Silverleaf Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) Undergoes Guild-Specific Transcriptomic Reprogramming Against Chewing Versus Piercing Sucking Herbivory.

Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade, SLN) is a globally invasive perennial weed with reproductive plasticity and complex defence systems that significantly impact crop yields by invading fields of staple, commercial and ornamental crops. Despite being a host to multiple insect herbivores, the molecular programming enabling its rapid adaptation to defend against diverse feeding guilds remains poorly resolved. Here, we report a comprehensive de novo transcriptomic assembly and comparative analysis of S. elaeagnifolium challenged by two distinct herbivores: the piercing-sucking generali

Rootstock selection and grafting systems affect pepino (Solanum muricatum) fruit nutritional quality and plant performance.

Pepino (Solanum muricatum) is a nutritionally valuable Solanaceae crop, but optimizing its grafting practices to improve survival, growth, and fruit quality remains a critical challenge for commercial production. In this study, we systematically evaluated four pepino scions grafted onto nine Solanaceae rootstocks-including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper (Capsicum annuum), and eggplant (Solanum melongena)-and optimized grafting parameters (cotyledon removal, grafting height, glucose pretreatment, and shading duration). We measured grafting survival, transplant success, vegetative growth,

Isolation, cloning and transgenic expression of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in Solanum lycopersicum L.

The Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the most widespread viral infections of humans. HBV causes acute and chronic hepatitis. Chronic hepatitis leads to hepatocellular carcinoma, which is a significant cause of death. DNA-based immunization programs to control the spread of Hepatitis B in developing countries are costly and require special storage and transportation. The alternative way is to express Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in plants to develop oral vaccines. In this study, HBsAg gene was isolated, cloned, and then transformed in tomato plants. The transgenic tomato plant

A new alkaloid and flavonoids isolated from Solanum cernuum leaves by high-performance countercurrent chromatography.

Solanum cernuum is a medicinal plant widely distributed in south-east regions of Brazil and popularly used to treat several disorders. Despite their utilisation as a medicine, few studies on its chemical composition are reported. An efficient separation method for the ethyl acetate fraction was developed by high-performance countercurrent chromatography using n-butanol/chloroform/methanol/water (3:7:3:4, v/v/v/v) as the solvent system, affording five compounds (1-5) in one-step separation. A new cyclic guanidine alkaloid named cernidine (5) was obtained, besides four glycosylated flavonoids: a

Compound amino acids added in media improved Solanum nigrum L. phytoremediating CD-PAHS contaminated soil.

Cd hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. was a promising plant used to simultaneously remediate Cd-PAHs combined pollution soil through its extra accumulation capacity and rhizosphere degradation. This article compared the strengthening remediation role of cysteine (Cys), glycine (Gly) and glutamic acid (Glu) with EDTA and TW80. The results showed that the addition of 0.03 mmol L(-1) Cys, Gly, and Glu didn't significantly impact (p < 0.05) shoot biomass of S. nigrum, but obviously increased Cd concentration. Therefore, Cd capacity (µg pot(-1)) in shoots of S. nigrum was significantly increased (p

SmYABBY1, a Light-Inducible Transcription Factor, Positively Regulates Anthocyanin Biosynthesis in Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.).

Anthocyanin biosynthesis in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is highly light-dependent, and insufficient light severely impairs fruit coloration, which restricts the development of the eggplant industry. SmMYB75 is a key positive regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis, but its regulatory partners remain unclear. In this study, seven SmYABBY genes were identified from the eggplant genome, all containing conserved zinc finger and YABBY domains. Expression analysis showed that SmYABBY1 was predominantly expressed in fruit peel and significantly induced by light, with a peak at 4 h after light expos

Fluorescence Detection of Pyrene-Stained Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MHR24 in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) Stem Tissues.

The PGPR strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens MHR24 (MHR24) was recently reported as a strong biocontrol strain. In this study, MHR24 was used to investigate phyllosphere effects during inoculations of tomato leaves (Solanum lycopersicum L.). When MHR24 was inoculated on foliar tissue, it caused apical chlorosis symptoms at 3-6 days after infiltration or submersion, which suggests that the bacterium may adopt a potentially pathogenic lifestyle in the phyllosphere. In order to detect the MHR24 interaction with the plant, it was stained with the commercial fluorophore 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisu

StICE1 activates StCBFs expression to regulate cold stress response in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) seedlings.

Cold stress is a major environmental factor limiting potato yield. Understanding the molecular regulatory networks that govern plant responses to low temperature is therefore crucial for enhancing crop stress tolerance through genetic approaches. In this study, we investigated the functional role and molecular mechanisms of the StICE1 gene in potato under chilling stress, aiming to provide a theoretical basis for the molecular breeding of cold-tolerant varieties. We generated both overexpression (OE) and RNA interference (RNAi) transgenic lines. Cold tolerance among these genotypes was compreh

Silicon enhances salinity tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) through physiological, biochemical, and ionic regulation.

BACKGROUND: Soil salinization poses a significant threat to agricultural production, necessitating innovative agronomic strategies to mitigate its impact. Salinity stress is a critical abiotic factor that hampers tomato growth by causing ionic imbalances, oxidative damage, and disruptions in physiological systems. This study investigated the effect of sodium silicate (Na₂SiO₃) in reducing salt stress in tomato plants exposed to 75 and 150 mM NaCl. RESULTS: The results indicated that salinity substantially decreased plant growth, the content of photosynthetic pigments, and the uptake of essent

Proteomics fingerprinting reveals importance of iron and oxidative stress in Streptomyces scabies-Solanum tuberosum interactions.

INTRODUCTION: The Gram-positive actinobacterium Streptomyces scabies is the major causal agent of potato common scab. The main pathogenicity factor is thaxtomin A, a phytotoxin that causes atypical cell death, although other secondary metabolites have been described to play a role in S. scabies virulence. Despite this, many aspects of the interaction between S. scabies and its primary host Solanum tuberosum L. remain to be elucidated. METHODS: Intracellular proteins of S. scabies EF-35 grown in the presence of in vitro produced tubers (microtubers) of the Russet Burbank and Yukon Gold potato

Solanum nigrum Linne improves DNCB‑induced atopic dermatitis‑like skin disease in BALB/c mice.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of Solanum nigrum Linne (SNL) in a model of 1‑chloro‑2,4‑dinitrobenzene (DNCB)‑induced atopic dermatitis (AD) and in TNF‑α/IFN‑γ‑stimulated HaCaT cells. AD is a chronic inflammatory skin disease and is characterized by erythema, edema, increased pruritus and eczema. Steroids are most commonly used for anti‑inflammatory therapy; however, their long‑term use is limited due to side‑effects, such as osteoporosis, brittle skin, muscle weaknesses and diabetes. Therefore, patients with AD require alternative treatment strategies. In previous studies,
