Sphenoid sinus is a rare site for tumor-induced osteomalacia: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: In this paper, we present a rare case of tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) and a literature review of this rare disease. METHODS: A case of TIO of the isolated sphenoid sinus was reported. Furthermore, the clinical features of TIO in the sphenoid sinus and other sinonasal sinuses were also reviewed and summarized. RESULTS: A 35-year-old man with muscle weakness and lower back pain came to the Department of Neurology. No obvious neurological disease was found; however, magnetic resonance imaging of the extremities accidentally showed a tumor in the axilla. Bone scintigraphy showed

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 3A: sphenoidal sinus.

This article describes the complex anatomy of the sphenoid bone. The development and size of the sphenoidal sinuses are quite variable and complete analysis of the sinus walls requires several views. The essential plain film projections and use of tomography and CT scans are described. Sphenoidal sinus inflammatory disease produces changes similar to those already discussed in the articles in this series on the frontal sinus and the ethmoidal sinus. Illustrations of sphenoidal sinus inflammatory disease are provided.

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 3B: Sphenoidal sinus.

Mucoceles involving the sphenoidal sinus are not as common as those affecting the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. The subtle expansile change produced by a sphenoidal sinus mucocele often requires conventional tomography or computed tomography examination to be detected. Similarly, involvement of surrounding structures by a sphenoidal mucocele may require special study, which this section illustrates. The sphenoidal enlargement and density change produced by fibrous dysplasia may mimic sinus disease. Focal or widespread bone destruction resulting from neoplastic involvement of the sphenoidal si

Spontaneous sphenoid sinus cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningoencephalocele - are they due to patent Sternberg's canal?

Sternberg's canal is a congenital bony defect in the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus. If it persists to adulthood, it may become a source of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak (CSF) and meningoencephalocele. The aim of the study was to describe the authors' experience and review articles related to spontaneous sphenoid sinus CSF leaks and Sternberg's canal. We analysed patients managed surgicallly due to sphenoid sinus CSF leak and performed a PubMed database search. Two female patients with spontaneous CSF leak of sphenoid origin were found. Both patients underwent surgery with the endos

Sphenoid sinus localization of multiple myeloma revealing evolution from benign gammopathy.

BACKGROUND: Plasma-cell neoplasms of the head and neck include extramedullary plasmacytoma and solitary plasmocytoma of bone or may represent a local manifestation of multiple myeloma. Involvement of sphenoid sinus has been rarely reported in multiple myeloma. METHODS: We present the case of a 77-year-old man with a 3-year-history of benign monoclonal IgG-lambda gammopathy who developed left sixth-nerve palsy and malaise. RESULTS: Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging scan disclosed a large soft-tissue mass of the sphenoid sinus with bone destruction. Sphenoid sinus biopsy

[A case report of sphenoidal encephalocele presenting with cerebral spinal fluid rhinorrhea].

Sphenoidal encephalocele is a rare congenital anomaly. We report a case of sphenoidal encephalocele presenting with cerebral spinal fluid rhinorrhea. A 53-years-old man suffered recurrent fever and rhinorrhea. Computed tomography demonstrated a low density area extending from the left middle cranial fossa into the left sphenoidal sinus. Bone defect was identified in the medial surface of the left middle cranial fossa. Magnetic resonance imaging with contrast medium demonstrated peripheral enhancement of the lesion. We diagnosed the lesion as sphenoidal encephalocele. Surgical repair and amputa

Transpalpebral lateral orbital approach for epidermoid cyst of the sphenoid wing.

Bone lesions of the lateral orbit are commonly indicated for surgical resection. While surgeons have a plethora of techniques to choose from, the transpalpebral approach offers a minimally invasive corridor with favourable outcomes. In this report, we describe this approach in further detail for the treatment of an epidermoid cyst arising from the sphenoid wing and lateral orbit in a female in her 50s. This patient underwent a successful transpalpebral lateral orbital approach for their sphenoid wing and orbital rim bone lesion at a tertiary medical centre. The surgical length was 110 min and

Utility of Computed Tomography Angiography in Characterizing Vascular Injury From Sphenoid Fractures.

