Spinal osteoarthritis is a risk of vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women.

Recent studies have revealed that despite high bone mineral density (BMD), osteoarthritis (OA) is a risk factor for osteoporotic fractures. However, the relationship between spinal OA and vertebral fractures has not yet been fully investigated. This longitudinal analysis used a subset of ongoing cohort study consist with Japanese postmenopausal women. The prevalence of spinal OA was determined using Kellgren-Lawrence grading method. The incidence of vertebral fractures were determined by semiquantitative analysis of spinal X-ray films. The relationship between the presence of spinal OA and inc

Epidemiological characteristics of traumatic spinal fractures among the elderly in China.

The exploration of traumatic spinal fractures (TSFs) within the senior demographic has not been thoroughly scrutinized, particularly with respect to variations across genders, age groups, seasonal periods, and causative factors. This retrospective analysis aimed to dissect differences in the prevalence and characteristics of TSFs among the elderly, factoring in gender, age, seasonal timing, and causation. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the medical and imaging records of 1,415 patients, all aged 60 years or older, who were diagnosed with TSFs from 2013 to 2019. This study categorized

[Translated article] Management of spinal deformities caused by osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

Osteoporosis and fragility play a significant role in the treatment and planning of patients with deformity secondary to osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF). The resulting deformity can present significant challenges for its management, both from a medical and surgical perspective. The need for a specific classification for these deformities, including the potential for the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning in predictive analysis, is emerging as a key point in the coming years. Relevant aspects in preoperative optimisation and management of these patients are addres

[Hybrid stabilization and geriatric complex treatment of type A spinal fractures].

Approximately 200,000 spinal fractures occur each year in Germany. The decimated stability of the vertebra often leads to type A fractures with a substantial influence by osteoporosis. A mobility preserving and gentle treatment has clear advantages compared to conservative treatment. The hybrid stabilization as a combination of minimally invasive dorsal stabilization and vertebral augmentation has become an established method. In the period from July 2014 to June 2015 a total of 205 spinal operations were documented. In the group of very old patients more than 80% were treated for a geriatric

Mortality after lower extremity fractures in men with spinal cord injury.

In the United States, there are over 200,000 men with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) who are at risk for lower limb fractures. The risk of mortality after fractures in SCI is unknown. This was a population-based, cohort study of all male veterans (mean age 54.1; range, 20.3-100.5 years) with a traumatic SCI of at least 2 years' duration enrolled in the Veterans Affairs (VA) Spinal Cord Dysfunction Registry from FY2002 to FY2010 to determine the association between lower extremity fractures and mortality. Mortality for up to 5 years was determined. The lower extremity fracture rate was 2.14 per 10

Spinal loads after osteoporotic vertebral fractures treated by vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are routine treatments for compression fractures of vertebral bodies. A wedge-shaped compression fracture shifts the centre of gravity of the upper body anteriorly and generally, this shift can be compensated in the spine and in the hips. However, it is still unclear how a wedge-shaped compression fracture of a vertebra increases forces in the trunk muscle and the intradiscal pressure in the adjacent discs. A nonlinear finite element model of the lumbar spine was used to estimate the force in the trunk muscle, the intradiscal pressure and the stresses in the endp

[Diagnosis of spinal fractures using optical processing of the roentgenologic image].

X-ray examinations by a traditional method in 694 patients with non-complicated compression fractures in the thoraco-lumbar part of the vertebral column do not always give the exact picture of the character of fractures of the vertebral column. The method of optic processing the roentgen picture was used in 30 patients for more detailed analysis of structural changes in the vertebrae bodies. The method allowed to specify structural changes in the vertebra bodies, including the detection of the fracture plane, abruption of a body portion, detection of an additional contour of the limiting plate

Spinal compression fractures in osteoporotic women: patterns and relationship to hyperkyphosis.

A prospective study of thoracic and lumbar spinal fracture distribution and its relationship to thoracic kyphosis was performed in 87 women with osteoporosis. Anterior wedge fractures were most commonly seen in the midthoracic spine and about the thoracolumbar junction, whereas central compression fractures were most common from the first to the fourth lumbar levels. Solitary wedge fractures did not occur above the seventh thoracic vertebra, suggesting that a cause other than osteoporosis must be suspected in any patient with an isolated high thoracic fracture. Analysis of the spinal radiograp
