The insertion gain versus frequency, preferred by a group of moderately hearing-impaired, elderly, untrained hearing aid users was investigated both in everyday listening situations and in an acoustically specified test situation in the laboratory. The subjects used experimental binaural hearing aids with modified controls, which could be easily and accurately operated. They adjusted both gain and bass-cut while using the aids. Preferred insertion gain was compared with recommendations from three methods of prescriptive fitting. These methods significantly overestimated preferred gain by about

Source directivity is an integral part of room acoustic simulation, affecting not only the intensity and frequency balance of the direct sound depending on source orientation, but also room-acoustic parameters, such as the direct-to-reverberant energy ratio. While the directivity of a loudspeaker is time-invariant, the directivity of other sound sources, such as the human voice, varies over time. Whether these time-dependent directivity changes must be fully considered for a plausible binaural rendering of speech remains an open question, requiring rendering solutions that can reproduce time-v

Models of the voice source differ in their fits to natural voices, but it is unclear which differences in fit are perceptually salient. This study examined the relationship between the fit of five voice source models to 40 natural voices, and the degree of perceptual match among stimuli synthesized with each of the modeled sources. Listeners completed a visual sort-and-rate task to compare versions of each voice created with the different source models, and the results were analyzed using multidimensional scaling. Neither fits to pulse shapes nor fits to landmark points on the pulses predicted

Microphone arrays are known to enhance the directionality and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over single-channel sensors. This is considered beneficial in many applications such as video-conferencing systems and hearing aids. However, this advantage comes at the price of the sensation of spatial hearing. The spatial cues due to diffractions of the head and torso are lost if the array is not fitted in the ears. In this paper we present a system that incorporates binaural hearing synthesis into array signal processing, in an attempt to recover the three-dimensional sound image that a human listener

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To develop the technique of respiratory sound analysis for the diagnosis of dorsal displacement of the equine soft palate.
OBJECTIVES: To show that 1) the displaced soft palate can spontaneously vibrate in the presence of expiratory airflow; 2) the observed frequency of vibration can be detected in respiratory sound recordings; and 3) the frequency of vibrations measured in cadaveric specimens are similar to those obtained from audio spectra in exercising horses with DDSP.
METHODS: Palatal movements and respiratory sounds were recorded from artificially ventilat

Among diagnostic techniques for foetal monitoring, phonocardiography is gaining more and more interest for its low cost, passive nature and capability to detect some cardiac diseases. In spite of these characteristics, its use in clinical routine is still limited due to different troubles; for example, signals recorded through maternal abdomen show generally a quite low signal-to-noise ratio, so that detection and analysis of foetal heart sounds result very difficult. In this scenario, the availability of artificial phonocardiographic signals, simulated with conditions resembling different foe

In a group of 23 neonates with mean birth weights of 1470 g (range 1200-3980 g) who had orotracheal intubation for an average period of 12.6 days (range 5-96 days) sonagraphic frequency analysis of 86 stridors 1-3 hours after intubation was performed. According to the results of the frequency analysis more than 97.6% of the stridors are supraglottic (84 of 86 analyzed stridors). The laryngeal and tracheal type of stridor was recorded only in two children. The finding is surprising and does not confirm the widely accepted view that neonates after extubation are threatened with oedema of the lar

A step forward in the knowledge about the underlying physiological phenomena of thoracic sounds requires a reliable estimate of their time-frequency behavior that overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional spectrogram. A more detailed time-frequency representation could lead to a better feature extraction for diseases classification and stratification purposes, among others. In this respect, the aim of this study was to look for an omnibus technique to obtain the time-frequency representation (TFR) of thoracic sounds by comparing generic goodness-of-fit criteria in different simulated tho

PURPOSE: Supraglottic compression is frequently observed in individuals with dysphonia. It is commonly interpreted as an indication of excessive circumlaryngeal muscular tension and ventricular medialization. The purpose of this study was to describe the aerodynamic and acoustic impact of varying ventricular medialization in a canine model.
METHODS: Subglottal air pressure, glottal airflow, electroglottograph, acoustic signals, and high-speed video images were recorded in seven excised canine larynges mounted in vitro for laryngeal vibratory experimentation. The degree of gap between the vent

Current breathing flow estimation methods use tracheal breath sounds, but one step of the process, 'breath phase (inspiration/expiration) detection', is done by either assuming alternating breath phases or using a second acoustic channel of lung sounds. The alternating assumption is unreliable for long recordings, non-breathing events, such as apnea, swallow or cough change the alternating nature of the phases. Using lung sounds intensity requires the addition of a secondary channel and the associated labor. Hence, an automatic and accurate method for breath-phase detection using only tracheal