OBJECTIVES: Sphenoid fractures are associated with significant neurovascular risks, including blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI). While computed tomography angiography (CTA) is commonly used to detect vascular injuries, its routine use in sphenoid fractures remains a debate. This study aimed to evaluate sphenoid fracture patterns associated with positive CTA findings to optimize imaging protocols. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 131 patients with sphenoid fractures from 2011 to 2023 at a tertiary care center. Of these, 88 patients underwent CTA. Fracture patterns were cat

[Multiple myeloma of the sphenoid sinus: a case report].

Plasma cell neoplasms of the head and neck region can be extramedullary plasmacytoma of the bone, solitary plasmacytoma of the bone, and local manifestations of multiple myeloma. A 70-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital with diplopia of four-day history. Magnetic resonance imaging showed soft tissue in the sphenoid sinus. Endoscopic biopsy was taken from the sphenoid sinus, which revealed multiple myeloma. Despite medical therapy for multiple myeloma, the patient died after a year.

Isolated fibrous dysplasia of the sphenoid sinus.

Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon benign bone disorder of unknown etiology in which normal medullary bone is replaced by fibrotic and osseous tissue. Solitary involvement of the sphenoid sinus is unusual. Here, we present the case of a 28-year-old man complaining of occipital and vertical headache. Imaging modalities demonstrated an expansile lesion filling the entire sphenoid sinus. Biopsy specimen was obtained by endoscopic sphenoidotomy. Diagnosis of fibrous dysplasia was made by imaging results and pathologic examination.

A quite rare condition: absence of sphenoidal sinuses.

The absence of sphenoidal sinuses (SS) in an adult is an extremely rare condition. We investigated in agenesis of the sphenoid, maxillary, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses in 20 male adult cadavers. In a 50-year-old man, bilateral absence of the SS was observed. On the macroscopic examination, opening of the SS was not found on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. There were multiple small mucosal grooves between the sphenoidal rostrum and the superior nasal turbinates. The bulging of the sphenoidal rostrum at the choanal level was flat. The body of the sphenoid bone was normal and consisted of a

[Mucocele of the sphenoid sinus].

Sphenoid sinus mucoceles are pseudocystic expansile slow-growing processes that arise within the sphenoid sinus. A dynamic process of bone resorption and erosion results in a pseudo-tumoral development. Clinical features and potential risks are related to mass effect with compression of the optic nerves and intracranial extension of the process. CT and MRI allow diagnosis and distinguish mucoceles from skull base tumors or inflammatory diseases. Endonasal endoscopic approach is adapted to the treatment of sphenoid mucoceles and allows marsupialization of the mucoceles.

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the paranasal sinuses associated with fibrous dysplasia: CT and MR findings.

An aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) in the paranasal sinuses is rare with only four previous cases having been described in the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses. This report describes a case of an ABC involving the sphenoid and ethmoid sinuses as well as the upper nasal fossae. It is currently believed that a preexisting primary bone lesion, such as fibrous dysplasia, initiates an osseous arteriovenous fistula, which creates a secondary reactive lesion of bone, the ABC. These lesions, which are comprised of multiple cysts containing liquid blood and serous fluid, are optimally studied by a combination o

MR, CT, and plain film imaging of the developing skull base in fetal specimens.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The developing fetal skull base has previously been studied via dissection and low-resolution CT. Most of the central skull base develops from endochondral ossification through an intermediary chondrocranium. We traced the development of the normal fetal skull base by using plain radiography, MR imaging, and CT. METHODS: Twenty-nine formalin-fixed fetal specimens ranging from 9 to 24 weeks' gestational age were examined with mammographic plain radiography, CT, and MR imaging. Skull base development and ossification were assessed. RESULTS: The postsphenoid cartilages e
