Drosophilidae feeding on animals and the inherent mystery of their parasitism.

Insect evolution, from a free to a parasitic lifestyle, took eons under the pressure of a plethora of ecological and environmental drivers in different habitats, resulting in varying degrees of interactions with their hosts. Most Drosophilidae are known to be adapted to feeding on substrates rich in bacteria, yeasts and other microfungi. Some of them, mainly those in the Steganinae subfamily, display a singular behaviour, feeding on animal tissues or secretions. This behaviour may represent an evolving tendency towards parasitism. Indeed, while the predatory attitude is typical for the larval

First report of canine ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Thelazia callipaeda eyeworms are transmitted by the non-biting insect vector Phortica variegata in Europe and infest the conjunctiva(s) of several mammalians, including dogs and humans. Infested hosts might remain asymptomatic or display clinical manifestations characterized by variable degrees of severity. METHODS: From July to November 2011, nine dogs were detected with eyeworms at two veterinary clinics in Chaves and Bragança (North of Portugal). Nematodes collected from dogs were morphologically and molecularly characterized at species level. RESULTS: Nematodes were identifie

Proposed histological progression of the Spirocerca lupi-induced oesophageal lesion in dogs.

This study aims to outline the histological progression of the Spirocerca lupi nodule from infection to neoplastic transformation. Sixty-two spirocercosis-induced nodules, 42 non-neoplastic and 20 neoplastic, were stained with HE. Ten non-overlapping high power fields per nodule were examined and non-neoplastic and neoplastic nodules were compared. Inflammation was scored 0-3 and revealed a score of 1.91+/-0.52 in the non-neoplastic and 0.97+/-0.5 in the neoplastic cases (p<0.01). In most non-neoplastic cases the inflammatory infiltrate was lymphoplasmacytic and in the neoplastic cases neutrop

Gnathostomiasis of the anterior chamber.

Ocular involvement with Gnathostoma spinigerum occurs years after the initial infection that is acquired by ingestion of poorly cooked, pickled seafood or water contaminated with third stage larvae. Here we report a case of gnathostomiasis of the left eye of a 32-year-old lady hailing from Meghalaya, India. Her vision had deteriorated to hand movement. Slit lamp examination revealed a live, actively motile worm in the anterior chamber, which was extracted by supra temporal limbal incision and visual acuity was restored.

Clinical gnathostomiasis: case report and review of the English-language literature.

Human gnathostomiasis is most frequently caused by the nematode Gnathostoma spinigerum. This disease is endemic to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Japan. The clinical presentation is most commonly characterized by localized, intermittent, migratory swellings of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, often in association with localized pain, pruritus, and erythema. Since this worm can migrate to deeper tissues, any organ system may become involved. Characteristically, patients with gnathostomiasis have a moderate to severe elevation of the peripheral eosinophil count, with values not unco

Thelazia callipaeda in free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) from Romania.

Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic spirurid nematode infecting the conjunctival sac of various mammalian hosts, including carnivores and humans. Although initially restricted to Asia, the parasite has expanded across Europe over the past two decades, with reports of infection in domestic and wild hosts as well as humans. In Romania, T. callipaeda has been documented in several wild carnivore species and lagomorphs, but not yet in brown bears (Ursus arctos), despite housing the largest European bear population. Between 2021 and 2025, the eyes of 25 brown bears legally hunted in different regions

Rhinomusca as a possible vector of Habronema in Kenya.

Translocations of rhinoceros in the 1990s provided an opportunity to investigate the vectors of filaria in Nairobi National Park and Solio Ranch in Kenya. These are high-altitude sanctuaries where rhinos have ulcerative sores attributed to the filarial nematode Stephanofilaira dinniki. Rhinomusca dutoiti, the biting fly closely associated with rhino, did not harbour S. dinniki, but often harboured a small and/or a large form of Habronema. Rhinomusca dutoiti from Kenya was nearly identical to R. dutoiti from South Africa based on gross morphology and a 798 base pair sequence from the 3' end of

Non-lethal detection of the invasive American eel parasite Anguillicola crassus.

The invasive species Anguillicola crassus is a nematode that infects the swimbladders of anguillid eels. Heavy, repeated infections cause the swimbladder to become thickened and scarred, which can alter swimbladder gas volume, increase energy demands of buoyancy regulation, and influence normal function. Silver-phase (sexually maturing) eels migrate up to thousands of kilometers to the Sargasso Sea to reproduce, and increased energetic requirements may be detrimental to migration and breeding success. Currently, the best practice to confirm A. crassus infection is to dissect an eel and examine

Epidemiological, morphological, and molecular characterization of thelazia spp. in European bison (bison bonasus) in Poland.