BACKGROUND: In Germany testing auditory low level skills has gained some popularity. However only few studies have provided norms. Prior to further testing we here aimed at establishing normal values for school children.
DESIGN: prospective study.
SAMPLE: School children attending 3rd and 4th grade.
DEPENDENT VARIABLES: just noticeable differences for intensity and frequency (JNDI, JNDF), gap detection (GD) monaural and binaural temporal order judgement (TOJB and TOJM).
STATISTICS: descriptive and correlational analysis.
RESULTS: Data did not follow a normal distribution, i. e. only few c

Passive acoustic surveys of soniferous marine communities can provide useful metrics for characterizing behavior, abundance, and ecological influences; however, they typically offer limited information about the spatial distribution of biological sources. Recent advances in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) offer the potential to conduct wide-area surveys of bioacoustic activity that would be logistically infeasible with traditional hydrophone measurements. Here, a 2.2 km DAS cable deployed in Narragansett Bay, RI, was used to map the spatial distribution of oyster toadfish chorusing over a 2

Anthropogenic noise has increased ambient sound levels across the globe, both underwater and on land. Among its many negative impacts, heightened noise can impair communication in vocal animals through acoustic masking. Conceptually, noise reduces the animal's communication space - the area in which an individual animal can effectively convey information to a conspecific listener. Previous studies have estimated the communication space using sound propagation models and/or behavioral studies. However, studies frequently equate signal recognition with signal detection - a necessary but not suff

The ability to vocalize is ubiquitous in vertebrates, but neural networks underlying vocal control remain poorly understood. Here, we performed simultaneous neuronal recordings in the frontal cortex and dorsal striatum (caudate nucleus, CN) during the production of echolocation pulses and communication calls in bats. This approach allowed us to assess the general aspects underlying vocal production in mammals and the unique evolutionary adaptations of bat echolocation. Our data indicate that before vocalization, a distinctive change in high-gamma and beta oscillations (50-80 Hz and 12-30 Hz, r

During the last days of incubation vocalization is a form of communication between the avian embryo and the incubating parent. Commonly, embryonic calls increase when ambient temperature (Ta) deviates from the optimal range, but no information is available on whether the characteristics of the calls differ between warming and cooling. Rate of calls, power spectra (distribution of the call's energy among its frequency components) and spectrograms (time-frequency plots) were obtained in chicken embryos during the external pipping phase, in normothermia (38 °C), during progressive cooling to Ta =

Birdsong is a learned behavior remarkable for its high degree of stereotypy. Nevertheless, adult birds display substantial rendition-by-rendition variation in the structure of individual song elements or "syllables." Previous work suggests that some of this variation is actively generated by the avian basal ganglia circuitry for purposes of motor exploration. However, it is unknown whether and how natural variations in premotor activity drive variations in syllable structure. Here, we recorded from the premotor nucleus robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA) in Bengalese finches and measured wh

The approach phase of landing vespertilionid bats ends with a group of calls, which either consists of buzz I alone or buzz I and buzz II. To understand the possible role of buzz II, we trained Myotis myotis to land on a vertical grid, and compared the flight and echolocation behavior during approach in trials with and without buzz II. During the approach, we did not find any differences in the echolocation behavior until the end of buzz I which indicated whether buzz II was emitted or not. However, bats flying from the periphery of the flight channel, such that they had to make a small turn a

Results of voice analysis in 96 elderly patients are presented. The objective of the study was to evaluate dysphonia and its morphologic conditions. Videolaryngostroboscopic (VLSS) examination distinguished between oedematic and atrophic form of senile dysphonia. Morphologic evaluation of the vocal fold mucosa with the use of light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the clinical diagnosis. Evaluation of aerodynamic factors of the larynx function, particularly MPT and VVI, suggested hyperfunctional and hypofunctional modes of the voice formation in patients wit

Spontaneous speech samples from four men diagnosed with apraxia of speech were transcribed to examine the ways in which they attempted to repair their speech errors. The study sought evidence for the presence of production or perceptual constraints in error revision and for the presence of a functional prearticulatory monitor. Three judges independently evaluated the transcriptions and audiotapes to identify instances in which speakers revised speech errors. They then coded the nature of the relationship between the error and the revision. In previous reports, the form of error repairs among n

Pitch perturbation is a measure of the cycle-to-cycle variation in vocal fold vibration. Perturbation can be assessed by means of electroglottographic or acoustic signals. The purpose of this study was to determine if these two analysis techniques are equivalent measures. The Laryngograph, an electroglottograph, and the Visi-Pitch, an acoustic analyzer, were used to measure pitch perturbation in 80 dysphonic subjects. Both instruments use Koike's formula to calculate relative average perturbation. While intra-subject variability appeared erratic, statistical analysis of intersubject data indic
