Occupationally Acquired Polymicrobial Keratitis Caused by Acanthamoeba and Rare Enteric Bacteria Following Gastrointestinal Splash Exposure: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Polymicrobial keratitis is an uncommon but vision-threatening condition, particularly when it involves protozoal and bacterial pathogens. Healthcare workers may be at increased risk due to occupational exposure to hospital-associated microorganisms. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of severe polymicrobial keratitis in a 40-year-old contact lens-wearing nurse who developed acute keratitis following inadvertent ocular exposure to nasogastric secretions while caring for a critically ill child. Contact lens culture and in vivo confocal microscopy identified Acanthamoeba, Enterococc

Significant Difference in Antimicrobial Resistance of Coagulase Negative Periprosthetic Joint Infection in Septic Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty Between Two Major Orthopedic Centers.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is recognized as a major public health threat. It occurs naturally; however, an excessive antibiotic use and misuse of antibiotics accelerate the process. Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are becoming harder to treat as the efficacy of antibiotics is becoming lower. The aim of this study was to compare the resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) to antibiotics identified after revision TKAs for PJI between two major orthopedic centers. METHODS: A review of all revision TKAs, undertaken between 2006 and 2018 in two orthopedic centers, was

Surgical Management of a Pediatric Infratentorial Subdural Empyema as a Complication of Parapharyngeal Abscess.

Infratentorial empyema is a rare medical emergency typically presenting secondary to a middle ear infection. Nonspecific symptoms, limited access to radiological facilities, and imaging artifacts render this pathology prone to misdiagnosis and delayed intervention. An 11-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a high fever, cervicalgia, and a two-week history of frontal headache. Computed tomography revealed parapharyngeal abscess and polysinusitis. Pus drained from the parapharyngeal abscess showed Staphylococcus capitis and Streptococcus intermedius. Treatment with intraveno

Microbiological Screening of Bacterial contamination of Platelet Concentrates units: a single center observational study.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial contamination of donated platelets is a major issue in transfusion medicine. Platelet concentrates (PCs) are highly susceptible to bacterial contamination due to their storage conditions at room temperature, which offers a suitable environment for bacterial proliferation. Therefore, the aim of the study is to determine the prevalence of bacterial contamination in the donated platelets units and to identify the isolated microorganisms in samples collected in blood bank services at King Abdullah Medical City (KAMC) in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Sport and infectious risk: a systematic review of the literature over 20 years.

The development of sports activities promoted as a health factor should not hide the increased risk for diseases, more particularly infections. A review of articles made over the last 20 years was made with a descriptive epidemiological purpose. The most marked risk is skin infection with methicillin-resistant community acquired Staphylococcus aureus (27.4% of the articles), followed by Tinea corporis and capitis (13.7%), and leptospirosis (11.7%). The risk of blood-borne infection seems low, and articles are rare (3.9%). The risk of disease with respiratory transmission (measles, meningococca

Immunoglobulin E antibodies against Staphylococcus aureus cell walls in the sera of patients with hyperimmunoglobulinemia E and recurrent staphylococcal infection.

The specificity of antistaphylococcal antibodies of the IgE class in five patients with hyperimmunoglobulinemia E and recurrent staphylococcal infection has been investigated. Purified cell walls were prepared from various staphylococcal strains, and serum immunoglobulin E binding was measured by using a solid-phase radioimmunoassay. Immunoglobulin E binding occurred only with cell walls from Staphylococcus aureus strains, including walls from a teichoic acid-deficient mutant. Immunoglobulin E did not bind to cell wall preparations from the coagulase-negative species S. capitis, S. sciuri subs

Genomic Map of Escherichia coli and Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Markers in Colorectal Cancer.

Gut microbial single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) offer stable, specific genetic markers for disease diagnosis. Escherichia coli (E. coli), a dominant gut bacterium, is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC), but limited enteric reference genomes hinder SNP annotation in intestinal strains. Metagenomic sequencing profiled gut microbiota in 200 CRC patients and 200 healthy controls. The E. coli strain WDP was fully sequenced via PacBio single-molecule technology for genome assembly and functional annotation. Wilcoxon tests identified differentially abundant microbes, while Lasso regression

Systemic Infection Caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum Following Aortic Valve Transplantation-Employing Combined Molecular Techniques for Accurate Species Identification.

Mycobacterium fortuitum, a nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM), is known for causing opportunistic infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Identification of NTM species requires precise diagnostic techniques. Here, we present a study of a systemic infection by M. fortuitum in an elderly patient, identified through MALDI-TOF MS and confirmed by gene sequencing. An 88-year-old Italian man developed an abscess at his pacemaker site, leading to acute infectious endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus capitis. During hospitalization, he experienced multiple complications, including

Common Skin Conditions in Children: Skin Infections.

Skin infections account for a significant subset of dermatologic conditions of childhood. Common cutaneous viral infections in children include warts, molluscum contagiosum, hand-foot-and-mouth disease, and herpes simplex. Although viral infections are self-limited and often only mildly symptomatic, they can cause anxiety, embarrassment, and health care use. Recognition of their common and atypical presentations is necessary to differentiate them from other skin conditions of similar morphology. Impetigo, cellulitis, and abscess comprise the majority of childhood bacterial skin infections and

Tinea corporis with acute inflammation caused by Trichophyton tonsurans.

A 13-year-old Japanese boy presented with acute skin inflammation on the extremities. He belonged to a judo club of a junior high school in which club tinea capitis and tinea corporis seemed to be prevalent. Vesicles and pustules appeared on his right forearm and right leg. They increased in numbers and formed annular lesions. Pruritic erythema appeared surrounding these lesions. Direct microscopic examination of the lesions detected hyphae, and culture for the fungi yielded yellowish colonies. The result of culture from pustules revealed Staphylococcus aureus. At first, a topical antifungal d

Prevalence and antibiotic resistance of 15 minor staphylococcal species colonizing orthopedic implants.

Several species belonging to Staphylococcus genus (non Sau/ non Sep species) exhibit increasing abilities as opportunistic pathogens in colonisation of periprosthesis tissues. Here we report on antibiotic resistance of 193 strains, belonging to non Sau/ non Sep species, consecutively collected from orthopedic implant infections in a period of about 40 months. The 193 strains (representing 17% of all staphylococci isolated) were analysed for their antibiotic resistance to 16 different drugs. Five species turned out more prevalent, ranging from 1 to 5%: S. hominis (4.2%), S. haemolyticus (3.7%),

Comprehensive analysis of antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation and virulence factors of staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitis.

Bovine mastitis, a prevalent disease, is often attributed to staphylococci species. These microorganisms can express a diverse array of virulence genes and have the capability to form biofilms, establishing a robust defense against antimicrobials and host immune responses. In this study, we analyzed 191 Staphylococcus spp., of which 81 % were identified as Staphylococcus aureus, and 19 % as non-aureus staphylococci (NAS), including species such as S. borealis, S. chromogenes, S. haemolyticus, S. saprophyticus, S. capitis, S. ratti, and S. pasteuri. Our analysis involved determining antimicrobi

Enterotoxin genes in coagulase-negative and coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from bovine milk.

The objective of this study was to isolate and identify the main staphylococcal species causing bovine mastitis in 10 Brazilian dairy herds and study their capability to produce enterotoxins. Herds were selected based on size and use of milking technology, and farms were visited once during the study. All mammary glands of all lactating cows were screened using the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and a strip cup. A single aseptic milk sample (20 mL) was collected from all CMT-positive quarters. Identification of Staphylococcus spp. was performed using conventional microbiology, and PCR was used
