Collaborative Wayfinding: A Critical Review.

Though people can navigate alone, collaborative wayfinding is ubiquitous in human life. Use of GPS devices does not inevitably make it easy to navigate together: conflict in collaborative wayfinding is familiar to most of us, as is failure at it. Yet we know little about how people find their way together. What mechanisms and conditions support effective group dynamics and performance? What difference does a shared history make in grounding communication and decision-making in wayfinding? Only in the last few years have these questions started to be addressed, but recent developments have come

Spatial Learning in Naturalistic Search With Simulated Vision Loss.

PURPOSE: In everyday life, we learn to find relevant objects in complex three-dimensional environments. This spatial learning is even more important under conditions of visual impairment. Yet, little is known about how spatial learning and impaired vision interact to shape search behavior in complex naturalistic settings. Here we assessed how spatial learning is used to mitigate the consequences of acute (simulated) central and peripheral vision loss for navigating an everyday three-dimensional environment. METHODS: Seventy-five participants were assigned to one of three simulated vision cond

Anosmia impairs homing orientation but not foraging behaviour in free-ranging shearwaters.

Shearwaters deprived of their olfactory sense before being displaced to distant sites have impaired homing ability but it is unknown what the role of olfaction is when birds navigate freely without their sense of smell. Furthermore, treatments used to induce anosmia and to disrupt magneto-reception in displacement experiments might influence non-specific factors not directly related to navigation and, as a consequence, the results of displacement experiments can have multiple interpretations. To address this, we GPS-tracked the free-ranging foraging trips of incubating Scopoli's shearwaters wi

Homing pigeon navigation relies on superparamagnetic macrophages under overcast conditions.

Birds use a variety of navigational strategies, including the geomagnetic field, especially when other cues are not available, such as under overcast or nocturnal conditions. Magnetite particles in the beak, cryptochromes in the eye, cellular ion-channel alterations, and changes in the vestibular system have been proposed to explain magnetoreception, but the exact mechanisms remain debated. Here, we used physical, morphological, functional, and genomic assays to identify the presence of superparamagnetic macrophages in the liver. We found that after macrophage depletion, pigeons flying under o

Human frontoparietal cortex represents behaviorally relevant target status based on abstract object features.

Searching for items that are useful given current goals, or "target" recognition, requires observers to flexibly attend to certain object properties at the expense of others. This could involve focusing on the identity of an object while ignoring identity-preserving transformations such as changes in viewpoint or focusing on its current viewpoint while ignoring its identity. To effectively filter out variation due to the irrelevant dimension, performing either type of task is likely to require high-level, abstract search templates. Past work has found target recognition signals in areas of ven

Effects of adolescent experience of food restriction and exercise on spatial learning and open field exploration of female rats.

The hippocampus carries out multiple functions: spatial cognition dorsally (DH) and regulation of emotionality-driven behavior ventrally (VH). Previously, we showed that dendrites of DH and VH pyramidal neurons of female rats are still developing robustly during adolescence and are altered by the experience of food restriction and voluntary exercise on a wheel. We tested whether such anatomical changes during adolescence impact anxiety-like behavior and spatial cognition. Four groups of female rats were evaluated for these behaviors: those with wheel access in its cage from postnatal day (P) 3

Rearing and Head Scanning as Functionally Equivalent Information-Seeking Behaviors.

Spatial memory is crucial for navigation and adapting to changing environmental conditions. Known neurophysiological mechanisms of spatial memory center on the importance of hippocampal activity and its spatial tuning. Yet, the behavioral strategies that support adaptive spatial encoding remain poorly understood. We have shown that dorsal hippocampal activity during rearing is necessary for spatial working memory, highlighting a role of information seeking behaviors for spatial memory encoding. Similarly, spatial tuning by dorsal hippocampal neurons is substantially updated during another info

Spatial learning and memory in the tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria).

A single tortoise (Geochelone carbonaria) was trained in an eight-arm radial maze, with the apparatus and general procedures modeled on those used to demonstrate spatial learning in rats. The tortoise learned to perform reliably above chance, preferentially choosing baited arms, rather than returning to arms previously visited on a trial. Test sessions that examined control by olfactory cues revealed that they did not affect performance. No systematic, stereotyped response patterns were evident. In spite of differences in brain structure, the tortoise showed spatial learning abilities comparab

Enclosure utilisation and activity budgets of disabled Malayan sun bears (Helarctos malayanus).

Captive bears are housed in environments that differ greatly from their natural habitat, restricting their ability to perform normal species-specific behaviours. This may be detrimental to welfare, with disabled individuals at particular risk. The effect of physical disability on behaviour and enclosure utilisation was assessed in 12 adult Malayan sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) using 10min interval scan sampling. Amputees spent less time performing locomotor behaviours than able-bodied bears, used their enclosures less evenly, but did not exhibit obvious stereotypies. This was possibly due to

Olfaction alters spatial memory strategy of scatter-hoarding animals.

