Sparganosis (Spirometra) in Europe in the Molecular Era.

Sparganosis is a relatively neglected foodborne and waterborne disease caused by species of the tapeworm genus Spirometra, the global distribution of which has not been sufficiently recognized. Known mainly as a zoonosis of East Asia, its species are native to all inhabited continents including Europe. Spirometra has been reported from numerous wildlife species from 17 European countries, and a critical review confirmed 17 autochthonous and 8 imported human clinical cases. We present the first molecular evidence of the coincident presence of 2 species in Europe and review the current distribut

Case Report: Sparganosis of the Cauda Equina.

Spinal sparganosis of the cauda equina has been rarely reported. A 54-year-old man presented at the hospital after having experienced lower back pain for 10 months, progressive weakness and numbness of the left leg for 4 months, and urinary incontinence for 3 weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbosacral spine revealed a heterogeneous enhancing mass at the T12-S1 level. Spinal sparganosis was diagnosed by histological examination and molecular identification of the parasite in the tissue section. The patient was treated with a high dose of praziquantel because the parasitic mass was onl

Diagnosis and surgical management of orbital sparganosis.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Orbital sparganosis represents an extremely rare condition with only a few cases being reported in literature. Here we describe cases of orbital sparganosis, including their etiology, clinical findings, and surgical outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on patients with orbital sparganosis, who were treated at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, of Sun Yat-sen University, China between 2000 and 2012. RESULTS: Five patients (three males and two females, one right orbit and four left orbits) were identified. Their mean age was 14.8 years (range = 6-3

Sparganosis: an under-recognised zoonosis in Australia?

Sparganosis is a rare zoonotic parasitosis that is sporadically reported worldwide. In Australia, the causative tapeworms are considered endemic in wildlife animals, however, there have been only five reported human infections. We present three additional cases of sparganosis, involving two Australian born gentlemen who have never travelled overseas and a woman who emigrated from Ethiopia. The first man presented with two unusual subcutaneous lumps that migrated along the anterior abdominal wall connected by a tunnel. The second man presented with two separate lumps, one on the thigh and the o

Scrotal sparganosis: with an emphasis on ultrasonographic findings.

Scrotal sparganosis is a rare parasitic infestation in which humans serve as the second intermediate host for a tapeworm of the genus Spirometra. We present one case of a 44-year-old man with an emphasis on the ultrasound (US) findings. The patient had a palpable scrotal subcutaneous nodule and a history of eating raw snakes 7 years prior. On US, we noted a well-defined, long, tubular, serpiginous lesion that had three different echoic layers, i.e., a peripheral low echoic rim, an intermediate high echoic line, and an inner slightly low echoic content that had a tram-tract appearance.

[A case report of sparganosis mansoni in the cheek].

Sparganosis mansoni is a kind of parasitic infective disease, rarely seen in clinic. A case of sparganosis mansoni is reported in this article. The patient was a 25-year-old male, who came to Xiangya Hospital on September 26, 2007 because of a mass in the left cheek. A white tape-like body was found during the operation and recognized to be a live parasite. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay of the serum revealed positivity against Spirometra mansoni. The final identification proved that the white tape-like body was Sparganum mansoni. The disease of this patient was caused by eating raw flesh o

CT and MR characteristics of cerebral sparganosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sparganosis is a rare parasitic infection in humans by a larval cestode of the genus Spirometra. Preoperative diagnosis of cerebral sparganosis in the past has been very difficult. Our objective was to evaluate the CT and MR features of cerebral sparganosis in order to make a definite diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 25 patients (13 male and 12 female; age range, 9-83 years) who proved to have cerebral sparganosis. Fifteen patients underwent MR imaging: 2 patients had CT scanning, and the remaining 8 had both CT and MR scanning. We focused

A case of sparganosis mimicking a varicose vein.

Recent advances in radiological and serological techniques have enabled easier preoperative diagnosis of sparganosis. However, due to scarcity of cases, sparganosis has been often regarded as a disease of other etiologic origin unless the parasite is confirmed in the lesion. We experienced a case of sparganosis mimicking a varicose vein in terms of clinical manifestations and radiological findings. Sparganosis should be included among the list of differential diagnosis with the varicose vein.

