Effects of clinostat-microgravity on bone and calcium metabolism in rats.

Decreases in bone minerals and tissue volume after space flight have been observed in humans and animals, with a variety of results. Such data obtained from space flight experiments have given unsatisfactory results due to short periods of space flight and differences in age, body weights, and strain of animals used. Therefore, ground-based animal models have been developed in order to elucidate changes in bone affected by space flight. For example, a tail-suspended rat model has been established to study the effects of microgravity on bones by producing hind limb unloading. However, problems

Manifesto of space medicine: the next dermatologic frontier.

As the fields of astronomy, cosmology, and space travel move rapidly forward, so must space medicine. The manned space program and medical knowledge and support have developed in tandem. Dermatology will play a fundamental role in survival during space flight. This paper reviews past, present, and future accomplishments of the space program as they relate to medicine and characterizes some of dermatology's multiple roles in the future. It further explores the immunologic alterations noted during space flight and the attendant implications for health and well-being both in flight and on return

The immune system in space and microgravity.

Space flight and models that created conditions similar to those that occur during space flight have been shown to affect a variety of immunological responses. These have primarily been cell-mediated immune responses including leukocyte proliferation, cytokine production, and leukocyte subset distribution. The mechanisms and biomedical consequences of these changes remain to be established. Among the possible causes of space flight-induced alterations in immune responses are exposure to microgravity, exposure to stress, exposure to radiation, and many more as yet undetermined causes. Microbial resilience in space: Biofilms, risks and strategies for space exploration.

Biofilms are a community of microorganisms that can form on any surface, posing several challenges and significant medical issues. Their formation is not just limited to Earth but has also been observed in space stations and are termed as space biofilms. This is a major concern as certain biofilms can lead to high-risk compromising crew's health, while others have the capacity to corrode spacecraft and equipment, leading to instrument malfunction, which can jeopardize the mission. Additionally, the way biofilms form and behave in space is different from how they do on Earth due to microgravity

Green horizons: how plant synthetic biology can enable space exploration and drive on Earth sustainability.

As humanity looks towards expanding activity from low Earth orbit to the Moon and beyond, resource use efficiency and self-sustainability will be critical to ensuring success in the long term. Furthermore, solutions developed for the stringent requirements of space will be equally valuable in meeting sustainability goals here on Earth. Advances in synthetic biology allow us to harness the complex metabolism of life to produce the materials we need in situ. Translating those lessons learned from microbial systems to more carbon-efficient photosynthetic organisms is an area of growing interest.

The Memory of Rice Response to Spaceflight Stress: From the Perspective of Metabolomics and Proteomics.

The stress response of plants to spaceflight has been confirmed in contemporary plants, and plants retained the memory of spaceflight through methylation reaction. However, how the progeny plants adapt to this cross-generational stress memory was rarely reported. Here, we used the ShiJian-10 retractable satellite carrying Dongnong416 rice seeds for a 12.5-day on-orbit flight and planted the F2 generation after returning to the ground. We evaluated the agronomic traits of the F2 generation plants and found that the F2 generation plants had no significant differences in plant height and number o

The role of nutrition in space exploration: Implications for sensorimotor, cognition, behavior and the cerebral changes due to the exposure to radiation, altered gravity, and isolation/confinement hazards of spaceflight.

Multi-year crewed space exploration missions are now on the horizon; therefore, it is important that we understand and mitigate the physiological effects of spaceflight. The spaceflight hazards-radiation, isolation, confinement, and altered gravity-have the potential to contribute to neuroinflammation and produce long-term cognitive and behavioral effects-while the fifth hazard, distance from earth, limits capabilities to mitigate these risks. Accumulated evidence suggests that nutrition has an important role in optimizing cognition and reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases caused by

Mycology studies in space.

The postflight phase of the Apollo MEED mycology attempts to identify survival according to exposure to specific quantitative space flight factors, while the second phase of studies identifies qualitative change other than cell survival [57]. Initial changes incurred in space on a fungal cell can be monitored and further examined on return of the fungal species test system to Earth. The postflight studies present a better understanding of the space environmental influences on living cells and a more clear understanding of the fungal species under examination.

[Man in the condition of weightlessness (author's transl)].

In the space flights by the USA and USSR to date adequate experience has been obtained on the adaptation of man to living conditions in space--with the technical assistance of an artificial protective atmosphere in the space ship or space suit--and to the singular factor of "weightlessness" (microgravity, low gravity) and how he re-adjusts again after returning to a gravitational field. There is no ultimate or absolute physiological barrier for long term space flight--with one exception: decalcification of the skeleton. For short space flights, however, space sickness is a serious disorder.

Issues of health care under weightlessness.

This review will address issues of effects of space flights on the body. Cardiovascular deconditioning often induce symptoms like orthostatic intolerance after flight, and during flight there will be space motion sickness during the first few days with headache, malaise, nausea and eventually vomiting. These symptoms disappear and do not interfere with the performance of the astronauts after several days. During long-term flights, effects will be muscle atrophy and calcium loss from the skeleton. Radiation effects will be a significant issue, increasing with the length of the space flight. Als

Human muscle sympathetic nerve activity and plasma noradrenaline kinetics in space.

