Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology1989eng
Part I of this article (J Am Acad Dermatol 1989; 20:537-63) focused on normal sweat gland function. Part II provides a discussion of hyperhidrosis and hypohidrosis. Hyperhidrotic disorders affect the palms and soles and the axillae and are associated with previous spinal cord injuries, peripheral neuropathies, brain lesions, intrathoracic neoplasms, systemic illness, and gustatory sweating. Hypohidrotic disorders include anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, hereditary sensory neuropathy, Holmes-Adie syndrome, and generalized anhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Extradural spinal angiolipomas are extremely rare benign neoplasms made up of mature lipocytes with abnormal blood vessels. Spinal angiolipomas represent only 0.14-1.2% of all spinal axis tumours.
CASE PRESENTATION: A case of thoracic spinal extradural angiolipoma producing acute spinal cord compression in a 35-year old housewife is presented. Patient presented with sudden onset of lower limbs paralysis and urinary incontinence for 1 month after vaginal delivery. Patient was diagnosed as dorsal spine angiolipoma which was treated surgically with excellent outcome.

The common indications of dura mater repair are injuries caused by trauma, neoplasms, surgical complications and congenital spinal dysraphism such as meningomyelocele or encephalocele. Dural grafting is done to recreate the dural barrier and avoid the possible postoperative complications. Autografts derived from periosteum, fascia, muscle and fat. The disadvantages of autografts are their small size and esthetic complaints. To overcome the disadvantages synthetic materials might be used in duroplasty. Here we present a 3-year-old girl who developed muscle weakness in the upper and lower extrem

BACKGROUND: Spinal neoplasms are sparsely documented in juvenile dogs. Case reports and small case series have described nephroblastomas, primitive neuroectodermal tumours, gliomas, certain sarcomas, and osteochondromas, but round cell sarcomas have not previously been documented.
CASE PRESENTATION: This case report describes a 10-week-old female Rottweiler puppy with acute onset of progressive ataxia and pelvic limb lameness. Neurological examination localised a T3-L3 myelopathy and MRI revealed an ovoid, well-marginated mass extending from mid L3 to caudal L4 vertebrae. Post-mortem examinat

BACKGROUND Retro-odontoid pseudotumor is a fibrous or pannus mass behind the odontoid process, mainly caused by atlantoaxial instability, degeneration, or abnormal deposits behind the dens. Most scholars agree immobilization of the upper cervical spine can solve this problem; the mass can absorb spontaneously. However, retro-odontoid pseudotumor cases without atlantoaxial instability are limited, and it remains controversial whether the mass should be removed. CASE REPORT A 67-year-old man had intermittent neck pain for 10 years and numbness and weakness of the extremities for 1 month. Primary

Neurilemmoma commonly occurs from the fourth to sixth decades of life with an incidence of 3 to 10 per 100,000 people, and is rare in adolescence. This case report describes the clinical and radiographic features of 2 rare cases with intraspinal neurilemmoma of the cervical and thoracic spine. A 29-year-old man who experienced middle back pain with prominent right lower limb weakness, and an 11-year-old boy who suffered from sudden onset neck pain with left arm weakness and hand clawing for 2 weeks before admission to our department were included in this case report. Benign tumors that grow in the spinal canal are heterogeneous neoplasms with low incidence; from these, meningiomas and nerve sheath tumors (neurofibromas and schwannomas) account for 60%-70% of all primary spinal tumors. Benign spinal canal tumors provoke nonspecific clinical manifestations, mostly related to the affected level of the spinal cord. These tumors present a challenge for the patient and healthcare professionals, for they are often difficult to diagnose and the high frequency of posttreatment complications. In this review, we describe the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical featu

An 18-mo-old Aberdeen Angus steer was unable to rise without assistance; and, when standing, the steer walked with flexed forelimbs. Due to the poor prognosis, it was euthanized and autopsied. Grossly, the cervical spinal cord was markedly enlarged at C5-C6 by a yellow, soft, well-demarcated nodule that affected ~70% of the parenchyma. Microscopically, the expansive, multinodular, unencapsulated neoplasm affected mostly the white matter and consisted of 2 distinct cell populations. Small, pleomorphic cells with scant cytoplasm predominated; nuclei were positive for oligodendrocyte transcriptio

UNLABELLED: Spinal cord tumors are a rare neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS). The occurrence of metastases is related to poor prognosis. The authors analyzed one series of metastasis cases and their associated mortality.
METHODS: Clinical characteristics were studied in six patients with intramedullary tumors with metastases in a series of 71 surgical cases.
RESULTS: Five patients had ependymomas of which two were WHO grade III. The patient with astrocytoma had a grade II histopathological classification. Two patients required shunts for hydrocephalus. The survival curve showed a h

