Preterm labor is a common obstetric complication. Clinical evaluation of cervical ripening to predict preterm labor is very inaccurate. We used frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy (FD-NIRS) to non-invasively investigate the changes of the optical properties (i.e., absorption and scattering of light) in the uterine cervix during regular pregnancies. Optical properties of uterine cervices were measured in 13 patients at various time points of regular pregnancies. For each gestational trimester, mean values with 95% confidence intervals were calculated for oxy-, deoxy-, and total hemoglob

Hemimegalencephaly is a rare congenital disease that occurs with intractable epilepsy and is a childhood developmental disorder. A functional hemispherectomy is indicated for the treatment of hemimegalencephaly with intractable epilepsy. We present a case of hemimegalencephaly in a 6-month-old male. After hemispherectomy, his seizures disappeared completely and postoperative neurological examination showed right hemiplegia. His right arm and limb function were recovered gradually by rehabilitation with passive movement. We investigated cortical activation using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether a near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system is useful for evaluation of the placental function in cases of fetal growth restriction (FGR).
METHODS: Subjects included 282 delivered neonates of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) and 44 small for gestational age (SGA) babies. The measurement of the concentration of oxyhemoglobin (HbO(2)) and deoxyhemoglobin (HHb) was conducted using transabdominal NIRS targeting the placenta at around 20 weeks, 30 weeks and after 36 weeks of gestation and calculated tissue oxygen indexes (TOI=HbO(2)/total Hb). We correlated b

BACKGROUND: Neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome have circulatory vulnerability that results in shock and high risk of mortality without intervention. High arterial saturation (SaO(2)) is often used as a proxy for inadequate systemic oxygen delivery and triggers the use of invasive therapies to restore circulatory balance. We hypothesized that preoperative use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) would reduce the need for invasive therapies, including controlled ventilation and inspired gas manipulation.
METHODS: A Human Research Review Board-approved retrospective review of patients

OBJECTIVES: Near-infrared spectroscopy monitors cerebral oxygen saturation. This parameter parallels jugular venous oxygen saturation and reflects the balance between cerebral oxygen supply and demand. Experience with near-infrared spectroscopy in univentricular physiology is limited. This study explores the relationship between cerebral oxygen saturation, jugular venous oxygen saturation, and other variables of cerebral perfusion in a model of univentricular physiology.
METHODS: Univentricular physiology was created in newborn piglets by means of an aortopulmonary shunt, echocardiography-gui

To evaluate selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) for brain protection, the redox state of cytochrome oxidase (Cyt. aa3) in brain tissue were studied in 27 patients with thoracic aortic repair. The redox state of Cyt. aa3 was monitored by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) (OM-110, Shimazu). There were no significant changes in the Cyt. aa3 redox state in 13 (Group I), the oxidation state of Cyt. aa3 decreased then recovered to control levels in 12 (Group II), and the oxidation state decreased but did not recover in 2 patients (Group III). Postoperative cerebral damage was observed in 5 patients;

BACKGROUND: Advances in neuroimaging have significantly enhanced our understanding of brain function, providing critical insights into the diagnosis and management of disorders of consciousness (DoC). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), with its real-time, portable, and noninvasive imaging capabilities, has emerged as a promising tool for evaluating functional brain activity and nonrecovery potential in DoC patients. This review explores the current applications of fNIRS in DoC research, identifies its limitations, and proposes future directions to optimize its clinical utility.

The advancement of novel technologies for the rehabilitation of post-stroke patients represents a significant challenge for a range of interdisciplinary fields. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an optical neuroimaging technique based on recording local hemodynamic changes at the cerebral cortex level. The technology is typically employed in post-stroke patients for diagnostic purposes, including the assessment of neuroplastic processes accompanying therapy, the study of hemispheric asymmetry, and the examination of functional brain networks. However, functional NIRS can also be used for th

Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionized how we treat hearing impairment. Despite major technological and clinical advances, some CI children's language abilities remain below those of their age-matched peers, and there is still considerable individual variability in final outcomes. One important factor underlying this may be individual differences in brain plasticity before and after implantation. However, the neural changes induced in the developing brain by deafness, language deprivation, and the restoration of hearing due to implantation are little understood, in part because the method