[A case of sparganosis with eosinophilic pleural effusion].

A 61 year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of exertional dyspnea and presented with left pleural effusion. Laboratory findings showed peripheral eosinophilia and a slightly elevated inflammatory reaction. Chest X-ray film and CT revealed left pleural effusion, but there were no particular abnormal findings on the lung fields. Pleural effusion was exudative, yellowish and contained numerous eosinophils. His detailed medical history showed that he had eaten uncooked snakes, which led us to suspect parasite diseases. Multiple-dot ELISA method was performed to detect specific anti-

Fournier's gangrene associated with sparganosis in the scrotum.

Fournier's gangrene is a necrotizing fasciitis of the scrotum or perineum that may extend by way of the fascial planes to the penis and the anterior abdominal wall up to the clavicles, buttocks, or lower extremities. It is a life-threatening progressive disease that requires aggressive antibiotic therapy and early radical debridement. Sparganosis is a parasitic infection that occurs principally in cats and dogs, but human infestations have been reported, albeit rarely. Recently, we experienced a case of Fournier's gangrene associated with sparganosis in the scrotum, which was treated with anti

Sparganosis presenting as a lateral neck mass.

BACKGROUND: Cervical sparganosis is rare, and its rarity makes it difficult to be distinguished from tumors. A case of cervical sparganosis is reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: An 80-year-old man was initially seen with a painless lateral neck mass for 3 months, which was initially diagnosed as cervical lymphadenopathy. Laboratory studies revealed eosinophilia, and the patient recalled that he had frequently taken mountain water. Serologic study of human sparganosis by a monoclonal antibody-based competition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was positive. Surgical excision was performed,

Testicular sparganosis in a child from Uruguay.

A patient 9 years old had a painless tumor in the left testicle. The left testicle measured about 5 cm long and about 3 cm wide and was stony hard in part. From an echographic image, the patient was diagnosed to have a hematoma in the left testicle. The left testicle was surgically removed. From histological observations, burrows were surrounded by numerous eosinophils in the testicle, epididymis and tunica vaginalis. Cross sections of spargana were in the burrows. Severe granulomatous orchitis and epididymitis were around the burrows. This case was the second one of human sparganosis in Urugu

A case of intramuscular sparganosis in the sartorius muscle.

Intramuscular sparganosis is not common, and its rarity makes it difficult to be distinguished from soft tissue tumors. A case of rare intramuscular sparganosis is reported. A 44-year-old man presented with a painful mass in the left thigh for 8 months, which was initially diagnosed a as soft tissue tumor. Ultrasonography and MRI revealed a multilobulated mass in the sartorius muscle. After the needle biopsy under the guidance of ultrasonography, sparganum was discovered under microscopic examination of the excised tissue. Surgical excision was performed, and a live larva of sparganum was remo

Cerebral sparganosis in an East Timorese refugee.

OBJECTIVE: To report the first case of cerebral sparganosis diagnosed in Australia. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 23-year-old East Timorese refugee, whose diet before migration included raw snakes and frogs, presented with a generalised tonic-clonic seizure and a nine-month history of episodic left hemianaesthesia. Computerised axial tomography of the brain showed a right frontal lesion, which was excised, and histological examination demonstrated changes typical of sparganosis. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: Excision of the lesion resulted in cure. Postoperative eosinophilia and a subcutaneous nodule pre

Abdominal sparganosis in Ecuador: a case report.

Sparganosis, infection with plerocercoids of the pseudophyllidean tapeworm Spirometra, rarely has been described in Ecuador. We report the details of a human case of sparganosis identified serendipitously in the course of an abdominal hernia repair. The parasite was found moving freely upon the external oblique fascia adjacent to the site of a direct abdominal hernia. The organism was recovered intact, photographed while alive and preserved for subsequent detailed morphological studies. The presumed route of entry into this patient was percutaneous, after application of a poultice of snake fle
