Notched noise reveals differential improvement in the neural representation of the sound envelope.

Precise temporal coding in auditory nerve fibers is crucial for sound localization and listening in noise. However, at higher sound levels, typical of everyday listening situations, temporal coding to the stimulus envelope is poor in fibers of the on-frequency channel, i.e., those tuned to the carrier stimulus. We predict that changes in cochlear gain improve temporal coding of the stimulus envelope differentially across frequency channels. Both auditory nerve fiber recordings (in Mongolian gerbils of either sex) and human psychophysics confirm that weak temporal coding at higher levels is imp

Recurrent vs Non-Recurrent Convolutional Neural Networks for Heart Sound Classification.

Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been widely proposed for different tasks of heart sound analysis. This paper presents the results of a novel study on the performance of a conventional CNN in comparison to the different architectures of recurrent neural networks combined with CNN for the classification task of abnormal-normal heart sounds. The study considers various combinations of parallel and cascaded integration of CNN with Gated Recurrent Network (GRN) as well as Long- Short Term Memory (LSTM) and explores the accuracy and sensitivity of each integration independently, using the Phy

Feasibility of an electronic stethoscope system for monitoring neonatal bowel sounds.

OBJECTIVE: Bowel dysfunction remains a major problem in neonates. Traditional auscultation of bowel sounds as a diagnostic aid in neonatal gastrointestinal complications is limited by skill and inability to document and reassess. Consequently, we built a unique prototype to investigate the feasibility of an electronic monitoring system for continuous assessment of bowel sounds. METHOD: We attained approval by the Institutional Review Boards for the investigational study to test our system. The system incorporated a prototype stethoscope head with a built-in microphone connected to a digital r

Snoring Sounds Predict Obstruction Sites and Surgical Response in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome.

Snoring sounds generated by different vibrators of the upper airway may be useful indicators of obstruction sites in patients with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). This study aimed to investigate associations between snoring sounds, obstruction sites, and surgical responses (≥50% reduction in the apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] and <10 events/hour) in patients with OSAHS. This prospective cohort study recruited 36 OSAHS patients for 6-hour snoring sound recordings during in-lab full-night polysomnography, drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), and relocation pharyngoplasty. All pati

A dataset of heart sound regurgitation of patients with heart valve disorders.

Heart regurgitation is a cardiac condition characterized by the backward flow of blood, producing audible murmur sounds detectable during auscultation. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications affecting cardiac function. This article presents a comprehensive dataset of heart sound recordings, including aortic regurgitation (AR), mitral regurgitation (MR), tricuspid regurgitation (TR), and healthy heart sounds, collected from patients at a single hospital using an electronic stethoscope. For each participant, recordings were obtained from three standard chest locations, and all d

Airborne Acoustic Perception by a Jumping Spider.

Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are famous for their visually driven behaviors [1]. Here, however, we present behavioral and neurophysiological evidence that these animals also perceive and respond to airborne acoustic stimuli, even when the distance between the animal and the sound source is relatively large (∼3 m) and with stimulus amplitudes at the position of the spider of ∼65 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Behavioral experiments with the jumping spider Phidippus audax reveal that these animals respond to low-frequency sounds (80 Hz; 65 dB SPL) by freezing-a common anti-predatory behavior cha

Age-related myelin deficits in the auditory brain stem contribute to cocktail-party deficits.

Age-related hearing loss consists of both peripheral and central components and is an increasing global health concern. While peripheral hearing loss is well understood, central hearing loss- age-related changes in the central auditory pathways resulting in a listener's inability to process sound correctly -remains poorly understood. In this study, we focus on the pathway from the cochlear nucleus to the medial nucleus of the trapezoid body (MNTB), which depends on heavily myelinated axons for microsecond-level temporal precision required for sound localization. Using a combination of auditory

Abductor vocal fold palsy in the Shy-Drager syndrome presenting with snoring and sleep apnoea.

The case of an elderly male with Shy-Drager syndrome is presented. His presentation to the Sleep Clinic for assessment of snoring illustrates bilateral abductor vocal fold palsy as a rare presentation of the syndrome. This case emphasizes the need for thorough investigation of all patients with sleep-related breathing disorders with video and sound recordings prior to anaesthesia and surgery.

The Contributions of Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials and Acoustic Vestibular Stimulation to Our Understanding of the Vestibular System.

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency muscle reflexes typically recorded from the neck or eye muscles with surface electrodes. They are used clinically to assess otolith function, but are also interesting as they can provide information about the vestibular system and its activation by sound and vibration. Since the introduction of VEMPs more than 25 years ago, VEMPs have inspired animal and human research on the effects of acoustic vestibular stimulation on the vestibular organs, their projections and the postural muscles involved in vestibular reflexes. Heart sound segmentation based on homomorphic filtering.

BACKGROUND: Phonocardiography, the digital recording of heart sounds, is becoming increasingly popular as a primary detection system for diagnosing heart disorders and is relatively inexpensive. The electrocardiogram (ECG) is often used when recording the phonocardiogram in order to help identify the systolic and diastolic components. In this study, a heart sound segmentation algorithm has been developed which automatically separates the heart sound signal into these component parts. METHODS: 100 patients with normal and abnormal heart sounds were studied. The algorithm uses homomorphic filte

Heart energy signature spectrogram for cardiovascular diagnosis.