BACKGROUND: Retrospective studies suggest that pulse oximetry overestimates saturation in children from races that may be associated with darker skin tone. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) relies on similar optical technology, but less is known about the effect of skin tone on NIRS. This study aimed to quantify the effect of skin tone on NIRS performance.
METHODS: Consecutive patients under 21 yr old undergoing cardiac catheterization were enrolled (N = 110). Skin tone was measured using spectrophotometry. Regional oxygen saturation was recorded from a Medtronic (USA) INVOS 5100C NIRS device

Background: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common mood disorder following stroke and is also the main factor that limits the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with stroke. The prevalence of PSD is ~30%. Since there is no gold standard for the diagnosis and evaluation of PSD, it is important to raise awareness of PSD and to establish methods for its evaluation, early diagnosis, and treatment. In the field of psychiatry, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been used as a diagnostic tool for the measurement of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb). This study aimed to asses

Introduction: We postulate a relationship between a transcutaneous hepatic NIRS measurement and a directly obtained hepatic vein saturation. If true, hepatic NIRS monitoring (in conjunction with the current dual-site cerebral-renal NIRS paradigm) might increase the sensitivity for detecting shock since regional oxygen delivery changes in the splanchnic circulation before the kidney or brain. We explored a reliable technique for hepatic NIRS monitoring as a prelude to rigorously testing this hypothesis. This proof-of-concept study aimed to validate hepatic NIRS monitoring by comparing hepatic N

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study is to determine if near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be used to evaluate wounds and adjacent soft tissues to identify patterns involved in tissue oxygenation and wound healing as well as predict which wounds may or may not heal.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 25 patients with either diabetic foot ulcers or venous leg ulcers were examined retrospectively to determine if NIRS could be used to predict which wounds may or may not close. All patients had either diabetic or venous ulcers and were being actively treated in the clinic. Regardl

The pneumocephalus is commonly encountered after neurosurgical procedures. The collections are usually small with benign behavior, and they respond to a conservative therapy. However, there is a high percentage of cases that may behave like a space-occupying lesion. A high index of suspicion is necessary to make the diagnosis and prompt treatment of these cases. Monitoring Near infra-red spectrometry (NIRS) monitoring could help to complete the diagnosis and treatment in these cases. A venous air embolism is a common complication in neurosurgical procedures that are performed in a sitting posi

Children suffering supracondylar fractures of the humerus are at risk of vascular compromise, which is currently assessed clinically, although other modalities such as angiography, pulse oximetry, Doppler ultrasound and magnetic resonance angiography have been used. We sought to ascertain whether tissue haemoglobin oxygenation (StO2) measurement could distinguish between patients with and without clinical vascular compromise following supracondylar fractures of the humerus. We prospectively observed StO2 using near-infrared spectroscopy in 29 paediatric patients with supracondylar fractures re

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: An early diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma is of high importance for good prognosis. An objective, non-invasive instrument could improve the diagnostic accuracy of melanoma and decrease unnecessary biopsies. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of Near-infrared and skin impedance spectroscopy in combination as a tool to distinguish between malignant and benign skin tumours.
METHODS: Near-infrared and skin impedance spectra were collected in vivo on 50 naevi or suspect melanomas prior to excision. Received data were analysed using multivariate techniques

Near infrared spectroscopy of the thenar eminence (NIRSth) is a noninvasive bedside method for assessing tissue oxygenation. The NIRS probe emits light with several wavelengths in the 700- to 850-nm interval and measures the reflected light mainly from a predefined depth. Complex physical models then allow the measurement of the relative concentrations of oxy and deoxyhemoglobin, and thus tissue saturation (StO2), as well as an approximation of the tissue hemoglobin, given as tissue hemoglobin index. Here we review of current knowledge of the application of NIRSth in anesthesia and intensive ca

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) is increasingly recognized as an important parameter in critically ill (ICU) patients. IAH affects perfusion to all abdominal components including the abdominal wall (AW). Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measures changes in three chromophores including oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2), deoxygenated hemoglobin (Hb), and cytochrome aa3 (Cyt), providing information concerning dysoxia. We sought to examine whether NIRS measurement of the AW was safe, and correlated with intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) in ICU patients.

We have recently developed an optical spectroscopy technique to monitor light scattering changes of the nervous system in vivo. Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy emphasizes the detection of light scattering properties, which are prominent within the wavelength range of 700 to 850 nm wavelength. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that demyelination and degeneration of the sciatic nerves after nerve injury will lead to a change in light scattering properties and be detected by the NIR technique. Left spinal nerve ligations (L4, L4 and L5, L5) were performed in rats. The scatterin
