Vection is modulated by the semantic meaning of stimuli and experimental instructions.

Vection strength is modulated by the semantic meanings of stimuli. In experiment 1--even though vection stimuli were of uniform size, color, and luminance--when they also had semantic meaning as falling objects, vection was inhibited. Specifically, stimuli perceived as feathers, petals, and leaves did not effectively induce vection. In experiment 2 we used the downward motion of identical dots to induce vection. Participants observed stimuli while holding either an umbrella or a wooden sword. Results showed that vection was inhibited when participants held the umbrella and the stimuli was perc

Visuo-motor and interoceptive influences on peripersonal space representation following spinal cord injury.

Peripersonal space (PPS) representation is modulated by information coming from the body. In paraplegic individuals, whose lower limb sensory-motor functions are impaired or completely lost, the representation of PPS around the feet is reduced. However, passive motion can have short-term restorative effects. What remains unclear is the mechanisms underlying this recovery, in particular with regard to the contribution of visual and motor feedback and of interoception. Using virtual reality technology, we dissociated the motor and visual feedback during passive motion in paraplegics with complet

The medial entorhinal cortex encodes multisensory spatial information.

Animals employ spatial information in multisensory modalities to navigate their natural environments. However, it is unclear whether the brain encodes such information in separate cognitive maps or integrates it all into a single, universal map. We address this question in the microcircuit of the medial entorhinal cortex (MEC), a cognitive map of space. Using cellular-resolution calcium imaging, we examine the MEC of mice navigating virtual reality tracks, where visual and auditory cues provide comparable spatial information. We uncover two cell types: "unimodality cells" and "multimodality ce

Interaction between Spatial and Feature Attention in Posterior Parietal Cortex.

Lateral intraparietal (LIP) neurons encode a vast array of sensory and cognitive variables. Recently, we proposed that the flexibility of feature representations in LIP reflect the bottom-up integration of sensory signals, modulated by feature-based attention (FBA), from upstream feature-selective cortical neurons. Moreover, LIP activity is also strongly modulated by the position of space-based attention (SBA). However, the mechanisms by which SBA and FBA interact to facilitate the representation of task-relevant spatial and non-spatial features in LIP remain unclear. We recorded from LIP neur

Size perception in hemianopia and neglect.

Some debate remains as to whether underestimation of the horizontal size of objects in the left part of visual space is a general disturbance in spatial neglect. The issue is unclear because size perception may be influenced by factors other than neglect, e.g. visual field defects such as hemianopia. To disentangle these effects, we compared the performance of patients with pure neglect, pure hemianopia or both on the same size-comparison test. Whereas pure neglect was accompanied by misperception of horizontal object size, patients with pure hemianopia showed an even greater impairment of siz

Predictable object motion is extrapolated to support visual working memory for surface features.

Space and time support visual working memory (VWM) by providing incidental reference frames for task-relevant information. While this has been studied with stationary items, natural scenes also contain moving objects, whose positions change over time, often in a predictable manner. We investigated if predictable item motion is leveraged to facilitate VWM for surface features. In a dynamic change-detection task, participants memorised the colours of three disks moving at constant speed in different directions before disappearing. After a retention interval, the disks reappeared (a) at the movem

Shrinking the Skin: Motion Results in Compressive Mislocalization of Stimuli Applied 10 s Post-Motion.

Localizing touch on the skin requires integration of multiple spatial signals, including reference landmarks and motion cues. It is well known that motion patterns can bias the perceived endpoint of motion. However, it is unknown whether static touch presented post-motion is also distorted. To investigate this, we presented space-changing motion patterns and tested position perception 1 s and 10 s post-motion. We used a brush moving along the forearm at 15 cm s-1, brushing 4.5 cm skin patches near the elbow and near the wrist, skipping a 10-cm long metal-shielded patch in the middle ('numb spo

OBJECTIVE: To examine the cognitive profile of patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) on the basis of a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. METHODS: Embase, Medline and PsycInfo were searched for studies reporting ≥1 neuropsychological test in both DM1 patients and healthy controls. Search, data extraction and risk of bias analysis were independently performed by two authors to minimize error. Neuropsychological tests were categorized into 12 cognitive domains and effect sizes (Hedges' g) were calculated for each domain and for tests administered in ≥5 studies. RESU

Effects of interaural intensity difference on the processing of interaural time difference in the owl's nucleus laminaris.

Interaural time and intensity differences (ITD and IID) are processed independently in the owl's auditory system. This paper examines whether this independence is established in nucleus laminaris (NL), the first site of ITD processing. A plot of discharge rate against time difference (ITD curve) is sinusoidal in NL. The ITDs that produce the peaks are called the most favorable ITDs, and those that produce the troughs are called the least favorable ITDs. IID had little effect on the discharge rates of laminaris neurons for the most and least favorable ITDs. The degree of peak-trough modulation

Human heading judgments in the presence of moving objects.

When moving toward a stationary scene, people judge their heading quite well from visual information alone. Much experimental and modeling work has been presented to analyze how people judge their heading for stationary scenes. However, in everyday life, we often move through scenes that contain moving objects. Most models have difficulty computing heading when moving objects are in the scene, and few studies have examined how well humans perform in the presence of moving objects. In this study, we tested how well people judge their heading in the presence of moving objects. We found that peop

Static background distance modulates reaction time and interceptive timing for approaching targets in a real three-dimensional environment.