A new method and application is proposed to characterize intensity and pitch of human heart sounds and murmurs. Using recorded heart sounds from the library of one of the authors, a visual map of heart sound energy was established. Both normal and abnormal heart sound recordings were studied. Representation is based on Wigner-Ville joint time-frequency transformations. The proposed methodology separates acoustic contributions of cardiac events simultaneously in pitch, time and energy. The resolution accuracy is superior to any other existing spectrogram method. The characteristic energy signat

Utility of store-and-forward pediatric telecardiology evaluation in distinguishing normal from pathologic pediatric heart sounds.

Because pediatric cardiologists can accurately diagnose innocent murmurs by physical exam alone, the authors developed a system for remote cardiac auscultation. They hypothesized that their system could accurately classify auscultatory findings as normal/innocent or pathologic. Patients undergoing evaluation underwent examination, echocardiography, and heart sound recording. Pediatric cardiologists evaluated the heart sounds and classified the case as either normal/innocent or pathologic. They reviewed103 heart sound data sets; 85% of the cases were accurately classified as either normal/innoc

Tongue Shape Complexity in Children With and Without Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the hypothesis that younger speakers and speakers with more severe speech sound disorders are more likely to use simpler (undifferentiated) tongue gestures due to difficulties with, or immaturity of, lingual motor control. METHOD: The hypothesis is tested using cross-sectional secondary data analysis of synchronous audio and high-speed ultrasound recordings from children with idiopathic speech sound disorders (n = 30, aged 5;0-12;11 [years;months]) and typically developing children (n = 29, aged 5;8-12;10), producing /a/, /t/, /ɹ/, /l/, /s/, and /ʃ/ in an inte

An improved method of obtaining electrocochleography recordings from Nucleus Hybrid cochlear implant users.

Interest in electrocochleography (ECoG) has recently resurged as a potential tool to assess peripheral auditory function in cochlear implant (CI) users. ECoG recordings can be evoked using acoustic stimulation and recorded from an extra- or intra-cochlear electrode in CI users. Recordings reflect contributions from cochlear hair cells and the auditory nerve. We recently demonstrated the feasibility of using Custom Sound EP (clinically available software) to record ECoG responses in Nucleus Hybrid CI users with preserved acoustic hearing in the implanted ear (Abbas et al, 2017). While successfu

A Simple Method to Obtain Basic Acoustic Measures From Video Recordings as Subtitles.

PURPOSE: Sound pressure level (SPL) and fundamental frequency (fo) are very basic and important measures in the acoustical assessment of voice quality, and their variation influences also the vocal fold vibration characteristics. Most sophisticated laryngeal videostroboscopic systems therefore also measure and display the SPL and fo values directly over the video frames by means of a rather expensive special hardware setup. An alternative simple software-based method is presented here to obtain these measures as video subtitles. METHOD: The software extracts acoustic data from the video recor

Distinct cell classes in the superior paraolivary nucleus (SPN) region in the gerbil auditory brainstem revealed by in vivo physiological and anatomical characterization.

The superior para-olivary nucleus (SPN or SPON) is a prominent nucleus in the superior olivary complex of the auditory brainstem. The cellular composition of the nucleus reportedly differs between species, but a prominent recurring feature is the unusual characteristic to not respond during a sound but at its offset. Blocking glycine has shown that sound-induced inhibition is the mechanism, but the time course of the responsible synaptic events has not been directly measured in vivo. We obtained intracellular recordings in the Mongolian gerbil (meriones unguiculatus) with patch electrodes cont

Digital auscultation as a novel childhood pneumonia diagnostic tool for community clinics in Sylhet, Bangladesh: protocol for a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The WHO's Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) algorithm for diagnosis of child pneumonia relies on counting respiratory rate and observing respiratory distress to diagnose childhood pneumonia. IMCI case defination for pneumonia performs with high sensitivity but low specificity, leading to overdiagnosis of child pneumonia and unnecessary antibiotic use. Including lung auscultation in IMCI could improve specificity of pneumonia diagnosis. Our objectives are: (1) assess lung sound recording quality by primary healthcare workers (HCWs) from under-5 children with the

Acoustic monitoring and analyses of air gun, pile driving, vessel, and ambient sounds during the 2015 seismic surveys on the Sakhalin shelf.

During the summer of 2015, four 4D seismic surveys were conducted on the northeastern Sakhalin shelf near the feeding grounds of the Korean-Okhotsk (western) gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) population. In addition to the seismic surveys, onshore pile driving activities and vessel operations occurred. Forty autonomous underwater acoustic recorders provided data in the 2 Hz to15 kHz frequency band. Recordings were analyzed to evaluate the characteristics of impulses propagating from the seismic sources. Acoustic metrics analyzed comprised peak sound pressure level (PK), mean square sound pres

Application of machine learning techniques to automate speech mispronunciation detection in children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) are common in children and can affect academic and psychosocial outcomes. Clinical identification relies on expert auditory-perceptual assessment, which is time-intensive and may vary across raters. Automated screening tools could support triage when access to specialists is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) classifier for detecting mispronunciation errors in standardized pediatric speech recordings obtained using a structured fricative-focused word elicitation protocol, using expert-adjudicated labels

Auscultating heart and breath sounds through patients' gowns: who does this and does it matter?

BACKGROUND: Doctors are taught to auscultate with the stethoscope applied to the skin, but in practice may be seen applying the stethoscope to the gown. OBJECTIVES: To determine how often doctors auscultate heart and breath sounds through patients' gowns, and to assess the impact of this approach on the quality of the sounds heard. METHODS: A sample of doctors in the west of Scotland were sent an email in 2014 inviting them to answer an anonymous questionnaire about how they auscultated heart and breath sounds. Normal heart sounds from two subjects were recorded through skin, through skin an
