Cochlear Implantation in Single-Sided Deafness and Asymmetric Hearing Loss: 12 Months Follow-up Results of a European Multicenter Evaluation.

People with single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL) have particular difficulty understanding speech in noisy listening situations and in sound localization. The objective of this multicenter study is to evaluate the effect of a cochlear implant (CI) in adults with single-sided deafness (SSD) or asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), particularly regarding sound localization and speech intelligibility with additional interest in electric-acoustic pitch matching. A prospective longitudinal study at 7 European tertiary referral centers was conducted including 19 SSD and 16 AHL subjec

Auditory Spatial Deficits in the Early Stage of Ischemic Cerebral Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research, together with computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging findings, proves that ischemic stroke (IS) that damages auditory pathways can cause hearing loss and impairment of higher auditory processes such as sound localization. The goal of the study was to find possible correlations between the IS risk factors, ischemic lesion volume and localization, neurologic status, and the sound localization capability in acute IS patients. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 61 IS patients into the study. The control group consisted of 60 healthy volunteers. All neuro-oto

Feasibility of Virtual Reality-Based Auditory Localization Training With Binaurally Recorded Auditory Stimuli for Patients With Single-Sided Deafness.

OBJECTIVES: To train participants to localize sound using virtual reality (VR) technology, appropriate auditory stimuli that contain accurate spatial cues are essential. The generic head-related transfer function that grounds the programmed spatial audio in VR does not reflect individual variation in monaural spatial cues, which is critical for auditory spatial perception in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD). As binaural difference cues are unavailable, auditory spatial perception is a typical problem in the SSD population and warrants intervention. This study assessed the applicabilit

Dual Sensory Impairment: Impact of Central Vision Loss and Hearing Loss on Visual and Auditory Localization.

PURPOSE: In the United States, AMD is a leading cause of low vision that leads to central vision loss and has a high co-occurrence with hearing loss. The impact of central vision loss on the daily functioning of older individuals cannot be fully addressed without considering their hearing status. We investigated the impact of combined central vision loss and hearing loss on spatial localization, an ability critical for social interactions and navigation. METHODS: Sixteen older adults with central vision loss primarily due to AMD, with or without co-occurring hearing loss, completed a spatial

Prospective study of sound localisation in patients with single sided deafness and asymmetric hearing loss treated with cochlear implant.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Sound localization plays a crucial role in our daily lives, enabling us to recognize voices, respond to alarming situations, avoid dangers, and navigate towards specific signals. However, this ability is compromised in patients with Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) and Asymmetric Hearing Loss (AHL), negatively impacting their daily functioning. The main objective of the study was to quantify the degree of sound source localization in patients with single-sided deafness or asymmetric hearing loss using a Cochlear Implant (CI) and to compare between the two subgroups. The Upside-down Approach With a Lazy-S Incision for Osia Implantation: How I Do It.

BACKGROUND: Improved surgical techniques for OSIA-bone conduction implant placement are needed to enhance comfort, sound localization, and cosmetic outcomes, especially for patients transitioning from Bone-Anchored Hearing Systems (BAHA). METHODS: A case study at a tertiary center used a novel "upside-down" OSIA 300 implantation with a "lazy-S" incision. The actuator and coil were repositioned closer to the ear canal to improve performance, while the incision reduced skin tension and enhanced cosmesis. Outcomes assessed included surgical complications, patient comfort, and sound localization.

Improved directional hearing of children with congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss implanted with an active bone-conduction implant or an active middle ear implant.

Different amplification options are available for listeners with congenital unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL). For example, bone-conduction devices (BCDs) and middle ear implants. The present study investigated whether intervention with an active BCD, the Bonebridge, or a middle ear implant, the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB), affected sound-localization performance of listeners with congenital UCHL. Listening with a Bonebridge or VSB might provide access to binaural cues. However, when fitted with the Bonebridge, but not with a VSB, binaural processing might be affected through cross stimu

[Ultra sonography for the localization of intra-uterine contraceptive devices (i.u.d.'s) (author's transl)].

The localization of uterine devices by ultra-sound techniques was investigated. Seven different types of intra-uterine contraceptive devices were checked under immersion in water and in the uterus of 585 wearers of I.U.D.'s. The quality of the ultra-sound pictures is mostly determined by the type of intra-uterine device. Under optimal conditions the investigated types of I.U.D.'s produced standard ultra-sound pictures which permitted their identification. The evaluation of the localization of the intra-uterine contraceptive devices in the uterus was reasonably accurate. At first the classifica

A pilot study on spatial hearing in children with congenital unilateral aural atresia.

