Block Design Performance in Williams Syndrome: Visuospatial Abilities or Task Approach Skills?

The block design task (BDT) is a visuospatial measure that individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) perform poorly on. However, it is unclear what underlies their impaired performance. This study investigated whether poorer performance is a result of visuospatial difficulties, executive function (EF) difficulties, atypical looking strategies, or a combination of these. Eleven individuals with WS participated alongside mental age (MA)- and chronological age (CA)-matched control groups. Eye movements were recorded while they took the BDT. Dwell times and visits to areas of interest in WS differed

Multimodal Navigation System for Visually Impaired Users Using Environmental Perception and Vision-Language Models.

Visually impaired users face significant challenges in navigating complex indoor environments due to limited spatial awareness and lack of real-time semantic guidance. This paper proposes a multimodal navigation system integrating environmental perception with vision-language models (VLMs). It provides context-aware and explainable guidance without requiring additional infrastructure. The proposed system combines RTAB-Map for localization, YOLO-World for open-vocabulary object detection, and a lightweight language model for semantic reasoning and natural language interaction. To evaluate our s

The interplay between math performances, spatial abilities, and affective factors: The role of task.

UNLABELLED: Many studies have suggested that cognitive and affective abilities (such as math anxiety- MA and math self-efficacy) explain individual differences in math. PURPOSE: The present study explores the interplay between MA, math self-efficacy, spatial anxiety and spatial abilities in explaining individual differences on two complex math tasks. PROCEDURES: Ninety-three college students took part in the experiment and completed 3 emotional questionnaires, in addition to 2 math tasks and a mental rotation task. FINDINGS: The interplay between math performances and cognitive and affectiv

Change Detection in Visual Short-Term Memory: The Relative Impact of Pairwise Switches and Identity Substitutions.

Numerous kinds of visual event challenge our ability to keep track of the objects that populate our visual environment from moment to moment. These include blinks, occlusion, shifting visual attention, and changes to object's visual and spatial properties over time. These visual events may lead to objects falling out of our visual awareness, but can also lead to unnoticed changes, such as undetected object replacements and positional exchanges. Current visual memory models do not predict which visual changes are likely to be the most difficult to detect. We examine the accuracy with which swit

Impact of Bilateral Vestibulopathy on Spatial and Nonspatial Cognition: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is considered an independent risk factor for dementia. Growing evidence in animal and human studies suggest that not only hearing loss but also vestibular loss might result in cognitive deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate the presence of spatial and nonspatial cognitive deficits in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy. As different causes of bilateral vestibulopathy are associated with hearing loss, the objective is to evaluate if these cognitive deficits are due to the vestibular loss of the patients with bilateral vestibulopathy, or to their hearin

Disturbance of real space navigation in moderately advanced but not in early Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Visuospatial skills including spatial navigation are known to be impaired in Huntington's disease. Spatial navigation comprises two navigational frameworks, allocentric and egocentric. Several studies have associated the allocentric navigation with the hippocampus and the egocentric navigation with the striatum. The striatum is predominantly impaired from the early stages of Huntington's disease. OBJECTIVE: To find whether spatial navigation impairment is present in the early stages of Huntington's disease and to test the hypothesis that the egocentric navigation is predominantly

The role of cognitive style in route learning from maps.

Route information learned from maps can be mentally represented in various formats, such as verbal descriptions, spatial layouts, or mental imagery. Across two studies, we examined whether individuals' preferred modes of representing information (visual-verbal cognitive style) are associated with map-based route learning. In Study 1 (N = 70), participants learned three different routes from three separate maps and, following each learning phase, completed a corresponding memory test in either verbal, visual, or spatial format. Verbal, object-visual, and spatial-visual cognitive style dimension

Way-finding strategies of blind persons in urban scale.

The aim of this study was to determine whether urban environments with different prominent sensory inputs have an impact on the way-finding strategies of blind people and to identify these impacts, where applicable. We specifically investigated how blind people use their senses to compensate for the lack of visual information and how the priority of senses changes according to the urban context. The participants of the study consisted of nine congenitally blind individuals and the study took place in two urban settings: a dense urban district, Kemeralti district in İzmir; and an urban park, th

Navigational affordances emerge stably with brief stimulus exposure despite changes in scene content.

Everyday life requires successful navigation often through complex and dynamic environments. The ability to identify efficient and safe routes of egress through scenes relies on perception of the navigational affordances of scenes. Recent behavioral work identified that navigational affordances of indoor urban environments can emerge with as little as 33 to 66 ms of stimulus presentation but only become stable with 132 ms and beyond. Here, we extend this to investigate the temporal emergence of navigational affordances using a more heterogeneous stimulus set that includes both indoor urban and

Single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe flexibly shift representations across spatial and memory tasks.

Investigations into how individual neurons encode behavioral variables of interest have revealed specific representations in single neurons, such as place and object cells, as well as a wide range of cells with conjunctive encodings or mixed selectivity. However, as most experiments examine neural activity within individual tasks, it is currently unclear if and how neural representations change across different task contexts. Within this discussion, the medial temporal lobe is particularly salient, as it is known to be important for multiple behaviors including spatial navigation and memory, h

Execution of new trajectories toward a stable goal without a functional hippocampus.

