Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia: targeting the source.

Bacteremia due to Staphylococcus aureus is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in India, but studies targeting the source of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia are lacking. S. aureus has a vivid armamentarium consisting of toxins, adhesins, and other virulence factors by virtue of which it can cause varied types of infections, sometimes of a serious nature. This review highlights the possible causes of S. aureus bacteremia, and discusses the necessity of tracing its source and eliminating it with proper antibiotic therapy to avoid recurrences or relapses.

Prioritizing echocardiography in Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.

OBJECTIVES: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe complication in Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia (SAB) and recent guidelines from the BSAC recommend all patients undergo echocardiography. We assessed the use of echocardiography at a major tertiary referral centre and sought to identify those patients most likely to have positive findings. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated all cases of SAB at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust between September 2006 and August 2011. RESULTS: Three-hundred-and-six out of 668 patients with SAB underwent cardiac imaging on average 9.8 ± 1.3 days from

NVC-422 inactivates Staphylococcus aureus toxins.

Bacterial pathogens have specific virulence factors (e.g., toxins) that contribute significantly to the virulence and infectivity of microorganisms within the human hosts. Virulence factors are molecules expressed by pathogens that enable colonization, immunoevasion, and immunosuppression, obtaining nutrients from the host or gaining entry into host cells. They can cause pathogenesis by inhibiting or stimulating certain host functions. For example, in systemic Staphylococcus aureus infections, virulence factors such as toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1), staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA),

Clinical management of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia is one of the most common serious bacterial infections worldwide. In the UK alone, around 12,500 cases each year are reported, with an associated mortality of about 30%, yet the evidence guiding optimum management is poor. To date, fewer than 1500 patients with S aureus bacteraemia have been recruited to 16 controlled trials of antimicrobial therapy. Consequently, clinical practice is driven by the results of observational studies and anecdote. Here, we propose and review ten unanswered clinical questions commonly posed by those managing S aureus bacteraemia.

Revisiting Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections.

Within less than 50 years, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) made a tremendous impact worldwide. It is not limited to medical facilities and healthcare institutions anymore. Indeed since two decades, cases of MRSA infections arising from the community among apparently healthy individuals are increasing. In this paper, I will present a case of community-associated MRSA sepsis followed by a comprehensive review about the history, pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical presentations, diagnostic modalities, therapeutic options, contributing factors, growing cost and other pertinent

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: the superbug.

Over the last decade, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains have emerged as serious pathogens in the nosocomial and community setting. Hospitalization costs associated with MRSA infections are substantially greater than those associated with methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) infections, and MRSA has wider economic effects that involve indirect costs to the patient and to society. In addition, there is some evidence suggesting that MRSA infections increase morbidity and the risk of mortality. Glycopeptides are the backbone antibiotics for the treatment of MRSA infectio

Outcome for invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections.

We report a survey of invasive Staphylococcus aureus (ISA) infections concerning outcome variables such as mortality, recurrence and residual symptoms. A prospective, population-based study of all cases of ISA was conducted in the catchment area of Skaraborg Hospital (population 255,109) in western Sweden during the period from 1st March 2003 to 28th February 2005. One hundred and fifty-seven patients were included. Recurrences were seen in 13 cases (9.3%). Thirty patients (19.1%) died during the first 28 days. Mortality rates for complicated bacteraemia and severe sepsis were 32% and 54%, res

Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia with known sources.

Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), both hospital-acquired and community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) strains, have increased in frequency in the last few years, reaching epidemic dimensions. This review discusses several clinical forms of staphylococcal infection leading to bacteraemia in a high proportion of cases. Staphylococcal (MRSA) bacteraemic pneumonia is predominantly seen in hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia, reaching a frequency of 8.4% of all bacteraemias, 30% of all nosocomial bacteraemias and 68% of all bacteraemias of patients hospitalised

Vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus in Korea.

Recent reports on some methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin have been a major concern in Korea because of the widespread use of vancomycin due to a high prevalence of MRSA in the country. We describe a 45-year-old man with long-standing pelvic abscess due to MRSA. In spite of vancomycin and teicoplanin treatment for a long period of time, the patient died from MRSA sepsis. The blood culture isolate of MRSA exhibited reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (MIC, 8 microg/ml). This is the first report of a vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus cas

Necrotizing fasciitis caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

Two patients with rapidly progressive necrotizing fasciitis of a lower extremity due to Staphylococcus aureus as a single pathogen are described. In both patients the portal of entry was attributed to needle puncture (intra-articular injection and intravenous catheter, respectively), followed by bacteremia. Necrotizing fasciitis occurred in a site remote from the needle puncture, suggesting metastatic infection. One patient developed toxic shock syndrome and the other a sunburn-like rash and erythematous mucosae with strawberry tongue. One patient died, and the other required above-knee amputa

Predictive value of urinalysis parameters for risk stratification of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteriuria.

AIMS: Excluding bacteremia is clinically important in patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteriuria (SABU), yet reliable predictors of concomitant S. aureus bacteremia (SAB) remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to evaluate whether routine urinalysis parameters can predict concomitant SAB in patients with SABU. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 82 patients with SABU. Demographic characteristics, urinalysis findings, inflammatory markers, and blood culture results were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and multivariate logistic regress

Lysine Inhibits Hemolytic Activity of Staphylococcus aureus and Its Application in Food Model Contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus.

Alpha-hemolysin (Hla) is one of the important exotoxins of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and can be used as a target to reduce the virulence of S. aureus. This study explored the inhibitory effect of Lysine (Lys) on Hla and its application in food safety. Lys significantly inhibited the expression of Hla at sub-inhibitory concentrations and directly interacted with Hla to interfere with its oligomerization and thus significantly inhibited its hemolytic activity. Notably, Lys attenuated S. aureus damage to mouse small intestine and Caco-2 cells and delayed mouse mortality. In the food model

Antibacterial effect of S-Porphin sodium photodynamic therapy on Staphylococcus aureus and multiple drug resistance Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) has been proposed as an alternative strategy to inactivate bacteria. This study was designed to investigate the antibacterial effect of a novel photosensitizer S-Porphin sodium (S-PS) on plankton and biofilm cultures of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and its multiple drug resistance strain S. aureus (MDR S. aureus). METHODS: The plate counting method was used to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of S-PS-aPDT. The bacterial viability was detected by SYTO9/PI. The intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was estimated by ele

[Staphylococcus aureus infection in chickens in industrialized poultry units. 1. Manifestations of Staphylococcus aureus infection in chickens].

Staphylococcus aureus infection has become an increasingly grave problem in industrialised poultry farming. This first communication in a series of publications on highly involved studies and experiments describes manifestations of the most common staphylococcal infections in fowl, including synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, dermatitis, endocarditis, septicaemia, wound infection, and ophthalmitis. Reference in greater detail is made to manifestations with more important economic consequences, such as synovitis with arthritis, osteomyelitis, and dermatitis. Their frequency, dependence on