Despite normal hearing in one ear, individuals with congenital unilateral aural atresia may perceive difficulties in everyday listening conditions typically containing multiple sound sources. While previous work shows that intervention with bone conduction devices may aid spatial hearing for some children, testing conditions are often arranged to maximize any benefit and are not very similar to daily life. The benefit from amplification on spatial tasks has been found to vary between individuals, for reasons not entirely clear. This study has sought to expand on the limited knowledge on how ch

Auditory cortical plasticity after cochlear implantation in asymmetric hearing loss is related to spatial hearing: a PET H215O study.

In asymmetric hearing loss (AHL), the normal pattern of contralateral hemispheric dominance for monaural stimulation is modified, with a shift towards the hemisphere ipsilateral to the better ear. The extent of this shift has been shown to relate to sound localization deficits. In this study, we examined whether cochlear implantation to treat postlingual AHL can restore the normal functional pattern of auditory cortical activity and whether this relates to improved sound localization. The auditory cortical activity was found to be lower in the AHL cochlear implanted (AHL-CI) participants. A co

Axonal Conduction Delay Shapes the Precision of the Spatial Hearing in A Spiking Neural Network Model of Auditory Brainstem.

One method by which the mammalian sound localization pathway localizes sound sources is by analyzing the microsecond-level difference between the arrival times of a sound at the two ears. However, how the neural circuits in the auditory brainstem precisely integrate signals from the two ears, and what the underlying mechanisms are, remains to be understood. Recent studies have reported that variations of axon myelination in the auditory brainstem produces various axonal conduction velocities and sophisticated temporal dynamics, which have not been well characterized in most existing models of

From Clinic to Reality: Integrating Sound Field Testing and Hearing Quality Measures in Cochlear Implant Users.

Background: Traditional audiological assessment often does not properly reflect the challenges experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users in complex listening environments. Deficits in speech recognition and sound localization ability persist despite clinically satisfactory audiometric thresholds. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of acoustic environment complexity on speech recognition and sound localization ability in CI users compared to normal-hearing (NH) individuals and to assess subjective auditory performance using validated questionnaires. Methods: Thirt

Dual Representation of the Auditory Space.

Auditory spatial cues contribute to two distinct functions, of which one leads to explicit localization of sound sources and the other provides a location-linked representation of sound objects. Behavioral and imaging studies demonstrated right-hemispheric dominance for explicit sound localization. An early clinical case study documented the dissociation between the explicit sound localizations, which was heavily impaired, and fully preserved use of spatial cues for sound object segregation. The latter involves location-linked encoding of sound objects. We review here evidence pertaining to br

Improved horizontal directional hearing in bone conduction device users with acquired unilateral conductive hearing loss.

We examined horizontal directional hearing in patients with acquired severe unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL). All patients (n = 12) had been fitted with a bone conduction device (BCD) to restore bilateral hearing. The patients were tested in the unaided (monaural) and aided (binaural) hearing condition. Five listeners without hearing loss were tested as a control group while listening with a monaural plug and earmuff, or with both ears (binaural). We randomly varied stimulus presentation levels to assess whether listeners relied on the acoustic head-shadow effect (HSE) for horizontal

Chronic Unilateral Hearing Loss Disrupts Neural Tuning to Sound-Source Azimuth in the Rat Primary Auditory Cortex.

Accurate sound localization requires normal binaural input and precise auditory neuronal representation of sound spatial locations. Previous studies showed that unilateral hearing loss profoundly impaired the sound localization abilities. However, the underlying neural mechanism is not fully understood. Here, we investigated how chronic unilateral conductive hearing loss (UCHL) affected the neural tuning to sound source azimuth in the primary auditory cortex (AI). The UCHL was manipulated by the removal of tympanic membrane and malleus in the right ear of young (P14) rats and adult (P57) rats.

Auditory localization behaviour in visually deprived cats.

The ability to localize sounds in azimuth was tested in five cats that had been binocularly deprived of vision from birth for several months and in three normal age-matched controls. Brief tone bursts were presented in an eight-choice apparatus along 360 degrees of the azimuthal plane at constant elevation. Using positive reinforcement techniques, the cats were trained to walk from the centre of the 3 m diameter circular enclosure to the hidden loudspeakers. The distribution of sound localization error from 55 trials per cat at each speaker position was measured, and its standard deviation was