Rapid and accurate processing of approaching objects is critical for everyday activities and sports. Environmental context in three-dimensional (3D) space provides depth that may modulate visuomotor responses to motion in depth, yet its influence on rapid motor reactions and temporal prediction remains unclear. This study examined whether static background distance affects reaction time (RT) and interceptive timing for approaching targets in a real 3D environment. Fourteen participants completed RT and interceptive tasks with backgrounds positioned 0.6 m (near), 4 m (middle), and 8 m (far) fro

Toward a spatiotemporal neurocognitive framework of manipulable object processing.

The neural processing of small handheld manipulable objects (henceforth tools) involves a series of brain regions that have been well characterized over the last decades, both anatomically and functionally. But neural processing unfolds over time, requiring the static spatial descriptions that emerged from this research to be accompanied by temporal dynamics between the nodes of the tool network. Temporally-resolved techniques (such as M/EEG) are critical in this endeavor. Yet, to date, studies using such techniques have not been integrated with this spatial depiction. We analyzed M/EEG tempor

Dynamic spatial coding in parietal cortex mediates tactile-motor transformation.

Movements towards touch on the body require integrating tactile location and body posture information. Tactile processing and movement planning both rely on posterior parietal cortex (PPC) but their interplay is not understood. Here, human participants received tactile stimuli on their crossed and uncrossed feet, dissociating stimulus location relative to anatomy versus external space. Participants pointed to the touch or the equivalent location on the other foot, which dissociates sensory and motor locations. Multi-voxel pattern analysis of concurrently recorded fMRI signals revealed that tac

Subjective visual vertical in patients with idiopatic scoliosis.

Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is characterized by a three-dimensional deviation of the vertebral column and its etiopathogenesis is unknown. Various factors are associated with idiopathic scoliosis, among these a prominent role has been attributed to integration of vestibular information with graviception for perception of space. Subjective visual vertical (SVV) is a sensitive sign of verticality perception. The aim of this study was to determine if SVV in adolescents with IS is different from healthy controls. Examination of SVV was performed using the bucket method. Binocular measurements of SVV

Right-hemispheric dominance for visual remapping in humans.

We review evidence showing a right-hemispheric dominance for visuo-spatial processing and representation in humans. Accordingly, visual disorganization symptoms (intuitively related to remapping impairments) are observed in both neglect and constructional apraxia. More specifically, we review findings from the intervening saccade paradigm in humans--and present additional original data--which suggest a specific role of the asymmetrical network at the temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) in the right hemisphere in visual remapping: following damage to the right dorsal posterior parietal cortex (PPC)

Lesions of the cerebellar nodulus and uvula in monkeys: effect on otolith-ocular reflexes.

We studied two rhesus monkeys before and after surgical ablation of the nodulus and uvula (Nod/Uv) of the cerebellum. Three-axis eye movements were recorded with the magnetic-field scleral search coil system during a variety of vestibular and ocular motor tasks. Here we describe the effects of the Nod/Uv lesions on dynamic (head translation) and static (head tilt) otolith-mediated vestibulo-ocular reflexes. The main findings were: 1. eye velocity during sinusoidal vertical translation (1.5 Hz) was reduced by 59% in the dark and 36% in the light; 2. eye velocity during steps of horizontal trans

Vestibular syndrome: a change in internal spatial representation.

The vestibular system contributes to a wide range of functions from reflexes to spatial representation. This paper reviews behavioral, perceptive, and cognitive data that highlight the role of changes in internal spatial representation on the vestibular syndrome. Firstly, we review how visual vertical perception and postural orientation depend on multiple reference frames and multisensory integration and how reference frames are selected according to the status of the peripheral vestibular system (i.e., unilateral or bilateral hyporeflexia), the environmental constraints (i.e., sensory cues),

Getting around and communicating with the environment: visual cognition and language in Parkinson's disease.

Vision in PD. In PD an impairment of dopaminergic neurons of the preganglionic retina and a defect of the retinal nerve fibers (axons of the retinal ganglion cells) has been demonstrated and a correlation of loss of spatial contrast sensitivity, with the progression of motor impairment in PD has been described. These low level visual deficits contribute but do not directly explain behavioural visual deficits in PD involving spatial cognition, internal representation, space navigation and visual categorization. Language deficits in non-demented PD patients can include impairments in comprehensi

Visual cognition: a new look at the two-visual systems model.

In this paper, we argue that no valid comparison between visual representations can arise unless provision is made for three critical properties: their direction of fit, their direction of causation and the level of their conceptual content. The conceptual content in turn is a function of the level of processing. Representations arising from earlier stages of processing of visual input have very little or no conceptual content. Higher order representations get their conceptual content from the connections between visual cognition and other parts of the human cognitive system. The two other cri

Egocentrism, allocentrism, and Asperger syndrome.

In this paper, we attempt to make a distinction between egocentrism and allocentrism in social cognition, based on the distinction that is made in visuo-spatial perception. We propose that it makes a difference to mentalizing whether the other person can be understood using an egocentric ("you") or an allocentric ("he/she/they") stance. Within an egocentric stance, the other person is represented in relation to the self. By contrast, within an allocentric stance, the existence or mental state of the other person needs to be represented as independent from the self. We suggest here that people