The hippocampus is a critical component of a mammalian spatial navigation system, with the firing sequences of hippocampal place cells during sleep or immobility constituting a "replay" of an animal's past trajectories. A novel spatial navigation task recently revealed that such "replay" sequences of place fields can also prospectively map onto imminent new paths to a goal that occupies a stable location during each session. It was hypothesized that such "prospective replay" sequences may play a causal role in goal-directed navigation. In the present study, we query this putative causal role i

The Impact of Aging on Spatial Abilities in Deaf Users of a Sign Language.

Research involving the general population of people who use a spoken language to communicate has demonstrated that older adults experience cognitive and physical changes associated with aging. Notwithstanding the differences in the cognitive processes involved in sign and spoken languages, it is possible that aging can also affect cognitive processing in deaf signers. This research aims to explore the impact of aging on spatial abilities among sign language users. Results showed that younger signers were more accurate than older signers on all spatial tasks. Therefore, the age-related impact o

The visual challenges of short-range navigation in teleost fish.

To understand how fish use vision to navigate, we must first understand what they see. This Review explores how visually guided navigation in teleost fishes is shaped by the structure of their visual systems, the cognitive processes that interpret sensory input and the dynamic environments they inhabit. With broad variation in habitat, ecology and visual capabilities, fish provide a powerful system for examining how sensory conditions influence navigation. We focus on short-range navigation and review core strategies - beaconing, pilotage, path integration and spatial mapping - alongside the v

CANav: Cognition-aligned object-goal navigation based on a hierarchical scene graph with personalized knowledge-guided reasoning.

Object-goal navigation (ObjNav) is a fundamental embodied AI task that requires agents to reach target objects using visual information in unfamiliar environments. However, most existing ObjNav methods rely on static priors, making them prone to failures in environments with unreliable contextual cues or human personalized preferences, particularly under semantic distractors such as mirror reflections and atypical layouts shaped by user-specific habits. To address these issues, we propose CANav, a cognition-aligned ObjNav method based on a hierarchical scene graph with personalized knowledge-g

May reducing driving-related phobia recover developmental topographical disorientation? A case report.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) is more common than expected in healthy populations and can cause psychological disorders, leading to feelings of frustration and failure due to poor navigation. Due to the strict relation and the frequent association between DTD and psychological disorders, it is crucial to understand the impact of spatial anxiety and specific phobias, such as driving-related fear (DRF), on one's ability to autonomously navigate in the environment. Here, we report the case of a girl with DTD and DRF who struggled to learn driving routes due to her phobia. Her s

Neurophysiological Evidence for Cognitive Map Formation during Sequence Learning.

Humans deftly parse statistics from sequences. Some theories posit that humans learn these statistics by forming cognitive maps, or underlying representations of the latent space which links items in the sequence. Here, an item in the sequence is a node, and the probability of transitioning between two items is an edge. Sequences can then be generated from walks through the latent space, with different spaces giving rise to different sequence statistics. Individual or group differences in sequence learning can be modeled by changing the time scale over which estimates of transition probabiliti

Shared and specialized coding across posterior cortical areas for dynamic navigation decisions.

Animals adaptively integrate sensation, planning, and action to navigate toward goal locations in ever-changing environments, but the functional organization of cortex supporting these processes remains unclear. We characterized encoding in approximately 90,000 neurons across the mouse posterior cortex during a virtual navigation task with rule switching. The encoding of task and behavioral variables was highly distributed across cortical areas but differed in magnitude, resulting in three spatial gradients for visual cue, spatial position plus dynamics of choice formation, and locomotion, wit

Olfactory navigation in aquatic gastropods.

Gastropod diversity is substantial in marine and freshwater habitats, and many aquatic slugs and snails use olfactory cues to guide their navigation behaviour. Examples include finding prey or avoiding predators based on kairomones, or finding potential mates using pheromones. Here, I review the diversity of navigational behaviours studied across the major aquatic taxa of gastropods. I then synthesize evidence for the different theoretical navigation strategies the animals may use. It is likely that gastropods regularly use either chemotaxis or odour-gated rheotaxis (or both) during olfactory-

Landmark Agnosia: Evaluating the Definition of Landmark-based Navigation Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Landmark agnosia is a rare type of navigation impairment, for which various definitions have been presented. From a clinical as well as theoretical perspective, consensus on the characteristics of landmark agnosia would be valuable. In the current study we review the literature concerning landmark agnosia and present a new case study. Existing literature highlights the importance of examining familiar as well as novel landmark processing and substantial variation in performance patterns of individual patients. METHOD: We performed a case study with patient KS, a 53-year-old male, s

Shared and distinct cognitive processes across multiple virtual navigation tasks.

Although virtual navigation tasks are widely used to investigate human spatial navigation, the processes underlying behavior across tasks remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we administered four virtual navigation tasks assessing spatial learning, path integration, and wayfinding in a single cohort. Participants additionally completed four event segmentation tasks to examine links with episodic memory. Across tasks, spatial cues such as landmarks or the arena center improved performance, with better outcomes when navigating near these cues and when goals were nearby. Despite these s
