Effect of Ultrafine Cement (UFC) on the Corrosion Resistance of Cement Soil in Peat Soil Environment.

Many peat soils are distributed around plateau lakes, and the reinforcement of peat soils with high organic matter content by ordinary cement cannot meet the actual engineering requirements. In order to obtain better mechanical properties and durability of the reinforcement, this experiment prepared peat soil by mixing humic acid reagent into the alluvial clay soil with low organic matter content. The cement soil samples were prepared by adding cement and ultrafine cement (UFC) by stirring method; the samples were then soaked in fulvic acid solution to simulate the cement soil in the peat soil

A double-edged sword: Reductive soil disinfestation changes the fates of trace metal elements in soil.

Although the effects of reductive soil disinfestation (RSD) in soil sterilization have been proven in several countries, the potential risks of trace metal elements (TMEs) caused by RSD require further assessment. Here, freshly Cd-spiked soil and historically contaminated greenhouse soil were exposed to RSD and the fates of TMEs, Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, were investigated. All RSD treatments lasted for 21 days and subsamples were collected at different time intervals. Samples were open-air incubated for another 7 days until day 28 to simulate the situation after drainage. The bioavailabilit

Optimization of Soil Washing to Reduce the Selenium Levels of Seleniferous Soil from Punjab, Northwestern India.

Seleniferous soil collected from the wheat ( L.)-grown agricultural land in Punjab, India, was characterized and the Se concentration in various soil fractions was determined by sequential extraction. The soil had a total Se content of 4.75 (±0.02) mg kg, of which 44% was observed in the oxidizable soil fraction. Soil flushing as an in situ technique was performed to simulate the Se migration pattern in case of rainfall or irrigation. Significant migration of Se from the upper layer to the lower layers was observed during water percolation through the soil column at a flow rate of 1 mL min, wh

Long-term Fertilization Structures Bacterial and Archaeal Communities along Soil Depth Gradient in a Paddy Soil.

Soil microbes provide important ecosystem services. Though the effects of changes in nutrient availability due to fertilization on the soil microbial communities in the topsoil (tilled layer, 0-20 cm) have been extensively explored, the effects on communities and their associations with soil nutrients in the subsoil (below 20 cm) which is rarely impacted by tillage are still unclear. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was used to investigate bacterial and archaeal communities in a Pup-Calric-Entisol soil treated for 32 years with chemical fertilizer (CF) and CF combined with farmyard manure (CF

Ammonium citrate as enhancement for electrodialytic soil remediation and investigation of soil solution during the process.

Seven electrodialytic experiments were conducted using ammonium citrate as enhancing agent to remediate copper and chromium-contaminated soil from a wood-preservation site. The purpose was to investigate the effect of current density (0.2, 1.0 and 1.5 mA cm(-2)), concentration of enhancing agent (0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 M) and remediation times (21, 42 and 117 d) for the removal of Cu and Cr from a calcareous soil. To gain insight on metal behavior, soil solution was periodically collected using suction cups. It was seen that current densities higher than 1.0 mA cm(-2) did not increase removal and t

Effect of soil aggregate size on methanogenesis and archaeal community structure in anoxic rice field soil.

In anoxically incubated slurries of Italian rice field soil, CH(4) production is initiated after a lag phase during which ferric iron and sulfate are reduced. The production of CH(4) was affected by the size of soil aggregates used for the preparation of the soil slurry. Rates of CH(4) production were lowest with small aggregates (<50 and 50-100 µm), were highest with aggregates of 200-2000 µm size and were intermediate with aggregates of 2000-15000 µm size. The different amounts of CH(4) accumulated were positively correlated to the concentrations of acetate, propionate and caproate that tran

Modified biochar/humic substance/fertiliser compound soil conditioner for highly efficient improvement of soil fertility and heavy metals remediation in acidic soils.

Fertile and uncontaminated soil with appropriate pH is crucial in terms of the agricultural sustainable development. Herein, a compound soil conditioner containing chitosan modified straw biochar (CBC), kitchen waste compost product-derived humic substance (HS), NPK compound fertiliser (NPK-CF) was prepared to simultaneously adjust acidic soil pH, improve fertility, and immobilize heavy metal. The results exhibited that the best Pb and NH4+ adsorption performance was obtained in CBC with chitosan:biochar of 1:5. Then, the acid soil pH was improved from 5.03 to 6.66 in the presence of CBC/HS (5

Intrinsic soil properties and microbial controls on denitrification rates across contrasting agricultural soils.

Denitrification is a key microbial process in nitrogen cycling and a major source of N2O emissions from agricultural soils. In this study, we investigated denitrification rates and their intrinsic controls across four contrasting agricultural soils from China (black, yellow loessal, purple, and red soils) using anaerobic microcosm incubations with the acetylene inhibition method. Denitrification rate constants were derived from a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Microbial community composition and the abundance of denitrification functional genes (narG, napA, nirK, nirS, norB, and nosZ) were

Routine soil tests support screening of high aluminium saturation in acidic cacao soils.

