Soft tissue sarcoma: the predominant primary malignancy in the retroperitoneum.

Purpose. In the clinical work-up of a retroperitoneal mass, the diagnosis of soft tissue sarcoma is often not considered. Incidence rates of various malignant and benign retroperitoneal tumours were studied to determine the incidence of soft tissue sarcoma in comparison with other neoplasms in the retroperitoneal space.Method. Nation-wide data on retroperitoneal tumours, collected prospectively over a 5-year period (1 January 1989- 1 January 1994), were supplied by the Netherlands Cancer Registry and The Dutch Network and National Database for Pathology.Results. Seven hundred and six patients

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma presenting as a soft-tissue mass of the extremity.

An 87-year-old man was found to have a lymphoma in the deep soft tissue of the right shoulder with concomitant central nervous system involvement. There was no evidence of cutaneous, peripheral lymph node, mediastinal, abdominal, or bone marrow involvement. Light microscopic, ultrastructural, and immunohistochemical evaluation characterized the neoplasm as a peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Lymphomas presenting in soft tissue are rare, and the few well-documented cases in the literature are of B-cell origin. We report a T-cell lymphoma presenting in the soft tissue of the extremity, and delineate i

Genetic variant of SRF-rearranged myofibroma with a misleading nuclear expression of STAT6 and STAT6 involvement as 3' fusion partner.

Pediatric neoplasms with a myofibroblastic differentiation are frequent in children, in particular myofibroma. Recently, a novel deep soft tissue myofibroblastic neoplasm has been described with high cellularity, a smooth muscle phenotype and SRF-RELA fusion. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a tumor of the deep soft tissue of the arm, with overlapping histological features with the recently described SRF-RELA group of myofibromas but differing by the presence of calcifications, a novel SRF-STAT6 fusion transcript and nuclear expression of STAT6. No local recurrence no

Huge Intra-abdominal Retroperitoneal Spindle Cell Mass in a Young Adult: A Report of a Rare Case and Literature Review.

GI stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms in the GI tract. GISTs are malignancies that typically originate in the digestive system, most often in the stomach and small intestine. Histopathological classification identifies three types of GISTs: spindle cell, epithelioid, and mixed. We present a case of a huge intra-abdominal retroperitoneal mass in a 23-year-old female with no notable medical or surgical history. She experienced dysphagia and early satiety for one year but did not seek medical attention until presenting at our clinic. Her abdomen was distended, soft,

Initial Misidentification of Thumb Poroma by Shave Biopsy.

Poromas are benign adnexal neoplasms originating from the intraepidermal portion of sweat gland ducts. With the possibility of malignant transformation, accurate clinical diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Numerous reports of hand poroma lesions have been reported. We present an unusual case of a distal thumb poroma originally identified as a squamous cell lesion in a shave biopsy and eventually accurately identified after excisional biopsy. This report highlights the limitations of shave biopsy associated with soft tissue hand lesions and the need to consider poroma when evaluating a soft t

Soft tissue angiosarcoma of the breast in a patient with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome.

Angiosarcomas are neoplasms of blood or lymphatic vessels with aggressive behavior. We report the coexistence of this malignancy within soft tissue of the breast in a 49-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTW-S) during childhood. The patient has no previous history of radiation therapy on the chest and does not have any known risk factor for developing angiosarcoma, except for her congenital disease. To the best of our knowledge, the association between soft tissue angiosarcoma of the breast and KTW-S has never been previously reported.

[Ganglioneuroma of the zygoma].

INTRODUCTION: Ganglioneuroma is an uncommon benign tumor that arises from the sympathetic nervous system accounting for less than 1% of all soft-tissue neoplasms. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 22 year-old man who presented a ganglioneuroma localized in the zygoma. DISCUSSION: Ganglioneuroma generally develop in the abdomen or thorax soft tissue. The occurrence of ganglioneuroma in the bone is exceptional. To date less than ten cases have been reported, six of which involved the mandible. We discuss the possible causes of tumor development at this site.

MRI of common penile pathologies and penile prostheses.

MRI can delineate finer details of penile anatomy and pathology due to inherent higher soft-tissue contrast and spatial resolution. It can characterize inflammation and identify abscesses, localize penile fractures, guide surgical planning in penile fibrosis and Peyronie's disease, and depict components of the penile prosthesis and its complications. MRI is a great investigative tool for penile neoplasms, including locally infiltrative neoplasms where clinical examination is limited, and local staging is crucial for surgical planning.

