Serological evidence of persistence of Japanese encephalitis virus activity in Bihar, India.

A total of 64 sera samples from ducks, 212 from 245 fowls, 1 from 16 sparrows and 5 from human were examined for HI and CF antibodies to Japanese encephalitis (JE), West Nile (NW), Dengue-2 (DN-2), and Chikungunya (CHIK) viruses. The results were compared with those obtained earlier while examining pigs' sera from the same area. The results revealed that ducks, fowls and peridomestic sparrows possessed antibodies to JEV. JEV activity in ducks and fowls was significantly higher compared to its activity in pigs in the same area reported earlier indicating persistence of its activity.

Comparison of argentinean saint louis encephalitis virus non-epidemic and epidemic strain infections in an avian model.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV, Flavivirus, Flaviviridae) is an emerging mosquito-borne pathogen in South America, with human SLEV encephalitis cases reported in Argentina and Brazil. Genotype III strains of SLEV were isolated from Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in Cordoba, Argentina in 2005, during the largest SLEV outbreak ever reported in South America. The present study tested the hypothesis that the recent, epidemic SLEV strain exhibits greater virulence in birds as compared with a non-epidemic genotype III strain isolated from mosquitoes in Santa Fe Province 27 years earlier. Experimental evolution of an RNA virus in wild birds: evidence for host-dependent impacts on population structure and competitive fitness.

Within hosts, RNA viruses form populations that are genetically and phenotypically complex. Heterogeneity in RNA virus genomes arises due to error-prone replication and is reduced by stochastic and selective mechanisms that are incompletely understood. Defining how natural selection shapes RNA virus populations is critical because it can inform treatment paradigms and enhance control efforts. We allowed West Nile virus (WNV) to replicate in wild-caught American crows, house sparrows and American robins to assess how natural selection shapes RNA virus populations in ecologically relevant hosts

Serologic evidence for West Nile virus infection in birds in the New York City vicinity during an outbreak in 1999.

As part of an investigation of an encephalitis outbreak in New York City, we sampled 430 birds, representing 18 species in four orders, during September 13-23, 1999, in Queens and surrounding counties. Overall, 33% were positive for West Nile (WN) virus-neutralizing antibodies, and 0.5% were positive for St. Louis encephalitis virus-neutralizing antibodies. By county, Queens had the most seropositive birds for WN virus (50%); species with the greatest seropositivity for WN virus (sample sizes were at least six) were Domestic Goose, Domestic Chicken, House Sparrow, Canada Goose, and Rock Dove.

Widespread dispersal of Borrelia burgdorferi-infected ticks collected from songbirds across Canada.

Millions of Lyme disease vector ticks are dispersed annually by songbirds across Canada, but often overlooked as the source of infection. For clarity on vector distribution, we sampled 481 ticks (12 species and 3 undetermined ticks) from 211 songbirds (42 species/subspecies) nationwide. Using PCR, 52 (29.5%) of 176 Ixodes ticks tested were positive for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. Immature blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis , collected from infested songbirds had a B. burgdorferi infection prevalence of 36% (larvae, 48%; nymphs, 31%). Notably, Ixodes affinis is repo

The value of avian genomics to the conservation of wildlife.

BACKGROUND: Genomic studies in non-domestic avian models, such as the California condor and white-throated sparrow, can lead to more comprehensive conservation plans and provide clues for understanding mechanisms affecting genetic variation, adaptation and evolution.Developing genomic tools and resources including genomic libraries and a genetic map of the California condor is a prerequisite for identification of candidate loci for a heritable embryonic lethal condition. The white-throated sparrow exhibits a stable genetic polymorphism (i.e. chromosomal rearrangements) associated with variatio

Geographic variation among St. Louis encephalitis virus strains in the viremic responses of avian hosts.

We studied the capacity of 44 strains of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus to induce viremia in an epidemiologically important wild avian host, the House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). Selected virus strains were also inoculated at varying doses into 3-week-old chicks. Viremic responses were analyzed in terms of the proportion of inoculated nestling and adult birds which became viremic, the mean duration and the mean peak titer of viremia. Infectivity of avian sera was determined by plaque assay in primary duck embryo cell cultures. The susceptibility of the House Sparrow to viremic infection w

Experimental Exposure to Noise Alters Gut Microbiota in a Captive Songbird.

Noise pollution is an unprecedented evolutionary pressure on wild animals that can lead to alteration of stress hormone levels and changes in foraging behavior. Both corticosterone and feeding behavior can have direct effects on gut bacteria, as well as indirect effects through changes in gut physiology. Therefore, we hypothesized that exposure to noise will alter gut microbial communities via indirect effects on glucocorticoids and foraging behaviors. We exposed captive white-crowned sparrows to city-like noise and measured each individuals' corticosterone level, food intake, and gut microbia

Reduced West Nile Virus Transmission Around Communal Roosts of Great-Tailed Grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus).

West Nile virus has caused several outbreaks among humans in the Phoenix metropolitan area (Arizona, southwest USA) within the last decade. Recent ecologic studies have implicated Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex tarsalis as the mosquito vectors and identified three abundant passerine birds-great-tailed grackle (Quiscalus mexicanus), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), and house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus)-as key amplifiers among vertebrates. Nocturnal congregations of certain species have been suggested as critical for late summer West Nile virus amplification. We evaluated the hypothesis tha

Limited interdecadal variation in mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) and avian host competence for Western equine encephalomyelitis virus (Togaviridae: Alphavirus).

