BACKGROUND: Brenner tumor is a rare epithelial ovarian neoplasm that accounts for 2-3% of all ovarian neoplasms. Herein, we report the first case of thoracic spinal metastasis of recurrent Brenner tumor without local recurrence.Case Description.A 70-year-old female presented with a feeling of abdominal distension. Computed tomography revealed cystic lesions in her bilateral ovaries. Blood examination revealed high CA-125 [74.9 U/ml]. We excised bilateral ovaries, uterus, and omentum. Borderline Brenner tumor was diagnosed [Ki-67 labeling index: 10 %]. Follow-up abdominal echo and CA-125 examin

Tumors of the central nervous system are common in the pediatric population and constitute the second most prevalent tumor type in children. Within this group, spinal cord tumors are relatively rare and account for 1 to 10% of all pediatric central nervous system tumors. We describe a very rare case of an intradural extramedullary spinal cord tumor with a subcutaneous mass and discuss its clinical presentation, pathogenesis, and treatment. A male infant was delivered normally, with uneventful development. At 16 days post-delivery, his family took him to a pediatrician because of a mass on his

Benign tumors that grow in the spinal canal are heterogeneous neoplasms with low incidence; from these, meningiomas and nerve sheath tumors (neurofibromas and schwannomas) account for 60%-70% of all primary spinal tumors. Benign spinal canal tumors provoke nonspecific clinical manifestations, mostly related to the affected level of the spinal cord. These tumors present a challenge for the patient and healthcare professionals, for they are often difficult to diagnose and the high frequency of posttreatment complications. In this review, we describe the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical featu

OBJECTIVE: Oncological outcomes for many malignant primary spinal tumors and isolated spinal metastases have been shown to correlate with extent of resection. For tumors with dural involvement, some authors have described spinal dural resection at the time of tumor resection in the interest of improving oncological outcomes. The complication profile associated with resection of the spinal dura for oncological purposes, however, and the relative influence of resecting tumor-involved dura on progression-free survival are not well defined. The authors performed a systematic review of the literatu

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare neoplasms but frequently cause significant neurological deficits because of the limited compensatory capacity of the spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice and often allows a reliable differential diagnosis based on characteristic imaging findings.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a practical neuroradiological approach to the diagnosis of intramedullary spinal cord tumors, including recent developments in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Narrative review of the curr

Malignant phyllodes tumours (MPTs) are rare fibroepithelial breast neoplasms. While local recurrence is relatively common, distant metastasis is uncommon. Spinal metastases are exceptionally rare, with only a handful of cases in the literature. This case describes a female in her early 50s with a prior diagnosis of borderline phyllodes tumour status post right mastectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy. Two years post treatment, she presented with progressive lower back and bilateral leg pain, later identified as severe spinal canal compression causing cauda equina syndrome secondary to an L4 verteb

Spinal schwannomas represent benign neoplasms arising from spinal nerve root sheaths, predominantly occurring in the cauda equina region. By reviewing this case and literature, our aim was to highlight the diagnostic and therapeutic considerations in managing such rare and challenging cases in the pediatric population. We present an exceptional pediatric case of a giant thoracolumbosacral schwannoma with multi-root involvement, neuroimaging revealed a 36-cm intradural mass extending from T10 to the coccyx, representing the longest documented spinal schwannoma to date. Taking into account the p

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma (PXA) is an uncommon central nervous system neoplasm with an overall favorable survival prognosis. Metastatic spread of PXA to the spinal cord and the cauda equina is rare and may have a different clinicopathologic course. Treatment and prognostic outcomes, in this context, are not well defined. We discuss a case of a 30-year-old patient with known cerebral PXA presenting with metastatic spinal anaplastic PXA and present a literature analysis of treatment outcomes.

An analysis of the clinical course of the disease in 516 patients with tumors of the spinal cord and vertebral column made it possible to identify 4 types of the disease, namely fulminant, acutely progressive, remittent and continuously progressive. The first two types were predominantly observed in patients with primary and secondary malignant tumors, the latter two types predominantly in patients with benign tumors. The early diagnosis of tumors of the spinal cord and vertebral column is difficult but peridurography may render a substantial assistance in such diagnosis. Using this method neo

Ewing's Sarcomas (ES)/Peripheral neuroectodermal tumour (pPNET) are heterogenous group of rare, highly malignant, undifferentiated primitive round-cell neoplasms of neuroectodermal origin. pPNETs are seldom observed to involve the spine of which Spinal Intradural Extramedullary Extraosseous Primary ES/pPNET are extremely rare. We report a case of a 23-year-old male with complaints of low backache and hip pain radiating to the left inguinal region for four months. Radiology findings were suggestive of a neurogenic tumour. Cytomorphology, histomorphology and immunohistochemistry evaluation were

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Paragangliomas are neoplasms that arise from the autonomic nervous system-associated paraganglia. Most often they are benign tumors. However, infrequently they have been reported to metastasize. Involvement of the spine is rare and usually is intradural at the level of the cauda equina.
OBJECTIVES: The authors report two cases of metastatic paraganglioma to the spine, both of which resulted in myelopathy from extradural spinal cord compression. Also provided is a review of the literature.
CONCLUSIONS: Paragangliomas rarely metastasize to the spine. Management of t