Extraosseous osteosarcoma of the esophagus: a case report.

Extraosseous osteosarcoma (EOO) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that is located in the soft tissues without direct attachment to the skeletal system and that produces osteoid, bone, or chondroid material. EOO is an extremely rare disease, accounting for only 1% of soft tissue sarcomas, and typically presents in either an extremity or the retroperitoneum. This paper presents the case of a 45-year-old Caucasian male with extraosseous osteosarcoma of the esophagus.

A Unique Cause of Upper Airway Obstruction in a Child: Laryngeal Lipoma.

There are lots of diseases causing pediatric upper airway obstruction and stridor. They can be both congenital or acquired. While congenital causes are laryngomalacia, vocal cord palsy, congenital subglottic stenosis, acquired ones range from infections to foreign bodies or neoplasms. Laryngeal neoplasms develop almost epithelial in origin. Non-epithelial tumors consist 1% of laryngeal neoplasms. Although lipoma is the most common soft tissue tumor, laryngeal involvement is very rare and seen in the ages between 40-60 years. A 13-month-old child who had laryngeal lipoma and upper airway obstru

Clinicopathological features of retroperitoneal tumours.

The clinicopathological features of 49 neoplasms in the retroperitoneum, but not arising directly from a major retroperitoneal organ, are described. Abdominal pain and a mass, urinary tract symptoms and evidence of pressure on venous channels or nerves were common modes of presentation. In 6 cases the neoplasms were found incidentally and in 4 patients removal of the retroperitoneal mass was an elective procedure during the treatment of metastatic testicular germ cell tumour. Histopathological diagnosis revealed 4 major tumour types: germ cell neoplasms, non-germ cell metastatic carcinoma, sof

Low-grade extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the mediastinum: report of a case and review of literature.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma, typically characterized by a bone-producing neoplasm. Low-grade extraskeletal osteosarcoma (LGESOS) is an extremely rare soft tissue tumor, and patients with LGESOS tend to have a better prognosis. Here, we reported a case of LGESOS of the mediastinum with lung metastasis, and describe its clinical, pathological and radiological features, and compared them with those of the reported cases.

Primary mediastinal synovial sarcomas.

Synovial sarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for approximately 10% of all soft tissue sarcomas. These tumors most commonly occur in the extremities of young adults but are not restricted to this site and can arise in virtually any organ system. Synovial sarcomas originating in the mediastinum are exceptionally rare and are often mistaken for other, more common neoplasms in this location, especially since there are no specific imaging characteristics or clinical manifestations. Contrary to synovial sarcomas of the extremities, mediastinal tumors more commonly affect male p

Adrenocortical oncocytic neoplasms: a case report.

Adrenocortical oncocytic neoplasms (ACONs) are very rare in adrenal cortical tumors. One case was reported in this paper. During the physical examination, a soft tissue density shadow was about 6 cm × 5.7 cm in the right adrenal gland. A preoperative diagnosis was adrenal pheochromocytoma with concurrent laparoscopic resection of the right adrenal tumor. Postoperative pathological results rewarded the adrenal cortical oncocytic neoplasms ACONs. After 11-months of postoperative follow-up, the patient had no signs of tumor recurrence and related complications.

Leiomyosarcoma of somatic soft tissues in childhood: an immunohistochemical analysis of six cases with ultrastructural correlation.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of soft tissue is a rare tumor in children. Although LMS may exhibit clinical and histologic features that are typical of smooth muscle neoplasms in adults, they may often be confused with or resemble tumors of presumed fibroblastic, myofibroblastic, or rhabdomyoblastic differentiation. As a result, the diagnosis of LMS in children is often difficult to establish with confidence. To address this problem, we analyzed the immunohistochemical features of six LMS in children (one of deep soft tissue of an extremity, one of paravertebral tissue, one of the retroperitoneum, two

Oral myoepithelioma of soft tissue origin: report of a new case and literature review.

Oral myoepithelioma of soft tissue origin, an entity distinct from myoepithelioma of salivary glands, constitutes an extremely rare benign neoplasm, with only 1 previously published case, affecting the tongue of a 22-year-old woman. Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) also is a very rare benign neoplasm of the oral cavity that has a strong predilection for the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The great similarities in the histologic and immunohistochemical characteristics of soft tissue myoepithelioma (STM) and ECT probably indicate that they refer to the same or closely related pathologi