Although it has been suggested that olfaction is closely interconnected with hippocampal systems, whether olfaction regulates spatial memory strategy remains never known. Furthermore, no study has examined how olfaction mediates spatial memory established on the external objects, for example, caches made by scatter-hoarding animals. Here, we experimentally induced nondestructive and reversible olfaction loss of a scatter-hoarding animal Leopoldamys edwardsi, to test whether and how olfaction regulates spatial memory to mediate cache recovery and pilferage. Our results showed that the normal L.

[Self-produced locomotion and spatial cognition: a new light from spinal muscular atrophy].

Various studies have shown that occurrence of locomotion in infancy is correlated with the development of visuospatial cognitive competencies, suggesting that locomotor experience might play a central role in spatial development, especially in the realm of manual search for hidden objects. However, recent studies indicate that young children with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a hereditary neuromuscular disease which results in severe motor impairments, excel in some spatial cognitive skills. Indeed, striking cognitive performances are exhibited by young SMA children in some areas such as the

Loft features reveal the functioning of the young pigeon's navigational system.

It is thought that young homing pigeons are able to use information acquired en route for their initial homeward orientation. However, the cues involved and mechanisms utilised are under discussion. Blocking light-dependent route-specific information during the first leg of an outward journey detour, together with analysis of pigeons that were raised under different loft conditions, allowed us to correctly evaluate the functioning of this mechanism and, more generally, the navigational map of birds. Pigeons from the same stock were raised and kept in two different lofts. The birds in the exper

Combined effects of olfactory dysfunction and chronic stress on anxiety- and depressive- like behaviors in mice.

There is a close relationship between olfactory dysfunction and depression, but the underlying mechanism remains unknown. Studies have shown that olfactory deprived animal experience a higher level of stress compared with controls. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether olfactory deprived mice would be more vulnerable to develop cognitive and emotional impairments under chronic stresses. Mice were treated with intranasal zinc sulfate infusion which resulted in a complete but reversible loss of olfactory function, and then they were treated with either chronic restraint stress (C

Detection of early behavioral markers of Huntington's disease in R6/2 mice employing an automated social home cage.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder, for which no known cure or effective treatment exists. To facilitate the search for new potential treatments of HD, an automated system for analyzing the behavior of transgenic HD mice is urgently needed. A recently developed behavior screening system, the IntelliCage, allows automated testing of mouse behavior in the home cage employing individual recognition of animals living in social groups. The present study validates the ability of the IntelliCage system to detect behavioral and cognitive dysfunction in R6/2 m

Adolescents Who Are Overweight or Obese Exhibit Weaker Spatial and Verbal Working Memory Compared with Healthy-Weight Peers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies link obesity to neurophysiological changes, however cognitive outcomes in adolescents who are overweight or obese, especially with their eating behavior, require further documentation. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between body mass index (BMI), eating behavior, and cognitive performance in Mexican adolescents. METHOD: Urban Mexican adolescents completed CANTAB tasks assessing spatial memory (PAL: Paired Associates Learning; SSP: Spatial Span), verbal memory (VRM: Verbal Recognition Memory), and emotional recognition (ERT: Emotion Recognition Task), as we

Catha edulis deteriorates spatial working memory in rats, but spares reference memory.

The effects of Catha edulis, a CNS stimulant, on humans and animals have been studied on various aspects like anorectic effect, self-administration, stereotyped behavior, aggressive behavior, operant task, locomotor sensitization, psychosis etc., but how C. edulis influence spatial learning and memory in rats is not clear. C. edulis contains amphetamine like substances, which enhances spatial learning and memory. So, we hypothesize C. edulis will also influence spatial learning and memory. In the aim to assess this effect of C.edulis, a comparative study is conceded using another CNS stimulant

Towards a new spatial representation of bone remodeling.

Irregular bone remodeling is associated with a number of bone diseases such as osteoporosis and multiple myeloma. Computational and mathematical modeling can aid in therapy and treatment as well as understanding fundamental biology. Different approaches to modeling give insight into different aspects of a phenomena so it is useful to have an arsenal of various computational and mathematical models. Here we develop a mathematical representation of bone remodeling that can effectively describe many aspects of the complicated geometries and spatial behavior observed. There is a sharp interface be

Prospective object search in dogs: mixed evidence for knowledge of What and Where.

We investigated whether two dogs that had been specially trained to retrieve objects by their names were able to integrate information about the identity (What) as well as the location (Where) of those objects so that they could plan their search accordingly. In a first study, two sets of objects were placed in two separate rooms and subjects were asked to retrieve the objects, one after the other. Both dogs remembered the identity of the objects as they reliably retrieved the correct objects. One of the dogs was also able to integrate information about the object's location as he chose the co

Effect of inositol treatment on the behavior of rhesus monkeys: preliminary results.

1. The effects of inositol (20 g/day, oral) on spatial learning and spontaneous home-cage behavior of four Rhesus monkeys, were studied in a crossover design. 2. Results indicate no marked inositol effect on learning, memory, or behavior. There was a suggestion of an effect of chronic inositol in reducing cage-induced repetitive behavior as indicated by increased switching between modes of behavior, and reduction in length of longest behavioral about. Furthermore inositol may increase time spent in environmentally- rather than self-oriented behavior. 3. Previous behavioral studies of inositol
