Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with an increased susceptibility to infections, such as pneumonia, which is the leading cause of death in these patients. This phenomenon is referred to as SCI immune deficiency syndrome (SCI-IDS), and has been shown to be more prevalent after high-level transection in preclinical SCI models. Despite the high prevalence of contusion SCIs, the effects of this etiology have not been studied in the context of SCI-IDS. Compared to transection SCIs, which involve a complete loss of supraspinal input and lead to the disinhibition of spinally-generated activity,

Spinal cord perfusion pressure (SCPP) represents the primary driving force for spinal cord blood flow and oxygen delivery. Optimizing SCPP represents a key actionable strategy for mitigating secondary injury following acute traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). In those scenarios, an enhanced hemodynamic management represents the natural continuation of efforts meant to provide timely decompression of the spinal cord. This article will cover the full spectrum of topics related to SCPP optimization: from guidelines for mean arterial pressure targets in traumatic SCI patients, to

Stem-cell-based neural tissue engineering and spinal cord organoids show promises for spinal cord injury repair. However, the native spinal cord presents cell heterogeneity and a stereotypical spatial structure that makes difficult their recapitulation within an organoid architecture, which requires an assembly encompassing cellular composition, segmental organization and dorsoventral features. Here we engineer a thoracic vertebral segment-specific spinal cord organoid (enTsOrg) model that can precisely match the transplantation site, establish synaptic connections and enhance in vivo neuroele

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in the inability to empty the bladder voluntarily, and neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) negatively impact both the health and quality of life of persons with SCI. Current approaches to treat bladder dysfunction in persons with SCI, including self-catheterisation and anticholinergic medications, are inadequate, and novel approaches are required to restore continence with increased bladder capacity, as well as to provide predictable and efficient on-demand voiding. Improvements in bladder function following SCI have

Despite decades of animal experimentation, human translation with cell grafts, conduits, and other strategies has failed to cure patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). Recent data show that motor deficits due to spinal cord transection in animal models can be reversed by local application of fusogens, such as Polyethylene glycol (PEG). Results proved superior at short term over all other treatments deployed in animal studies, opening the way to human trials. In particular, removal of the injured spinal cord segment followed by PEG fusion of the two ends along with vertebral osteotomy

Seven cases of acute cervical cord injury examined by CT-myelography are reported. Cord swelling was observed in 2 patients who developed complete lesions. Another 5 cases had an incomplete lesions. Spinal cord swelling indicated severe cord damage. External decompression seemed to have little effect on cord swelling. When cord swelling is absent, neurological improvement was expected though the initial neurological state showed severe deficits. A further 4 patients who had an acute cervical cord injury who were treated by myelotomy at the injury site are also reported. Two patients obtained s

BACKGROUND: The Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury II (WISCI II) is a hierarchical scale that measures improvements in walking following spinal cord injury (SCI). The WISCI II has good face validity, concurrent validity, and reliability following acute SCI; however, psychometric properties need to be determined for chronic SCI. Because prior studies have demonstrated a relationship between lower-extremity motor scores (LEMS) and walking, outcome measures for walking should demonstrate a linkage between the underlying impairment (weakness) and walking-convergent validity.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is among the most devastating neurological conditions worldwide, imposing substantial clinical, psychological, and socioeconomic burdens on affected individuals and healthcare services. However, a translational gap persists between preclinical findings and therapeutically relevant human applications, partly involving the limitations of conventional two-dimensional culture systems, which inadequately reproduce the complex three-dimensional structure of the spinal cord; and partly due to the fact that animal models differ from humans phylogenetically and physiologically.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in a significant loss of motor, sensory, and autonomic function, imposing substantial biosocial and economic burdens. Traditional approaches, such as stem cell therapy and immune modulation, have faced translational challenges, whereas neuromodulation and digital brain-spinal cord interfaces combining brain-computer interface (BCI) technology and epidural spinal cord stimulation (ESCS) to create brain-spine interfaces (BSIs) offer promising alternatives by leveraging residual neural pathways to restore physiological function. This review examines recent advance

Spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a significant medical challenge, leading to profound and often debilitating neurological deficits that adversely affect motor, sensory, and autonomic functions. Traditional rehabilitation strategies, while essential in the management of SCI, often exhibit limited efficacy in restoring lost functions, leaving many individuals with permanent disabilities. In this context, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) emerges as a novel and promising therapeutic approach with the potential to enhance neurological recovery by promoting neural plasticity and activating residual

OBJECT: There are no clinically based guidelines to direct the spine surgeon as to the proper timing to undertake decompression after spinal cord injury (SCI) in patients with concomitant stenosis-induced cord compression. The following three factors affect the prognosis: (1) severity of SCI; (2) degree of extrinsic spinal cord compression; and (3) duration of spinal cord compression.
METHODS: To elucidate further the relationship between varying degrees of spinal stenosis and a mild contusion-induced SCI (6.25 g-cm), a rat SCI/stenosis model was developed in which 1.13- and 1.24-mm-thick spa