OBJECT: The authors describe the preoperative assessment, intraoperative strategies, and long-term outcomes in 41 consecutive patients who underwent spinal reconstruction after resection of subaxial cervical neoplasms.
METHODS: Thirty-three tumors were metastatic and eight were primary. Preoperative studies included direct laryngoscopy and vertebral artery (VA) balloon occlusion tests in selected patients. Based on the tumor location, approaches included 12 anterior, 13 posterior, and 16 combined. All patients underwent aggressive intralesional resection and spinal reconstruction. In 12 patie

Leptomeningeal dissemination of low-grade Schwann cell neoplasms is an exceptionally rare occurrence and has not been well documented in the literature. We encountered 2 cases of leptomeningeal dissemination of low-grade Schwann cell neoplasms. Patient 1 was a 63-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 and a progressive low-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor developing from a diffuse/plexiform orbital neurofibroma that arose in childhood. The neoplasm demonstrated local and leptomeningeal dissemination intracranially leading to the patient's death. There was partial loss of H3K

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) is hereditary syndrome characterized with benign and malignant neoplasms resulting from dysregulation of hypoxia-sensitive pathway. Fifty-year-old man with VHL underwent multimodal imaging for remaining CNS disease. ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT showed single cerebellar lesion, while ¹⁸F-FDG PET/CT remained negative despite active disease; [⁶⁸Ga]Ga-DPI-4452 CAIX-targeted PET/CT revealed multisystem tumor burden; cerebellar and spinal hemangioblastomas, recurrent and contralateral ccRCC lesions and epididymal involvement. This case demonstrates the ability of CAIX-targeted imagin

To determine the MR criteria that are effective for differentiating intramedullary neoplasms from syringo- or hydromyelia, we reviewed MR scans made on prototype and commercial imagers of 33 patients with surgically confirmed cord abnormalities, including nine intramedullary neoplasms and 20 cysts (syringo- or hydromyelia). Two radiologists who did not know the clinical and radiologic diagnoses were asked to evaluate the scans with respect to cord expansion, distinctness of the disease margin, homogeneity, and signal intensity. These observations were correlated with the proved diagnoses. The

Macroscopic ectopic or heterotopic ganglionic tissue within the cauda equina is a very rare pathological finding and is usually associated with spinal dysraphism. However, it may mimic genuine neoplasms of the cauda equina. The authors describe a 29-year-old woman with a history of back pain, right leg pain, and urinary incontinence in whom imaging demonstrated an enhancing mass located in the cauda equina at the L1-2 interspace. The patient subsequently underwent biopsy and was found to have a focus of ectopic ganglionic tissue that was 1.3 cm in greatest dimension. To the authors' knowledge,

Marginal siderosis is recognized in humans as an uncommon clinicopathologic entity characterized by degeneration of neural tissue at the surface of the brain and spinal cord, in association with the accumulation of hemosiderin, and resulting from chronic subarachnoid hemorrhage. The sources of hemorrhage are various and include neoplasms, malformations, cysts, and vasculopathy. Marginal siderosis of the spinal cord due to a myxopapillary ependymoma was diagnosed in a 19-year-old Dutch Warm Blood horse with clinical signs of myelopathy. There is only one previous report of marginal siderosis in

Twenty-eight patients with tumor of the pineal region underwent magnetic resonance (MR) examination. Gadolinium DTPA was given to 13 patients. Histologic confirmation was obtained in all patients, including 10 germinomas, 4 pineocytomas, 4 pineoblastomas, 5 astrocytomas, 2 teratomas, 1 choriocarcinoma, 1 mixed germ cell tumor, and 1 metastasis from breast carcinoma. Pineal region neoplasms have remarkable heterogeneity in both histopathologic and MR appearances. Gadolinium DTPA enhanced MR increases the specificity of diagnosing pineal region neoplasms. In addition, Gd-DTPA provides better del

Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a common manifestation in beta-thalassemia, but can also occur in several clinical hematologic disorders or neoplasms. It has been reported in almost all sites of the body. Often asymptomatic, it can be manifested by compression of the adjacent organs. Spinal cord compression as a consequence of EMH in the intraspinal epidural space is an extremely rare complication. We report a case of a 34 year old man who was hospitalised for complete paraplegia and spasticity of both lower limbs; spinal cord compression on D4-D8 by EMH was diagnosed by MRI and confirme

A primary intracranial ependymoblastoma presented only with symptoms of spinal cord compression due to metastatic spread of the tumor via the leptomeninges. Such a presentation is very rare among primary neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) and unique among the 12 previously reported ependymoblastomas. The previous cases all arose as primary brain tumors and several were remarkable for extensive leptomeningeal spread of the tumor. These observations and the presentation of our patient suggest that a histological diagnosis of ependymoblastoma of the spinal cord, with or without symptom
