Reorganisation of the right occipito-parietal stream for auditory spatial processing in early blind humans. A transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

It is well known that, following an early visual deprivation, the neural network involved in processing auditory spatial information undergoes a profound reorganization. In particular, several studies have demonstrated an extensive activation of occipital brain areas, usually regarded as essentially "visual", when early blind subjects (EB) performed a task that requires spatial processing of sounds. However, little is known about the possible consequences of the activation of occipitals area on the function of the large cortical network known, in sighted subjects, to be involved in the process

A matter of complexity? The role of the dorsal posterior parietal cortex in processing changes in spatial information across time.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is an associative neocortical region that integrates multiple streams of information and is implicated in spatial cognition and decision making. In some cases, however, the PPC is not required for these functions. One possibility is that the PPC is recruited when spatial complexity is high. Yet, few studies of PPC function have explicitly manipulated environmental complexity, complexity of spatial changes, or the temporal structure of spatial tasks. To examine whether task complexity recruits PPC function, we tested rats with neurotoxic damage to the dorsal

The relationship between processing speed and remodeling spatial patterns of intrinsic brain activity in the elderly with different sleep duration.

OBJECTIVE: Brain neuroplasticity in which sleep affects the speed of information processing in the elderly population has not been reported. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the effects of sleep on information processing speed and its central plasticity mechanism in the elderly. METHODS: A total of 50 individuals aged 60 and older were enrolled in this case control study. All subjects were divided into two groups according to the sleep time: short sleep duration (< 360 min) (6 men and 19 women; mean age: 66.96 ± 4.28 years old), and non-short sleep duration (> 360 min) (13 men a

Visuo-spatial processing is linked to cortical glutamate dynamics in Parkinson's disease - a 7-T functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cognitive decline is a frequent and debilitating non-motor symptom for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Metabolic alterations in the occipital cortex during visual processing may serve as a biomarker for cognitive decline in patients with PD. METHODS: Sixteen patients with PD (Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part 3, OFF, 38.69 ± 17.25) and 10 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent 7-T functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) utilizing a visual checkerboard stimulation. Glutamate metabolite levels during rest versus stimulation were

Dissociation in the Effects of Induced Neonatal Hypoxia-Ischemia on Rapid Auditory Processing and Spatial Working Memory in Male Rats.

Infants born prematurely are at risk for cardiovascular events causing hypoxia-ischemia (HI; reduced blood and oxygen to the brain). HI in turn can cause neuropathology, though patterns of damage are sometimes diffuse and often highly variable (with clinical heterogeneity further magnified by rapid development). As a result, though HI injury is associated with long-term behavioral and cognitive impairments in general, pathology indices for specific infants can provide only limited insight into individual prognosis. The current paper addresses this important clinical issue using a rat model tha

Prevalence and spatial distribution of highly processed food in a population-based study and associations with socioeconomic and health factors.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Highly processed food (HPF) intake contributes to negative health outcomes, yet gaps remain in understanding population-level consumption. This study characterized HPF consumption across 14 food categories among Geneva adults and identified related socioeconomic, spatial, and health patterns. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 3600 adults in the Specchio cohort (March 2025). HPF consumption across 14 categories was assessed using the validated short screening-HPF questionnaire. Participants were classified as high/low HPF consumption. Multivariable logistic regression e

Single cell and spatial sequencing define processes by which keratinocytes and fibroblasts amplify inflammatory responses in psoriasis.

The immunopathogenesis of psoriasis, a common chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, is incompletely understood. Here we demonstrate, using a combination of single cell and spatial RNA sequencing, IL-36 dependent amplification of IL-17A and TNF inflammatory responses in the absence of neutrophil proteases, which primarily occur within the supraspinous layer of the psoriatic epidermis. We further show that a subset of SFRP2+ fibroblasts in psoriasis contribute to amplification of the immune network through transition to a pro-inflammatory state. The SFRP2+ fibroblast communication network in

The posterior parietal cortex processes visuo-spatial and extra-retinal information for saccadic remapping: A case study.

