developed based on the SDH framework through a structured literature review and a structured expert panel discussion. From November to December 2025, 20 of the 21 invited experts participated in two rounds of Delphi consultation to finalize the indicators, and the Ana

[Social Cognition and Theory of Mind as a Differential Marker Between Alzheimer's Disease and Behavioral Variant Frontotemporal Dementia].

UNLABELLED: While language, memory, and executive function have been proposed as differential markers between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), recent studies emphasize the role of Social Cognition (SC) and Theory of Mind (ToM) in distinguishing between these conditions. AIM: To characterize SC and ToM performance in patients with AD and bvFTD. METHODOLOGY: This review followed PRISMA guidelines and included studies published between January 2015 and March 2024 from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were critically a

The Impact of Pedagogical Agents on Second Language Acquisition Outcomes: A Meta-Analysis Guided by Social Agency Theory.

Digital Pedagogical Agents (DPAs) are virtual teaching entities created in the digital learning environment that have characteristics such as emotion and socialization. According to the basis of Social Agency Theory (SAT), a three-level random-effects meta-analytic model is employed in this paper to study the general effect and boundary conditions of DPAs in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) environments systematically. Through searches across seven Chinese and English databases, 31 independent empirical studies were identified, yielding 112 effect sizes (2002-2026). Based on the three-level r

Development of the Basel Version of the Awareness of Social Inference Test - Theory of Mind (BASIT-ToM) in healthy adults.

Impairments of Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities occur in a wide range of brain disorders. Therefore, reliable and ecologically valid examination of these abilities is a crucial part of any comprehensive neuropsychological assessment. An established and ecologically valid, English-language test identifying deficits in ToM abilities is "The Awareness of Social Inference Test - Social Inference Minimal (TASIT-SIM)". However, no comparable German-language ToM test currently exists. In this study, we aimed to develop the first German-language adaption of TASIT-SIM in healthy adults. We selected 13 sc

Social-cognitive mechanisms in the cycle of violence: Cognitive and affective theory of mind, and externalizing psychopathology in children and adolescents.

Children who are victims of interpersonal violence have a markedly elevated risk of engaging in aggressive behavior and perpetrating violence in adolescence and adulthood. Although alterations in social information processing have long been understood as a core mechanism underlying the link between violence exposure and externalizing behavior, scant research has examined more basic social cognition abilities that might underlie this association. To that end, this study examined the associations of interpersonal violence exposure with cognitive and affective theory of mind (ToM), core social-co

Development of a brief version of the Social Phobia Inventory using item response theory: the Mini-SPIN-R.

The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) is a widely used measure in mental health settings and a 3-item version (mini-SPIN) has been developed as a screening instrument for social anxiety disorder. In the present study, we examined the psychometric properties of the SPIN and developed a brief version (mini-SPIN-R) designed to assess social anxiety severity using item response theory. Our sample included 569 individuals with social anxiety disorder who participated in 2 clinical trials and filled out a battery of self-report measures. Using a nonparametric kernel smoothing method we identified the m

[Close relationships in childhood and adulthood from the viewpoint of structural analysis of social behavior (SASB) and attachment theory].

Two theoretical approaches to interpersonal experiences and behavior are empirically related to each other: Structural Analysis of Social Behavior (SASB) and attachment theory. The focus is on the most important relationships during life-span: relationships with mother and father in childhood, which were measured retrospectively, and romantic relationships in adulthood. 93 outpatients of a psychosomatic clinic took part in the study. Self-report measures were used to assess SASB-dimensions affiliation and autonomy and attachment variables (Intrex short form, Short measure of attachment to pare

Children's health and the social theory of risk: insights from the British measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) controversy.

Recent debates in the United Kingdom about the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and its alleged link with autism have centred on contested notions of risk. This paper presents findings from 87 parents' focus group and interview discussions of their decision-making about the vaccine in light of three streams of theoretical literature on risk (cultural theory, risk society, psychometric models of risk perception) and models of vaccination acceptance and resistance. In addition to the risks of infectious disease and autism, parents balanced other risk concerns-both biological and social-i

Social spatial structure and psychological mechanisms of seat-occupying behavior in university libraries-based on grounded theory analysis.