High aluminium saturation is a frequent but unevenly monitored constraint in acidic tropical soils, where routine soil testing is often more accessible than complete exchangeable-acidity determinations. This study developed and internally validated a screening model for high or very high aluminium saturation in cacao soil samples from the central Peruvian Amazon. Of 1842 anonymized monitoring records, 1539 acidic samples (pH < 5.5) formed the analytical cohort; the outcome was laboratory-reported aluminium saturation ≥ 20%. Six logistic-regression models compared routine soil tests with gridde

Quantitative soil color dataset for prediction of labile and persistent organic carbon in Peruvian soils.

Soil organic carbon plays a key role in climate change mitigation and exists in both labile and persistent forms. Standard quantification of both pools involves the total or partial destruction of soil samples through chemical oxidation, resulting in significant waste production and processing requirements. Given the strong association between soil organic carbon and its soil color, optical sensors offer a non-destructive and efficient alternative for its quantification. This dataset provides the analysis of labile and persistent organic carbon fractions, along with soil color data, from 329 s

Biotic and Abiotic Contribution to Diurnal Soil CO2 Fluxes from Saline/Alkaline Soils.

As the second largest carbon flux in terrestrial ecosystems, the soil CO2 flux is closely related to the atmospheric CO2 concentration. The soil CO2 flux is the sum of biotic respiration and abiotic geochemical CO2 exchange; however, little is known about abiotic CO2 fluxes in arid areas. To investigate the relative contribution of abiotic and biotic soil CO2 fluxes over a diurnal course, the abiotic CO2 flux was distinguished by autoclaving sterilization in both saline and alkaline soils at an arid site in northwestern China. The results demonstrated that: (1) Over the diurnal course, the abi

Effects of the soil microbial community on mobile proportions and speciation of mercury (Hg) in contaminated soil.

The precise characterization of the behavior of individual microorganisms in the presence of increased mercury contents in soil is necessary for better elucidation of the fate of mercury in the soil environment. In our investigation, resistant bacterial strains isolated from two mercury contaminated soils, represented by Paenibacillus alginolyticus, Burkholderia glathei, Burkholderia sp., and Pseudomonas sp., were used. Two differently contaminated soils (0.5 and 7 mg kg(-1) total mercury) were chosen. Preliminary soil analysis showed the presence of methylmercury and phenylmercury with the hi

Biosolids-amended soils: Part I. Effect of biosolids application on soil quality and ecotoxicity.

Investigations of potential risk from biosolids generally indicate that land application does not threaten human or ecosystem health, but questions continue to arise concerning the environmental effects of this practice. This research project was initiated to evaluate ecotoxicity resulting from the amendment of soils with biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Toxicity was evaluated using standard tests, including earthworm mortality, growth, and reproduction; seedling germination and root elongation; microbial respiration; and nematode mortality and reproduction. Establishing principal soil quality parameters influencing earthworms in urban soils using bioassays.

Potential contamination at ex-industrial sites means that, prior to change of use, it will be necessary to quantify the extent of risks to potential receptors. To assess ecological hazards, it is often suggested to use biological assessment to augment chemical analyses. Here we investigate the potential of a commonly recommended bioassay, the earthworm reproduction test, to assess the status of urban contaminated soils. Sample points at all study sites had contaminant concentrations above the Dutch soil criteria Target Values. In some cases, the relevant Intervention Values were exceeded. Eart

Transfer of prosulfocarb and boscalid residues from maize leaves to soil and their effects on soil microorganisms.

Plant materials that have been in contact with pesticides can be incorporated into the soil, posing a potential risk to non-target soil organisms and, hence, soil functions. This study investigated effects of two pesticides applied to maize leaves on the soil microbial community, activity and function. The herbicide prosulfocarb (PSC) and the fungicide boscalid (BSC) were applied alone or in combination to fresh or aged maize leaves, which were incorporated into soil. During a 56-day incubation we quantified pesticide residues in soil and maize leaves as well as maize-derived C incorporation i

Ecological Risk Assessment of Three Pesticide Additives in Soil and Application to the Remediation of Contaminated Soil.

Pesticide additives (PAs) are auxiliary ingredients added to the pesticide manufacturing and use processes, constituting 1% to 99% of the pesticide and often composed of benzene and chlorinated hydrocarbons. We selected three typical PAs, toluene, chloroform, and trichloroethylene, to evaluate their retention function toxicity and ecological risk in soil. Soil immobilization techniques and aquatic model organisms were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the immobilized soil method to determine the ecological risk of chemicals. The 48-h median lethal concentrations of toluene, chloroform,

Impacts of sewage sludges deposition on agricultural soils: Effects upon model soil organisms.

During years sewage sludges have been worldwide poured in agricultural soils to enhance vegetal production. The "Landfill 17" located in Gernika-Lumo town (43°19'28.9"N 2°40'30.9"W) received for decades sewage sludges from the local Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) with agricultural purposes. To this WWTP, several pollutants as heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb), PAHs (benzo(a)pyrene among many others) and pesticides (i.e. dieldrin) could have arrived from local industry and be widespread all over the landfill. Soil invertebrates like earthworms and plants are of special interest due to their clo