Here we characterize 6 cases (4 autopsies and 2 biopsies) of histiocytic sarcoma in the CNS of cats. All affected cats had chronic, progressive clinical signs. Three autopsied cats were euthanized because of a poor prognosis, and one died. The clinical outcome for the biopsy cases remains unknown. Tumors occurred in the brain (4 cases), spinal cord (1 case), and brain and spinal cord (1 case). Neoplasms were restricted to the CNS in 3 cases. Reported gross changes in the 4 autopsy cases consisted of neuroparenchymal swelling with or without tissue pallor or gray discoloration (2 cases) and a y

Giant cell tumors are hypervascular tumors that represent approximately 5% of all primary bone neoplasms. Vertebral tumors often require surgery to maintain spinal stability or to relieve spinal cord and nerve root compression. However, surgical resection of hypervascular tumors like giant cell tumors can be hazardous because of the risk of excessive intraoperative hemorrhage. Preoperative embolization can be useful to decrease perioperative blood loss in primary and metastatic vertebral tumors, and preoperative embolization for vertebral tumor surgery is relatively safe. We report a patient w

Intracranial rhabdomyosarcomas are rare neoplasms, and those thought to be primary meningeal tumors are even more rare. Hypomelanosis of Ito is a neurocutaneous disorder believed to involve a defect in cells of neural crest origin. We report the case of a 15-month-old boy with hypomelanosis of Ito who developed a primary meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma. The patient initially presented with hydrocephalus and 2 months later developed neurologic signs localizing to the spinal cord. Radiologic studies revealed widespread leptomeningeal enhancement with compression of the spinal cord at C5-C7. A brain b

We report a case of primary solitary fibrous tumor occurring in the intramedullary thoracic spinal cord in a 47-year-old man. The tumor predominately consisted of spindle cells separated by abundant collagen; a few areas of hemangiopericytomatous morphology were also present. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The tumor was reactive to vimentin and CD34 but was negative for glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), S-100, smooth muscle actin, epithelial membrane antigen, HMB-45, myelin basic protein, and keratin; ultrastructural examination showed fairly u

STUDY DESIGN: This case report shows an intramedullary thoracic spinal cord abscess secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis in a 7-year-old boy with chronic progressive paraparesis and hypesthesia below T10.
OBJECTIVES: The treatment of this patient involved drainage of pus followed by appropriate chemotherapy.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Abscess and tuberculomas of the spinal cord are rare entities. They are indistinguishable from neoplasms. The possibility of tubercular abscess or granuloma should be kept in mind when an intraspinal mass is found, provided that the clinical history is unus

Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH) is an uncommon tumor that usually presents as a subcutaneous or deep dermal nodule affecting the extremities of young people. It is primarily a benign vascular neoplasm with a tendency to recur locally. Reports describing SCH diagnosed in muscles, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and even in the spinal cord occasionally surface in the literature. We report a very rare case of SCH diagnosed in the lung.

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare neoplasms that can result in significant patient morbidity and mortality. Symptom onset is often insidious and not specific; thus, imaging is imperative for accurate diagnosis and localization of these tumors. Radiologists should be familiar with the key MR imaging features of common and unusual intramedullary tumors, in order to identify the most likely diagnosis or at a minimum develop an accurate differential diagnosis as this in turn will guide management.

In this retrospective study, we describe the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical findings in a series of primary central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms in African hedgehogs ( Atelerix albiventris). Twelve CNS neoplasms were found among 762 African hedgehog submissions (1.6%) to a private diagnostic laboratory in an 18-y period. The median age of affected hedgehogs was 3.5 y. No sex predilection was found. Hindlimb paresis, weakness, and ataxia were the most commonly reported clinical signs. Gangliogliomas ( n = 6) and astrocytomas ( n = 5) were the most commonly observed neoplasms; one o

BACKGROUND: Calcified meningiomas involving the spine are rare but can pose significant surgical challenges. We systematically reviewed the literature on calcified spinal meningiomas.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, Web-of-Science, and Scopus databases were searched to include studies reporting clinical data of patients with calcified spinal meningioma. Included articles were analyzed for symptoms, imaging, spine level of the tumor, tumor location relative to the spinal cord, calcification status, treatment regimen, recurrence, progression-free survival, and outcomes.
RESULTS: A total of 35 article

BACKGROUND: Collision tumors involving the co-occurrence of two morphologically and genomically distinct neoplasms in the same anatomical site are exceptionally rare in the central nervous system (CNS).
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a unique case of a CNS collision tumor comprising chronic lymphocytic leukemia and myxopapillary ependymoma in a 77-year-old male with acute neurological decline. Presumed to represent leukemic infiltration, urgent laminectomy was pursued for tissue diagnosis and spinal cord decompression, revealing the unexpected ependymal component.
CONCLUSION: This case highligh

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is rare neoplasm, affecting both immunocompetent and immunodeficient patients. It is usually seen as intracranial tumor, but it can often involve cerebrospinal meninges, eyeballs and spinal cord. Although PCNSL is sensitive both to radiotheraphy and chemotheraphy, it's recurrences are very frequent. Mean survival time does not exceed several months. We described a case of 43 year old patient with diagnosed PCNSL and discussed clinical signs, diagnostics and treatment of the neoplasm. In our case report we emphasized transient remission after trea