Occupying seats in university libraries is a situated practice shaped by the interaction of resource availability, environmental-psychological needs, institutional rules, and student responses under academic pressure. To reveal the underlying social logic of its emergence, grounded theory was employed to conduct coding analysis on 496 analyzable units derived from heterogeneous documentary, public-discourse, visual, and observational sources, and a multidimensional theoretical model of the social spatial structure of seat occupancy in university libraries was constructed. The analysis suggests

Leading through crisis: care home managers' COVID-19 experiences examined through systems-led setbacks and social positioning theory.

INTRODUCTION: Care homes in England experienced disproportionate harm during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet existing policy analyses offer limited explanation of the structural and positional vulnerabilities faced by care home managers. This conceptual paper applies systems-led setbacks and social positioning theory to examine how pandemic policies shaped care home management across macro, meso and micro contexts. METHODS: Qualitative research evidence relating to care home management during the pandemic was examined using a multi-level thematic analysis. Evidence was organised across six policy

Narcissism at the crossroads: phenotypic description of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis.

This review documents two themes of emphasis found in phenotypic descriptions of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis. Clinical theories of narcissism spanning 35 years consistently describe variations in the expression of pathological narcissism that emphasize either grandiosity or vulnerable affects and self-states. Recent research in social/personality psychology examining the structure of narcissistic personality traits consistently finds two broad factors representing Grandiosity-Exhibitionism and Vulnerability-Sensitivit

Social identity coupling model in university students in high-level sports teams: based on grounded theory and fsQCA.

BACKGROUND: University students from high-level sports teams in China assume dual roles as formal students and elite athletes. This study develops a localized social identity coupling model to address the theoretical and empirical gaps in the existing literature. METHOD: Based on social identity theory, this study employs a mixed-method research paradigm integrating grounded theory and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The sample comprises 36 university students from high-level sports teams in China recruited from six universities. Semi-structured interviews and three-stage

Psychometric Properties of the Treatment Adherence Questionnaire in Hemodialysis Patients: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Social Cognitive Theory.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Effective management of hemodialysis patients is often hindered by low treatment adherence, underscoring the need for valid, theory-driven assessment tools. This study had two aims: (1) to develop a questionnaire based on Social Cognitive Theory for assessing treatment adherence behaviors among hemodialysis patients and (2) to evaluate its validity and reliability. METHODS: This methodological study employed a cross-sectional design. An initial pool of 57 items was generated through an extensive literature review and expert consultation, followed by cultural adaptation an

Connecting Through Emotions: A Social Constructivist Grounded Theory on How Palliative Care Clinicians Use Their Emotions During Consultations.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care clinicians are regularly exposed to emotionally laden situations. While emotions are an intrinsic part of their encounters with patients and relatives, the role of clinicians' own emotions has remained understudied. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore how palliative care clinicians use their emotions during end-of-life care consultations. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using individual interviews with palliative care clinicians from different backgrounds and countries. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two palliative care clinicians from 10 different countries participat

Factors influencing digital health literacy in stroke patients based on social cognitive theory: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health literacy is crucial for stroke patients to effectively access and utilize digital health information and services, thereby facilitating health management and improving health outcomes. However, digital health literacy among stroke patients is often inadequate and influenced by multiple factors. This study aimed to systematically identify the factors associated with digital health literacy in stroke patients, so as to provide evidence for the development of tailored intervention strategies. METHODS: Eight databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, S

Help-Seeking Intentions Among High-Risk College Student Drinkers: A Theory-Driven Examination of Social and Cognitive Influences.

Alcohol use remains a prevalent issue on college campuses, with approximately 15% of students drinking at levels indicative of an Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), yet help-seeking rates remain low. The Reasoned Action Approach (RAA) provides a framework for understanding psychosocial drivers of help-seeking intentions. This study assessed associations between college students' drinking behaviors, the RAA, and their intentions to seek professional help for alcohol use if they thought or knew they had an AUD. Cross-sectional survey data from 2,110 college students were analyzed to examine alcohol use