Nematodes of the genus Thelazia (also referred to as eyeworms) pose a growing concern for wild and domestic ruminants. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, species composition, and associated ocular pathology of Thelazia infection in several European bison populations in Poland. The eyes of 223 European bison were examined over five years (2020–2024). Nematodes of the genus Thelazia were identified based on morphometrical and molecular analysis of the cox1 sequences. Epidemiological analysis of Thelazia infection in relation to age, sex, genetic line of European bison, as well as se

Morphological description and molecular characterization of Ancyracanthus electrophori n. sp. (Gnathostomatoidea: Gnathostomatidae): a new nematode parasitic in the electric eel Electrophorus varii (Gymnotiformes: Gymnotidae), from the Brazilian Amazon.

A new species of Ancyracanthus, parasite of the electric eel Electrophorus varii, in the Brazilian Amazon, is described based on morphological and molecular characterization. Ancyracanthus electrophori n. sp. differs from the two congeners namely, Ancyracanthus pinnatifidus and Ancyracanthus schubarti, based on the structure of cephalic appendages, number and arrangement of caudal papillae in males, vulva very close to anus in females, eggs with smoothly mamillated shell, host taxon and geographical origin. Moreover, the new species is the first in the genus to be described with thorny cuticul

Update on the treatment and prevention of ocular thelaziosis (Thelazia callipaeda) in naturally infected dogs from Spain.

This study examines the therapeutic and year-round prophylactic efficacy of different formulations used in dogs in three Spanish areas where canine thelaziosis is endemic. The study was conducted as a Good Clinical Practice, multicentre, randomised field study in privately owned outdoor dogs naturally infected with Thelazia callipaeda. The active pharmaceutical ingredients tested were: an oral formulation of milbemycin oxime 12.5 mg combined with praziquantel 125 mg (A), a subcutaneous sustained-release formulation of moxidectin 10 g (B), a moxidectin 2.5% weight/volume (w/v) spot-on formulati

Case series: periocular habronemiasis in five horses in the Netherlands.

In tropical and subtropical climates, infection of periocular tissue by Habronema larvae is a recognised cause of conjunctivitis or blepharitis. To the authors' knowledge, only a few cases of habronemiasis have been described in Western Europe, and it has not been documented previously in the Netherlands. The objective of this report is to describe the occurrence of five cases of (peri)ocular habronemiasis in the Netherlands, of which four date from the past few years. The diagnosis was based on the history, clinical signs and histopathologic examination of biopsy specimens. A granulomatous co

First report of canine ocular thelaziosis in the Muntenia Region, Romania.

Ocular thelaziosis by Thelazia callipaeda is a vector-borne disease that infects domestic and wild carnivores as well as humans. In this paper, we present two cases of ocular thelaziosis in dogs that had never traveled outside Romania. Both presented with moderate conjunctivitis and ocular discharge. In total, 41 adult nematodes were removed from the conjunctival sacs of both dogs; these were identified via morphology as T. callipaeda. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of canine ocular thelaziosis caused by T. callipaeda from the Muntenia Region of Romania.

Conjunctival habronemiasis in a square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

A captive female square-lipped rhinoceros born in 1993 had been showing intermittent signs of bilateral conjunctivitis and conjunctival proliferation since 1998. Periodic improvement was noted, especially in winter, but overall the condition had deteriorated over the years. Treatment with various topical, intralesional, and systemic antibiotics and glucocorticosteroids was largely ineffective, as were repeated dewormings. No primary cause for these lesions was found in biopsies taken in 2000 and 2006, although a severe infiltrate of numerous eosinophils was observed in the latter. As the condi

Oesophagogastric intussusception associated with spirocercosis in a dog.

An oesophagogastric intussusception was diagnosed in an intact Bull Terrier female aged 2 years and 7 months with a concurrent Spirocerca lupi infection. The dog was presented collapsed with a history of inappetance and lethargy of one day's duration. Anaemia and melaena were present on clinical examination. Thoracic radiographs did not reveal any significant findings. Abdominal ultrasound was suspicious for gastric pathology or a possible foreign body. The final diagnosis of an oesophagogastric intussusception with an S. lupi nodule at the cardia was made on post-mortem. Oesophageal intussusc

Trichospirura aethiopica n. sp. (Nematoda: Rhabdochonidae) from Malacomys longipes (Rodentia: Muridae) in Gabon, first record of the genus in the Ethiopian Realm.

Trichospirura aethiopica n. sp. is described from unidentified tubular structures (pancreatic ducts?) near the stomach of the murid Malacomys longipes Milne-Edwards, 1877 in Gabon. The extremely long and narrow buccal capsule, posterior position of the vulva, unequal spicules and absence of caudal alae readily identified the specimens as belonging to Trichospirura Smith & Chitwood, 1967, but a combination of several characters distinguished them from the described species in this genus. Males of the new species are characterized by the absence of precloacal papillae, the presence of four pairs
