Anesthetized rats were subjected to repetitive electrical stimulation of either the ventral or dorsal root of the spinal nerves between the 11th thoracic and 2nd sacral spinal segments. The response of nerve blood flow (NBF) in the sciatic nerve was examined using laser Doppler flowmetry. For all nerve fibers stimulation was for a 10-30-s period at a supramaximal intensity. (1) Stimulation of the T11-L1 ventral roots produced an increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and a biphasic NBF response was comprised of an initial increase and a subsequent decrease. The initial increase was a passive

Spinal muscular atrophies are rare genetic disorders most often caused by homozygous deletion mutations in SMN1 that lead to progressive neurodegeneration of anterior horn cells. Ventral spinal root atrophy is a consistent pathological finding in post-mortem examinations of patients who suffered from various subtypes of spinal muscular atrophy; however, corresponding radiographic findings have not been previously reported. We present a patient with hypotonia and weakness who was found to have ventral spinal root atrophy in the lumbosacral region on MRI and was subsequently diagnosed with spina

In 1981 we reported about a new surgical procedure for the treatment of spasmodic torticollis (ST). 33 patients, who failed to respond to the available conservative treatment, underwent a bilateral microsurgical lysis (BML) of the spinal accessory nerve roots (SRAN). Anastomoses between SRAN and the dorsal roots of the first and second cervical nerve (DRC 1/DRC 2) were cut. DRC 1 and sometimes DRC 2 were divided bilaterally. Moreover, SRAN was freed of all adhesions and vascular contacts. Up to 60 months after surgery we have excellent results in 5(5), good results in 10(7) and improved sympto

Complete spinal cord injury is a devastating occurrence afflicting millions of people worldwide with no available treatment for functional motor recovery. In this report, we describe a procedure in which we used parts of a device available for chronic pain treatment to provide a neuromodulation of motor nerve roots in a case with complete motor and sensory paraplegia. By using a retrograde trans-foraminal approach to implant electrodes close to L2-S1 motor nerve roots bilaterally, we were able to stimulate those nerves and induce precise movements at the joints of lower extremity in a T5 compl

BACKGROUND: Up to 40% of patients diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) show evidence of redundant nerve roots (RNR) of the cauda equina on their magnetic resonance images (MRI). The etiology of RNR is still unclear. Preoperative evidence of RNR is associated with a worse postsurgical outcome. Consequently, potential predictors of RNR could have a prognostic value. The aim was to test whether patient demographics and MRI-based measurements can predict RNR in LSS patients.
METHODS: In a retrospective database-based cohort study the preoperative data of 300 patients, 150 with (RNR+) and 1

STUDY DESIGN: Behavioral and immunohistochemical analysis in rat models of persistent and transient allodynia.
OBJECTIVES: To examine separate cervical nerve root injuries (compression, transection) for producing behavioral hypersensitivity and investigate spinal neuropeptides to understand relationships to pain symptoms.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Mechanical cervical nerve root injury can be a source of neck pain. Painful lumbar radiculopathy models show that different nerve root ligation intensities produce differential allodynia responses. Spinal neuropeptides can mediate pain responses.

A model for experimental studies of acute, graded compression of the cauda equina in pigs was presented (Olmarker et al. 1991a). Detailed analyses of the neural and vascular anatomy demonstrated a close resemblance to the human cauda equina. There were structural and vascular differences between spinal nerve roots and peripheral nerves that could contribute to differences in compression susceptibility between these two parts of the nervous system. The pressure transmission from the balloon to the nerve roots showed to have a high accuracy. The occlusion-pressures for the arterioles, capillarie

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Histiocytic neoplasms, including Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD), Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), and Rosai-Dorfman-Destombes disease (RDD), have frequent nervous system involvement. The aim of this study was to characterize the neurologic, radiologic, and laboratory features of spinal cord and nerve root involvement in histiocytic neoplasms.
METHODS: We evaluated patients with biopsy-proven ECD, LCH, or RDD seen at a tertiary referral center between January 1996 and December 2024. Patients were included if spinal MRI demonstrated spinal cord or nerve root involv

BACKGROUND: Myxopapillary ependymoma (MPE) is a rare primary neoplasm found in the brain and spinal cord that develops from ependymal cells. This tumor type has a prevalence of around 1 in 1 million persons, constitutes 1%-5% of all spinal tumors, and typically arises from the conus medullaris or cauda equina. Prognosis is generally favorable if treated appropriately with resection and, in the event of subtotal resection, radiation therapy. However, MPEs carry a risk of growing or spreading along the neural axis, so timely diagnosis and treatment are crucial.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present

BACKGROUND: Gadolinium enhancement of spinal nerve roots on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has rarely been reported in spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF). Nerve root enhancement and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pleocytosis can be deceptive and lead to a misdiagnosis of myeloradiculitis. We report a patient who was initially diagnosed with neurosarcoid myeloradiculitis due to spinal nerve root enhancement, mildly inflammatory cerebrospinal fluid, and pulmonary granulomas, who ultimately was found to have an extensive symptomatic SDAVF.

BACKGROUND: The redundant nerve root (RNR) syndrome is a pathological condition in which the cauda equina develops into a severely flexed/tortuous spiral mass above a level of severe lumbar stenosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 70-year-old male presented with bilateral neurogenic claudication attributed to a MRI-documented intradural extramedullary lesion at the L1 level with severe adjacent level/inferior L2/3 stenosis. At surgery, intradural exploration at L1 revealed an edematous cauda equina consistent with the diagnosis of the RNR syndrome.
CONCLUSION: The RNR syndrome should be included among