Historically, western equine encephalomyelitis virus (WEEV) caused large equine and human epidemics in the Americas from Canada into Argentina. Despite recent enhanced surveillance for West Nile virus, there have been few reports of equine or human cases and little documented enzootic activity of WEEV. During the past three years, WEEV has been active again in California, but without human or equine cases. In the current study, we compared host and vector competence of representative WEEV isolates made during each decade over the past 60 years using white-crowned sparrows, house sparrows, and

First serological evidence of West Nile virus infection in wild birds in Northern Algeria.

While the epidemiology of Flaviviruses has been extensively studied in most of the Mediterranean basin, little is known about the current situation in Algeria. In order to detect the circulation of West Nile (WNV) and Usutu viruses (USUV) in Kabylia, 165 sera were collected from two wild birds species, namely the long distance migrant Turdus philomelos (song thrush) (n = 92) and the resident Passer domesticus (house sparrow) (n = 73). A total of 154 sera were first analyzed by commercial competition ELISA. WNV and USUV micro-neutralization tests were performed on all c-ELISA positive sera and

Pragmatic inferences in high-functioning adults with autism and Asperger syndrome.

Although people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often have severe problems with pragmatic aspects of language, little is known about their pragmatic reasoning. We carried out a behavioral study on high-functioning adults with autistic disorder (n = 11) and Asperger syndrome (n = 17) and matched controls (n = 28) to investigate whether they are capable of deriving scalar implicatures, which are generally considered to be pragmatic inferences. Participants were presented with underinformative sentences like "Some sparrows are birds". This sentence is logically true, but pragmatically inappr

Viremic enhancement due to transovarially acquired antibodies to St. Louis encephalitis virus in birds.

Adult house sparrows (Passer domesticus) were captured and experimentally inoculated with St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus to produce high concentrations of circulating antiviral antibody. Nestlings, 5-7 and 14-16 days of age, from SLE immune adult females and challenged with SLE virus, exhibited viremic enhancement by producing viremias of greater duration and magnitude than did controls. Nestlings possessing maternal antibody and challenged with SLE virus between 8 and 13 days of age did not produce viremias differing significantly from controls in magnitude, duration, or temporal appearan

Role of peridomestic birds in the transmission of St. Louis encephalitis virus in southern California.

In response to the 1984 St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) epidemic in the Los Angeles Basin of southern California (USA), an investigative program was initiated to evaluate the interactive components of the SLE virus transmission cycle. From 1987 through 1996 (10 yr), 52,589 birds were bled and their sera tested for SLE and western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) virus antibodies by the hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) test. Eighty-three percent of the birds tested were house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus) (48.7%) and house sparrows (Passer domesticus) (34.6%); 1.1% of these birds were positive for

Interactions between urbanization, malaria infection and avian cloacal microbiome.

Urbanization, a major component of global change, has drastically modified the landscape, and is generally associated with biodiversity loss. Pollutants and low-quality food resources, among other urban stressors, can alter the physiology of urban-dwelling birds, ultimately affecting their interactions with other organisms, including pathogens and symbiotic microorganisms. The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is one of the most common passerine species closely associated with anthropized environments. Here, we explored the association between the level of habitat urbanization, avian malaria i

Comfort Prediction of Office Chair Surface Material Based on the ISSA-LSSVM.

This study serves the purpose of assisting users in selecting a comfortable seat surface material for office chairs and enhancing users' comfort while using office chairs. To address the issue that the selection of traditional seat surface material is too subjective and that the prediction effect is poor, an improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA) optimized least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) method for office chair seat surface material comfort prediction has been proposed. Sparrow Search Algorithm (SSA) was optimized with Sobol sequences, nonlinear inertial weights, and a crisscros

Experimental infection of California birds with western equine encephalomyelitis and St. Louis encephalitis viruses.

A total of 27 bird species from the San Joaquin and Coachella valleys of California were inoculated subcutaneously with sympatric strains of western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) viruses. Overall, 133 of 164 birds inoculated with WEE virus developed a viremia detected by plaque assay; significantly greater than 72 of 163 birds inoculated with SLE virus. Host competence was calculated as the average number of days that each avian species had a viremia > or = 2 log10 plaque-forming units per 0.1 ml, the threshold for infecting susceptible Culex tarsalis Coquille

Photoperiodic information acquired and stored in vivo is retained in vitro by a circadian oscillator, the avian pineal gland.

Endogenous circadian rhythms have been described in a wide range of organisms from prokaryotes to man. Although basic circadian mechanisms at the molecular level are genetically fixed, certain properties of circadian rhythms at the organismic level can be modified by environmental conditions and subsequently retained for some time, even in organisms shielded from 24-hr environmental variations. To investigate the capacity of animals to acquire and store photoperiodic information, we examined activity and melatonin rhythms in house sparrows during synchronization to two different photoperiods a

Host (avian) biting preference of southern California Culex mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

The host preference of a vector mosquito species plays a significant role in determining human and animal risk of infection with mosquito-transmitted pathogens. Host preferences of common southern California Culex species for four bird species, American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), house finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), and mourning dove (Zenaida macroura), were examined by determining the proportion of each mosquito species that successfully engorged on each of the four bird species presented equally within a net trap to wild host-seeking mosquitoes. The neuroethological approach to defense in rabbit.

In this chapter we review the neuroethological approach correlating behavior and dorsal hippocampal activity recorded in rabbits in laboratory conditions or in a semi-natural enclosure and exposed to intra and interspecific confrontations. Behaviors of the same modality, i.e., immobility, and the same motivation, i.e., defense, can be distinguished by a different pattern of hippocampal activity, in terms of the relative ratio of RSA (rhythmic slow activity), and LIA (large amplitude irregular activity), and of RSA frequencies. In addition, the frequency and the duration of RSA episodes represe
