Septic osteomyelitis and polyarthritis with ureaplasma in hypogammaglobulinemia.

We describe a hypogammaglobulinemic woman with a one-year history of destructive septic osteomyelitis and polyarthritis with positive cultures for Ureaplasma urealyticum from joint exudate and blood. The clinical course was complicated by subcutaneous abscesses from which both U. urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis were grown. Multiple routine cultures had been negative, except for sporadic findings of Staphylococcus epidermidis before specific cultures for mycoplasmas were performed. Therapy with beta-lactam antibiotics, clindamycin, rifampicin, fusidic acid and aminoglycosides had been given

Infective Endocarditis Presenting With Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction: A Case Report.

Infectious endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease characterized by infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. IE predominately involves the left-sided valves; however, right-sided valvular IE has increased in incidence with intravenous drug use. Treatment of IE is centered on targeted antibiotic therapy and management of complications, including septic embolization, which can affect all of the major arterial beds. Acute coronary syndrome secondary to septic embolization can be difficult to identify and carries an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Care is further complicated by a

Susceptibility to desferrioxamine: a new test for the identification of Staphylococcus epidermidis.

The ability to identify Staphylococcus epidermidis quickly and accurately has become increasingly important in clinical microbiology. Susceptibility to desferrioxamine, an iron-chelating agent, was investigated as a new test for the identification of S. epidermidis. All strains of S. epidermidis and S. hominis tested were susceptible to a 1000-micrograms disk of desferrioxamine when grown on brain heart infusion agar. All other strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci, S. aureus and micrococci were resistant. As a single test, susceptibility to desferrioxamine was 96.4% efficient in identif

Calcific myonecrosis of the leg: report of three patients presenting with infection.

BACKGROUND: Calcific myonecrosis is a rare late complication of trauma, affecting almost exclusively the lower limb. Its radiologic appearance is characteristic. Superimposed infection usually is a sequela of biopsy. CASE REPORT: We present three patients, one with bilateral involvement, who presented with calcific myonecrosis and spontaneous infection. Three infections were attributable to a single microorganism: Enterobacter cloacae, Staphylococcus hominis, and S. haemolyticus were recovered. Multiple microorganisms were responsible in the other case. Treatment consisted of radical surgical

Development of the preterm infant gut and gastric residuals microbiome.

Prematurity, defined as birth before 37 weeks of gestation, is the leading cause of mortality in children under five, affecting ~11% of live births worldwide (≈15 million annually). Despite advances in neonatal care, preterm infants remain at high risk of complications. In neonatal intensive care units, gastric residuals (GRs) are routinely monitored to guide enteral feeding, yet their microbial composition remains poorly understood. We performed metagenomic sequencing of 199 stool and 69 GR samples from 39 preterm infants during hospitalization to characterize stomach and gut microbiomes. To

Microbiological investigation of Bartholin's gland abscesses and cysts.

Percutaneous aspirates from intact Bartholin's gland cysts (12) and abscesses (34) were examined for bacteria and genital mycoplasmas. Aspirates from 10 of the 12 patients with Bartholin's gland cysts were sterile. Aspirates from the other two cysts contained organisms that are part of the vaginal microbial flora. Of the 34 abscesses, 24 (70.6 per cent) contained bacteria. Eight abscesses contained gram-negative rods in pure culture and four contained gonococci in pure culture. Twelve abscesses contained one or more vaginal organisms including anaerobic gram-negative rods (eight isolates), ana

Staphylococcus saprophyticus as a cause of urinary tract infections.

Our objectives in this study were to elucidate various aspects of the epidemiology of Staphylococcus saprophyticus. This organism was isolated from the midstream urine specimens of 7.5% of 145 college women with frequency and urgency of urination and dysuria, but from only 0.07% of 14,835 urine specimens from adult inpatients at the Victoria General Hospital. It was found to be part of the urethral flora of only 2% of healthy women. Other staphylococci which formed part of the urethral flora of 100 healthy women included S. epidermidis (59 women), S. hominis (15 women), S. haemolyticus (13 wom

Actinomyces Europaeus: A Case Report of a Rare Subcutaneous Infection Following Abdominoplasty and a Review of the Literature.

