Subchronic effects of plant alkaloids on anxiety-like behavior in zebrafish.

Zebrafish provide a valuable emerging complementary model for neurobehavioral research. They offer a powerful way to screen for the potential therapeutic effects of neuroactive drugs. A variety of behavioral tests for zebrafish have been developed and validated for assessing neurobehavioral function. The novel tank diving test is a straightforward, reproducible way of measuring anxiety-like behavior in zebrafish. When introduced into a novel tank, zebrafish normally dive to the bottom of the tank and then gradually explore the higher levels of the water column as time progresses. Buspirone is

Genomic variation across distribution of Micro-Tom, a model cultivar of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum).

Micro-Tom is a cultivar of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), which is known as a major crop and model plant in Solanaceae. Micro-Tom has phenotypic traits such as dwarfism, and substantial EMS-mutagenized lines have been reported. After Micro-Tom was generated in Florida, USA, it was distributed to research institutes worldwide and used as a genetic resource. In Japan, the Micro-Tom lines have been genetically fixed; currently, three lines have been re-distributed from three institutes, but many phenotypes among the lines have been observed. We have determined the genome sequence de novo of the M

Systemic induction of a Capsicum chinense nitrate reductase by the infection with Phytophthora capsici and defence phytohormones.

The mRNA differential display technique was used to identify genes from Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) seedlings whose expression is modified systemically by infection with the oomycete Phytophthora capsici L. Experiments with different oligonucleotide primer combinations revealed that no single gene was synthesised de novo. Instead, the quantitative accumulation of multiple transcripts was found. From these transcripts, levels of a nitrate reductase (Capsicum chinense nitrate reductase, CcNR), which has a high percentage of identity with other Solanaceae NRs, showed a consistent in

Protective effect of Lycium chinense fruit on carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity.

In the present study, we investigated the protective effect of Lycium chinense Miller (Solanaceae) fruit (LFE) against CCl(4)-induced hepatotoxicity and the mechanism underlying these protective effects in rats. The pretreatment of LFE has shown to possess a significant protective effect by lowering the serum aspartate and alanine aminotransferase (AST and ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). This hepatoprotective action was confirmed by histological observation. In addition, pretreatment of LFE prevented the elevation of hepatic malondialdehyde (MDA) formation and the depletion of reduced glu

Nitric oxide induces stomatal closure and enhances the adaptive plant responses against drought stress.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a very active molecule involved in many and diverse biological pathways where it has proved to be protective against damages provoked by oxidative stress conditions. In this work, we studied the effect of two NO donors, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine SNP-treated on the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to water stress conditions. After 2 and 3 h of drought, detached wheat leaves pretreated with 150 microM SNP retained up to 15% more water than those pretreated with water or NO(2)(-)/NO(3)(-). The effect of SNP treatment on water retentio

Identification of bHLHs based on transcriptome and molecular mechanism of transcription factor CabHLH118 regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis in chili (Capsicum annuum L.)fruit.

The bHLH family is considered as the second largest class of transcription factors in plants, playing important roles in various biological processes, particularly in color regulation. Previous research indicated that bHLH family genes were significantly involved in screening for genes associated with color variation in chili fruits. Further analysis of the predicted bHLH family genes revealed a high correlation between CabHLH118 and delphinidin, and subsequent assays showed that CabHLH118 was localized in the nucleus, possessed transcriptional activation activity, but lacked self-activation a

Virtual screening of potato virus Y coat protein for discovering lead inhibitors of viral intercellular traffic.

Potato virus Y (PVY) is one of the most economically detrimental phytoviruses affecting global Solanaceae, possessing challenges in agrochemical control. The structural elucidation of PVY coat protein (CP) offers opportunities for the rational design of CP-targeted antivirals; however, the feasibility of identifying lead compounds via virtual screening remains largely unexplored. Herein, we report the successful case of structure-based virtual screening leveraging PVY CP, enabling the identification of a structurally novel lead with a unique mechanism of action. Combining quantitative analysis

BACKGROUND: Plant life is extremely diverse, with a great deal of geographic and seasonal variation. Consequently, the range of reported adverse reactions is large, and there are important differences worldwide in the incidence and prevalence of these reactions. Systemic ingestion of some plants containing furocoumarins can cause erythema, edema, vesicle and bulla formation and later hyperpigmentation, after exposure to sunlight. They may at times exhibit clinical manifestations that mimic angioedema, and rarely progress to necrosis. This condition is named phyto-phototoxic reaction. OBJECTIV
