Outcomes in surgical treatment of "idiopathic-like" scoliosis associated with syringomyelia.

Patients with "idiopathic-like" spinal deformities associated with syringomyelia were retrospectively reviewed. Ten patients had surgical stabilization of their curvatures with at least a 2-year follow-up, and an additional five patients were evaluated for deformity pattern with <2 years of follow-up. Paralytic curve patterns, scoliosis associated with spina bifida, congenital scoliosis, or other associated syndromes were discarded. All 10 patients with surgery who were followed for an average of 46 months lost 10 degrees correction above, through, or below the instrumented segments. A total o

Scoliosis and segmentation defects of the vertebrae.

The vertebral column derives from somites, which are transient paired segments of mesoderm that surround the neural tube in the early embryo. Somites are formed by a genetic mechanism that is regulated by cyclical expression of genes in the Notch, Wnt, and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling pathways. These oscillators together with signaling gradients within the presomitic mesoderm help to set somitic boundaries and rostral-caudal polarity that are essential for the precise patterning of the vertebral column. Disruption of this mechanism has been identified as the cause of severe segment

From atlas to sacrum: Morphological and morphometric characterization of the feline vertebral canal using computed tomography.

The vertebral canal plays a critical role in protecting the spinal cord and maintaining biomechanical stability. Although the vertebral canal has been extensively studied in dogs, equivalent analyses in cats are limited. This study provides a comprehensive morphological and morphometric assessment of the feline vertebral canal from atlas (C1) to sacrum (Sc) using computed tomography (CT). In 35 cats, predominantly European Shorthairs, cross-sectional area (CSA) and perimeter (P) were determined at cranial, central, and caudal levels of each vertebra. Vertebral canal circularity (CVC) was calcu

Spinal-Related Musculoskeletal Factors and Functional Abdominal Bloating in Females: A Case Control Study in a Population-Based Prospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Functional abdominal bloating (FAB) is defined as a subjective sensation of increased abdominal pressure and is more common in females. Due to the proximity to the abdominal wall spinal related factors of curvature, abdominal muscle function may be related to FAB. This study aimed to compare spinal-related musculoskeletal factors between females with and without FAB. METHODS: This was a case-control study of 90 females aged 18-60 years categorized as FAB (n = 45, mean age 39.24 ± 7.40 years) and control (n = 45, mean age 38.56 ± 7.45 years) groups. Scoliosis: biomechanics and rationale for manipulative treatment.

This paper discusses methods to biomechanically evaluate scoliosis. From a chiropractic point of view, an understanding of the biomechanics of scoliosis is of paramount importance. By understanding the pathogenesis, the chiropractic physician can apply a rational approach to outline a treatment regimen. Spinal curvatures in the median plane change during growth, and in normal children the thoracic kyphosis reduces in size between the ages of 8 to 14. However, the change occurs at different times for boys and girls. Since scoliosis is a lordotic problem, associating lateral curvatures with gend

Computer-assisted Cobb measurement of scoliosis.

This study was devised to develop a simple computerised method for measuring and quantifying the magnitude of spinal curvatures. A digitally scanned antero-posterior radiographic image was used. The vertebral column was defined as a line that can be subdivided into a number of segments, rather than into the exact number of vertebrae. The technique developed allows an observer to measure the spinal curvature with a high resolution and accuracy. One important advantage of the technique is that the assessor does not need to be skilled or experienced in measurement of a spinal curvature.

Intelligent Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Detection Method Based on Three-Dimensional Measurements.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is a prevalent latent disorder among adolescents. Early detection and screening are crucial for preventing the progression of deformities. Current assessment methods for spinal curvature rely on X-ray imaging to measure the Cobb angle and detect scoliosis. However, radiation exposure limits its use for widespread screening. Existing tools are time-consuming and rely on physician expertise. This study introduces a novel method based on depth information and high-order curvature calculations to assess asymmetries in the human back, aiming for a harmless and

Hip loading asymmetry in Lenke type 1 idiopathic scoliosis: Effect of spinal fusion and sex.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic curvatures are most common in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. The literature highlights an imbalance of hip joint moments in the frontal plane quantified with a symmetry index. Spinal arthrodesis can reduce this symmetry index which then tends towards 0. Furthermore, asymptomatic women present lower hip moment in the frontal plane than asymptomatic men. This difference could influence the symmetry index in the case of patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to show a significant positive effect of spinal arthrodesis on the sy

Children with spinal abnormalities have an increased health burden from upper tract urolithiasis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the epidemiology and health care burden of upper tract urolithiasis in children with spinal abnormalities using a large, national database. Children with spinal dysraphism are predisposed to urolithiasis for many reasons, including immobility, bacteriuria, and urinary stasis. No large epidemiologic studies exist regarding stones in this specific group. Isolated spinal curvature may lead to hypercalciuria from immobility; however, urolithiasis rates are unknown. METHODS: We extracted data from the Pediatric Health Information Systems database over an 8-year period. Hospit

Kickboxers and crossfitters vertebral column curvatures in sagittal plane: Crossfit practice influence in kickboxers body posture.

BACKGROUND: In combat sports, long-term training load can lead to sport-specific functional and body posture adaptations. The most often observed changes are in the shape of the anterior-posterior spinal curvatures. The abnormal inclination of the thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine may lead to an additional overload of the musculoskeletal system and spinal pain or decrease sports performance. Therefore it is crucial to prevent disadvantageous body posture features. AIM: The aim was to examine differences in vertebral column's sagittal curves parameters between kickboxing fighters, kickb

Correlation between cervical lordosis and cervical disc herniation in young patients with neck pain.

Abnormal cervical curvature and cervical disc herniation are closely related to neck pain and should be taken into account before any treatment. However, studies have rarely reported on the correlation between cervical lordosis and cervical disc herniation in patients with neck pain. Therefore, in this study, we collect young neck pain patients with abnormal cervical curvature to evaluate the relationship between cervical lordosis and cervical disc herniation.Three hundred patients below 40 years old with neck pain were enrolled. Relationship of thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis to bone mineral density in women.

UNLABELLED: The relationship between spinal curvature and bone mineral density (BMD) in women was examined. Significant relationships were observed between spinal curvature and BMD in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Excessive spinal curvature may be associated with low bone mass in premenopausal women. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between spinal measurements of thoracic and lumbar curvatures and bone mineral density in pre- and postmenopausal women. METHODS: The data for this study were obtained from the Texas Woman's University Pioneer Project.