Actinomyces europaeus is an emerging Gram-positive bacterium associated with skin and soft tissue infections. It exhibits intrinsic resistance to multiple antibiotics, and its fastidious growth and the polymicrobial nature of infections often delay diagnosis and treatment. This report highlights a rare case of A. europaeus infection following elective surgery. A 78-year-old woman presented with asthenia and purulent umbilical discharge two months after abdominoplasty. A CT scan revealed a large supra-fascial fluid collection. She underwent surgical debridement and lavage. Cultures identified A

Characterization of the skin microbiota in bullous pemphigoid patients and controls reveals novel microbial indicators of disease.

INTRODUCTION: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most common autoimmune blistering disease. It predominately afflicts the elderly and is significantly associated with increased mortality. The observation of age-dependent changes in the skin microbiota as well as its involvement in other inflammatory skin disorders suggests that skin microbiota may play a role in the emergence of BP blistering. We hypothesize that changes in microbial diversity associated with BP might occur before the emergence of disease lesions, and thus could represent an early indicator of blistering risk. OBJECTIVES: The pre

A Novel Approach Targeting Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Infections: Rifabutin's Antibacterial Potential.

BACKGROUND: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are opportunistic pathogens that pose a significant chal-lenge in healthcare settings, particularly among patients with indwelling medical devices. Their ability to form biofilms and exhibit resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, including methicillin, limits treatment options. The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant CoNS necessitates alternative therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of rifabutin against clinical isolates of CoNS, including Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus sap

The etiologic diagnosis of infectious discitis is improved by amplification-based DNA analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Blood cultures and cultures of disc material are required to identify and treat bacterial agents responsible for septic spondylodiscitis, but these methods have limited sensitivities. We undertook this study to compare nonculture amplification-based DNA analysis with conventional culture of disc aspirate. METHODS: Nineteen patients with spondylodiscitis, including 11 with a history of spinal surgery, presented with negative blood cultures and underwent percutaneous disc or epidural abscess puncture for bacterial diagnosis. Amplification by polymerase chain reaction was performed on

Virulence factors and biofilm forming ability of Staphyloccoccus species isolated from skeletal lesions of broiler chickens.

Lameness in poultry is a significant issue in modern meat production that adversely affects both animal welfare and economic outcomes due to poor leg health, reduced locomotor function, increased feed conversion ratios, and poor performance. Fast-growing broilers are particularly susceptible to lameness, with Staphylococcus being a major bacterial cause of skeletal infections. The aim of this study was to identify Staphylococcus species isolated from skeletal lesions in broiler chickens and to characterize the factors that facilitate such infections. Bacterial strains were isolated from 25 com

[Investigation of biofilm formation properties of staphylococcus isolates].

Biofilm production is an important virulence factor which allows staphylococci to adhere to medical devices. The principal component of biofilm is a "polysaccharide intercellular adhesin (PIA)" which is composed of a beta-1,6-N-acetylglucosamine polymer synthesized by an enzyme (N-acetylglucosamine transferase) encoded by the ica operon found on the bacterial chromosome. This operon is composed of four genes (A, B, C, and D), and a transposable element IS256. In this study, we aimed to determine the biofilm production characteristics of invasive/non-invasive staphylococcus isolates and differe

Evaluation of the microbiological quality of some natural honeys and determination of their antibacterial activity.

Antibiotic resistance is a major concern for health systems worldwide, due to the irrational use of antibiotics. Honey can be considered an alternative therapy to antibiotics. Our study aims to evaluate the microbiological quality and presumed antibacterial activity of 7 natural honeys of different floral origins. Aerobic bacteria grew in 3 samples of honey: (jujube honey ( Bacillus subtilis ), fig honey ( Staphylococcus hominis , S. epidermidis, and S. pettenkoferi ) and holm oak honey ( Aerococcus viridans )). Only holm oak honey contained a yeast ( Cryptococcus neoformans ), while the other