Optimally collecting information and controlling behaviour require that we constantly scan our visual environment through eye movements. How the dynamic interaction between short-lived retinal images and extra-retinal signals of eye motion results in our subjective experience of visual stability remains a major issue in Cognitive Neuroscience. The present study aimed to assess and determine the nature of the contribution of the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) to the saccadic remapping mechanisms which contribute to such perceptual visual constancy. Perceptual responses in transsaccadic visual

Different brains process numbers differently: structural bases of individual differences in spatial and nonspatial number representations.

A dominant hypothesis on how the brain processes numerical size proposes a spatial representation of numbers as positions on a "mental number line." An alternative hypothesis considers numbers as elements of a generalized representation of sensorimotor-related magnitude, which is not obligatorily spatial. Here we show that individuals' relative use of spatial and nonspatial representations has a cerebral counterpart in the structural organization of the posterior parietal cortex. Interindividual variability in the linkage between numbers and spatial responses (faster left responses to small nu

Multi-Scale Spatial-Temporal Graph Model for Unsupervised Anomaly Detection in the Wheat Flour Transportation Process.

Wheat flour transportation involves extended transit periods, which present considerable challenges for safety risk oversight. Therefore, it is essential to develop an efficient anomaly detection method to support risk assessment during this stage. However, existing anomaly detection methods often neglect the coupling effects across different time scales and the spatial clustering of hazard factors. To address this limitation, we propose a multi-scale spatial-temporal graph model-based unsupervised anomaly detection framework (MSTUAD), which can simultaneously capture the spatial-temporal corr

Spatial heterogeneity determines the gastrointestinal microbiome signatures and ecological processes that govern bacterial community assembly in sheep.

UNLABELLED: Sheep are one of the globally significant livestock, providing meat, dairy products, and wool for human life, playing an indispensable role in human civilization. Despite significant advancements in microbiome research in recent years, most studies have focused solely on the rumen, lacking a comprehensive study covering the microbiome of different gastrointestinal tract (GIT) regions in sheep. In this study, we collected 338 samples from 10 different regions of the sheep GIT and systematically investigated their microbiome signatures, including community structure, enterotypes, int

Advanced optical imaging reveals preferred spatial orientation of podocyte processes along the axis of glomerular capillaries.

Mammalian kidneys filter enormous volumes of water and small solutes, a filtration driven by the hydrostatic pressure in glomerular capillaries, which is considerably higher than in most other tissues. Interdigitating cellular processes of podocytes form the slits for fluid filtration connected by the membrane-like slit diaphragm cell junction containing a mechanosensitive ion channel complex and allow filtration while counteracting hydrostatic pressure. Several previous publications speculated that podocyte processes may display a preferable orientation on glomerular capillaries instead of a

Styloid Jugular Nutcracker: The Possible Role of the Styloid Process Spatial Orientation-A Preliminary Morphometric Computed Study.

Styloid Jugular Nutcracker (SJN, also known as Eagle Jugular Syndrome EJS) derives from a jugular stenosis caused by an abnormal styloid process, compressing the vessel in its superior portion (J3) against the C1 anterior arch. It could be considered a venous vascular variant of Eagle Syndrome (ES). Main clinical features of this ES variant are headache, pulsatile tinnitus and dizziness, possibly related to venous hypertension and impaired cerebral parenchyma drainage. In our opinion, conceptually, it is not the absolute length of the styloid bone that defines its abnormality, but its spatial

Field abundance and spatial patterns of ear-feeding insect pests in relation to levels of defective kernels in processing sweet corn.