Astronauts returning from space have reduced red blood cell masses, hypovolaemia and orthostatic intolerance, marked by greater cardio-acceleration during standing than before spaceflight, and in some, orthostatic hypotension and presyncope. Adaptation of the sympathetic nervous system occurring during spaceflight may be responsible for these postflight alterations. We tested the hypotheses that exposure to microgravity reduces sympathetic neural outflow and impairs sympathetic neural responses to orthostatic stress. We measured heart rate, photoplethysmographic finger arterial pressure, peron

Surgery for interplanetary space missions.

As human spaceflight expands beyond low Earth orbit, the ability to deliver advanced surgical care in space becomes critical. Current medical provisions on board the International Space Station (ISS) are geared towards treating low-risk conditions, with a 'stabilize-and-evacuate' principle for more complex cases-an approach that is not viable for extended missions to the Moon and Mars. This review summarizes research conducted around space surgery, with a particular focus on surgical robotics. Experiments in parabolic flight and analogue environments demonstrate that, provided the operator, pa

The hierarchical stratum response system of organism to microgravity during spaceflight.

With the advancement of manned spaceflight technology, significant progress has been made in the fields of aerospace medicine and space biology to address the needs of astronauts in terms of health, safety, and mission performance. The physiological and pathological changes during microgravity exposure, including perception, response, and adaptation mechanisms, are gradually being unraveled. This study aimed to systematically summarize the common features of various molecules and structures within the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus responsible for sensing microgravity. It further examin

PhysAstro-Pose: Physics-Inspired Semi-Supervised Human Pose Estimation in Microgravity Environments.

Human pose estimation in orbit is critical for astronaut health monitoring, task assistance, and intelligent human-robot interaction aboard space stations. However, in microgravity, human poses exhibit arbitrary orientations and are often affected by severe occlusion and complex background interference, while the scarcity of annotated in-orbit data makes it difficult to directly transfer models trained on ground-based datasets. Existing semi-supervised methods also lack explicit constraints from human structural topology and pose-related physical priors, which often leads to unreasonable pseud

Building and Operating a Low-Cost Elevated Carbon Dioxide Growth Chamber to Evaluate Microgreen Physiology under Spaceflight-Relevant CO2 Levels.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) levels aboard crewed spacecraft routinely exceed 3,000 ppm, significantly higher than atmospheric concentrations on Earth. Sustained exposure to extreme CO2 (exCO2) at levels above 3,000 ppm can alter plant growth, physiology, and nutritional composition. Yet, few laboratory systems can reliably reproduce these exCO2 concentrations. This protocol describes an accessible and low-cost method for constructing a benchtop growth chamber capable of maintaining stable CO2 levels above 3,000 ppm for plant experiments. The chamber is created by modifying a benchtop incubator to inc

Large Language Models as Behavioral Health Teammates in Long-Duration Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: Long-duration spaceflight exposes crews to isolated, confined, and extreme environments where chronic stress and limited real-time support heighten interpersonal tensions. Large language models (LLMs) could serve as onboard artificial intelligence teammates for de-escalation, but could also exacerbate tensions by endorsing hostility or exclusion. This study evaluates whether LLMs demonstrate prosocial conflict mediation behaviors vs. failure modes that could elevate interpersonal risk. METHODS: We tested four LLMs (GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4, Grok 4, Gemini 2.5 Pro) using a Dartmout

Rotifers in space: transcriptomic response of the bdelloid rotifer Adineta vaga aboard the International Space Station.

BACKGROUND: The biological effects of spaceflight remain incompletely understood, even in humans (Homo sapiens), and are largely unexplored in non-traditional models such as bdelloid rotifers. RESULTS: This study analyzes the transcriptomic changes experienced by Adineta vaga, a bdelloid rotifer aboard the International Space Station (ISS), using RNA sequencing. The aim was to investigate the overall effect of spaceflight in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on these organisms. To this end, new hardware was developed to enable autonomous culturing of rotifers with minimal astronaut intervention. The stud

Ocular trauma in microgravity: In-flight diagnostics and extraterrestrial strategies for management.

Long-duration spaceflight missions (including the International Space Station [ISS]) are in one of the most remote and harsh environments humans live and work in. Medical emergencies in space are even more complicated in an already high-risk environment. Despite training, ISS crewmembers face many challenges in diagnosing and managing disease with limited diagnostic capability and equipment on the ISS, restricted medication availability, delayed access to medical professionals; and the latency of space missions. Ocular trauma (e.g., cabin contact with equipment, chemical exposure, and foreign

Safety protocols, precautions, and countermeasures aboard the International Space Station to prevent ocular injury.

The International Space Station (ISS) is a $100 billion epicenter of human activity in the vacuum of space that displays mankind's collective endeavor to explore the cosmic frontier. Even within the marvels of technological sophistication aboard the ISS, the human eye remains a highly vulnerable structure. In the absence of multiple layers of protection and risk assessments, crewmembers would face a substantial increase in vulnerability to ocular injury. Aside from stringent preflight screening criteria for astronauts, the ISS is equipped with ophthalmic medications, environmental control and
