BACKGROUND: Worldwide, at least 230 million girls and women are affected by female genital mutilation/ cutting (FGM/C). FGM/C violates human rights and can cause irreparable harm and even lead to death. In 2022, more than 100,000 survivors of FGM/C lived in Germany, and more than 17,000 girls were considered at risk. Due to the increasing number, there is a need to improve the skills of professionals not only to treat FGM/C but also to prevent it, aiming to maintain or improve women's physical and mental health. However, previous studies mostly focused on health care providers, even though oth

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread rapidly in China and other overseas areas, which has aroused widespread concern. The sharp increase in the number of patients has led to great psychological pressure on health care workers. The purpose of this study was to understand their mental health status and needs, so as to provide a scientific basis for alleviating the psychological pressure of health care workers.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study design, 540 health care workers were randomly selected from two designated tuberculosis medical institutions in Anhui Province

Certain populations of people living with HIV (PLWH) are at greater risk for falling out of care, including PLWH with a history of incarceration. This is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. In the current retrospective cohort study, we examined patient-level information for 340 PLWH who had transferred HIV care services from prison or from other community-based or private HIV primary care providers to a large urban HIV clinic in the southeastern United States. Results indicated that, compared to those transferring care from another community-based or private medical prov

This study sought to explore anecdotal reports that social workers in South Africa are often advised to postpone therapy with child complainants of sexual abuse until after the child's testimony, based on concerns of legal professionals that therapeutic interventions could influence the child's testimony. Applying purposive sampling and a qualitative research study, individual and focus group interviews were conducted with 18 social workers and one psychologist that provide therapeutic services to child complainants of sexual abuse in the Gauteng province. Interviews were audio-recorded, trans

In light of the emphasis on enforcement-based approaches towards sex work, and the well-known negative impacts of these approaches on women's health, safety and well-being, we conducted a study to investigate the prevalence and correlates of recent incarceration among a cohort of women sex workers in Vancouver, Canada. Data were obtained from an open prospective community cohort of female and transgender women sex workers, known as An Evaluation of Sex Workers' Health Access (AESHA). Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses, using generalized estimating equations (GEE), were us

Bar and hotel workers (n=519) in Moshi, Tanzania were interviewed to obtain information about potential predictors of condom use. Samples were collected for the diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV. Consistent condom use was defined as always using condoms with sexual partners in the past five years. Overall consistent condom use in this population was 14.1%. In multivariate analyses, consistent condom use was inversely associated with low condom self-efficacy (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 0.20; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.06-0.71), low condom knowledge (AOR, 0.11

The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model suggests that job demands and resources influence employees' turnover intention (TI), yet less is known about how these effects unfold over time. Drawing on the competing perspectives of accumulation and adaptation, this study examines whether TI among social workers is shaped by the cumulative effects of past role conflict (RC) or by responses to changing work conditions. Using matched panel data from the 2019 and 2022 waves of the China Social Work Longitudinal Study (CSWLS), the study investigates both lagged and change effects of RC and workplace supp

This qualitative study examines older adults' alcohol and other drug addiction and service effectiveness from the perspectives of 30 social workers grounded in intersectionality. Findings indicate that while loneliness and social environment contribute to addiction, common outcomes include bio-psycho-social, economic, and familial impacts. Intersectional factors, including gender, class, education, marital status, parenthood, social capital, and criminal involvement, differentiate these experiences. Women experience greater stigma and reduced access to services, while class and education influ

South Asian communities in the United States are diverse, with distinct cultural values and family norms. Social workers often face challenges engaging South Asian clients due to limited cultural understanding, especially around mental health, domestic violence, gender roles, and immigration issues. Based on experience in a South Asian domestic violence agency, this article examines key cultural factors influencing clients' experiences. It identifies barriers to service access and offers practical strategies to enhance cultural competence, addressing stigma, engaging family systems, and buildi

BACKGROUND: Medical social workers' (MedSWs) roles and responsibilities expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. They experienced larger caseloads, restrictive protocols, new policies, and work outside of their professional scope, despite limited access to resources, support, or hazard compensation. As a result, MedSWs faced complex ethical situations, which they had to address in accordance with the profession's guiding principles.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 54 MedSWs about their professional experiences during the pandemic and used the National Associati

As populations age globally, ensuring equitable healthcare access and social support for older adults in underserved urban areas has become increasingly critical. Elderly residents in low-income districts face challenges, including poor living conditions, social isolation, and healthcare access barriers. Community health workers (CHWs) are vital in bridging these gaps, yet their effectiveness is often Limited by resources and training. This qualitative study explores the healthcare and social needs of elderly residents receiving community services, identifies gaps in support systems, and exami

BACKGROUND: Online child sexual abuse (OCSA) is a growing social concern. However, its manifestations among children with disabilities (CWDs), who face an increased risk of sexual abuse, remain largely unexamined.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to fill this gap by examining professionals' perspectives of the OCSA of CWDs through their work at the 105 Hotline, an Israeli national call center that accepts queries and reports of the cyber victimization of minors.
METHODS: A mixed methods research design was employed. A quantitative analysis was performed on 114 case files involving the OCSA of CWDs

We identified predictors of social workers' intentions to integrate HIV and mental health care following Information, Motivation, Behavior Change (IMB) model trainings. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to understand applicability of the IMB model in promoting practice change. Significantly greater intentions to integrate care were found among participants who perceived an increase in knowledge (twofold) or who felt more comfortable (nearly fourfold) or capable (nearly fivefold) working with HIV-infected clients. Training that enhances knowledge and motivation enhanced social worke

The aim of this qualitative study is to examine the experiences of social workers in pediatric palliative care. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight social workers in pediatric palliative care clinics. Data were analyzed using content analysis, producing five themes. Findings show that social workers assume multifaceted roles. Social workers develop strategies to cope with the intense emotional labor involved. Despite being essential multidisciplinary team members, limited recognition and resources restrict their effectiveness. Social workers emphasized the need for specialized knowle