In this study, we investigated the within-field distribution of sweet corn insect pests in relation to adjacent habitats and determined the level and specific causes of defective kernels affecting the quality of the final product at the processing cannery. Sap beetles [primarily Carpophilus lugubris (Murray, 1864) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae)] and stink bugs [primarily Euschistus servus (Say) ((Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)] infested 27.6% and 73.6% of the fields, respectively. Densities of stink bugs were highest along field edges adjacent to wheat, soybean, vegetable crops, and woodlots. Levels of

Differential temporo-spatial pattern of electrical brain activity during the processing of abstract concepts related to mental states and verbal associations.

Refined grounded cognition accounts propose that abstract concepts might be grounded in brain circuits involved in mentalizing. In the present event-related potential (ERP) study, we compared the time course of neural processing in response to semantically predefined abstract mental states and verbal association concepts during a lexical decision task. In addition to scalp ERPs, source estimates of underlying volume brain activity were determined to reveal spatio-temporal clusters of greater electrical brain activity to abstract mental state vs. verbal association concepts, and vice versa. Allocentric and Egocentric Spatial Processing in Middle-Aged Adults at High Risk of Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease: The PREVENT Dementia Study.

Impairments in spatial processing due to hippocampal degeneration have been observed in the years immediately preceding the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. The demonstration of changes in spatial processing in preceding decades would provide a cognitive marker for pre-clinical AD and an outcome measure for early intervention trials. The present study examined allocentric and egocentric spatial processing in relation to future dementia risk in a middle-aged cohort. The CAIDE Dementia Risk Score (DRS) was calculated for 188 persons aged 40 to 59, of whom 94 had a parent with deme

Visuo-spatial functions mediate the association between cortical thickness of fronto-parietal areas and social processing abilities in congenital atypical development.

Different theoretical perspectives emphasize the significance of sensorimotor and visuospatial functions in shaping social perception, including theory of mind (ToM) and affect recognition (AR) abilities. This study aimed to investigate where in the brain cortical thickness (CT) predicts social perception, and which cognitive functions mediate such relationship. To these aims, we used a hierarchical analytical plan: Step 1 identified brain areas' CT that correlate with cognitive measures; Step 2 used stepwise regression to predict social perception outcomes (ToM and AR) from brain areas' CT; S

Functional connectivity fingerprints of the frontal eye field and inferior frontal junction suggest spatial versus nonspatial processing in the prefrontal cortex.

Neuroimaging evidence suggests that the frontal eye field (FEF) and inferior frontal junction (IFJ) govern the encoding of spatial and nonspatial (such as feature- or object-based) representations, respectively, both during visual attention and working memory tasks. However, it is still unclear whether such contrasting functional segregation is also reflected in their underlying functional connectivity patterns. Here, we hypothesized that FEF has predominant functional coupling with spatiotopically organized regions in the dorsal ('where') visual stream whereas IFJ has predominant functional c

The search for correlates of age-related cochlear synaptopathy: Measures of temporal envelope processing and spatial release from speech-on-speech masking.

Older adults often experience difficulties understanding speech in adverse listening conditions. It has been suggested that for listeners with normal and near-normal audiograms, these difficulties may, at least in part, arise from age-related cochlear synaptopathy. The aim of this study was to assess if performance on auditory tasks relying on temporal envelope processing reveal age-related deficits consistent with those expected from cochlear synaptopathy. Listeners aged 20 to 66 years were tested using a series of psychophysical, electrophysiological, and speech-perception measures using sti

Effect of "Spatially Confined" Sepiolite on the Processing and Properties of Natural Rubber/Silica Composites Prepared by Latex Compounding Method.

To address the pronounced self-aggregation of highly loaded silica in the aqueous phase and the substantial filler loss occurring during the flocculation stage of latex compounding, this study introduces disaggregated and activated sepiolite possessing a spatial confinement effect as both a suspension stabilizer and a synergistic reinforcing component. On this basis, a multiscale natural rubber (NR)/silica/sepiolite composite system was constructed via a latex compounding route. Rheological characterization combined with static sedimentation observations revealed that the percolation threshold
