[Research progress in mesenchymal stem cell-related therapies in the treatment of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis].

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a kind of organic disease with synovial inflammation, cartilage degeneration and subchondral bone remodeling as the main pathological changes. The current treatment is mainly to relieve symptoms, but cannot completely stop the progression of the disease. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have multi-lineage differentiation potential and have good prospects in the repair therapy of TMJOA. Intra-articular injection of MSC from bone marrow, adipose, umbilical cord, dental pulp, etc. has been shown to be effective in numerous animal studies. The above ex

Childhood spinal muscular atrophy and stem cell research: Is cellular replacement therapy the answer? (Review).

Childhood spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal disorder caused by mutations in the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene. Although SMN is a ubiquitously expressed protein, mutations in SMN specifically cause the targeted deterioration of α-motor neurones of the spinal cord. This results in the progressive wasting of the voluntary muscles of the limbs and trunk. Although there is currently no treatment or cure for SMA, several lines of investigation are underway. These include a) screens for small compounds that modulate disease phenotype, b) gene therapy and c) stem cell therapy. In this r

Multimodal objective assessment of a porcine limbal stem cell deficiency model for corneal therapy research.

Reliable preclinical models that recapitulate human limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) and provide objective outcome measures are essential for advancing corneal cell therapies. We induced LSCD in four porcine eyes by total corneal epithelial debridement, tracked healing with serial anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) (preinjury, 0, 5–11, 17, 23, 28 days), and quantified histological changes via computer-assisted digital pathology. OCT confirmed complete epithelial removal and a reproducible stromal edema peak on days 7–9, followed by incomplete regression by day 28. Histology

[Research progress on umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells combined with CAR-NK cells in tumor immunotherapy].

Chimeric antigen receptor natural killer (CAR-NK) cell therapy has shown broad prospects in the field of tumor immunotherapy, owing to its advantages such as low immunogenicity, "off-the-shelf" preparation and a good safety record. However, in the treatment of solid tumors, it faces core challenges including insufficient in vivo persistence, low homing efficiency, and immunosuppression within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) have unique abilities in immune regulation, paracrine secretion, and remodeling of the TME, providing a new strategy for o

Isolation and characterization of a new SHED cell line as a standard source for stem cell research and clinical translation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) are multi-potent mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) and are inspected a favorable, non-invasive source beneficial to stem cell-mediated regeneration of damaged tissues. Our aim was to establish and characterize a non-immortalized SHED cell line as an accessible resource and novel platform for stem cell research and tissue regeneration studies. METHODS: A Healthy exfoliated deciduous molar was extracted from a 12-year-old girl and shipped to an animal cell culture laboratory. Outgrowing primary cells from explanted

Current Status of Research on Nanomaterials Combined with Mesenchymal Stem Cells for the Treatment of Ischemic Stroke.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a disease with high mortality and disability rates worldwide and is a serious threat to patient health. Owing to the narrow therapeutic window, effective treatments during the recovery period are limited. However, in recent years, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have attracted attention and have shown therapeutic potential in IS treatment because of their abilities to home and secrete multiple bioactive substances and potential for differentiation and substitution. The therapeutic mechanisms of MSCs in IS include the regulatory effects of MSCs on microglia, the dual role

Research hotspots and frotiers of stem cells in stroke: A bibliometric analysis from 2004 to 2022.

Background: Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality and permanent disability worldwide. However, the current stroke treatment has a limited effect. Therefore, a new treatment is urgently needed. Stem cell therapy is a cutting-edge treatment for stroke patients. This study aimed to gain better understanding of global stem cell trends in stroke via a bibliometric analysis. Methods: We used the Web of Science Core Collection to search pertinent articles about stem cells in stroke published between 2004 and 2022. Analysis was conducted using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and the R package "biblio

Progress in research on mesenchymal stem cells and their extracellular vesicles for treating fibrosis in systemic sclerosis.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) refers to an autoimmune disease characterized by immune dysfunction, vascular endothelial damage, and multi-organ fibrosis. Thus far, this disease is incurable, and its high mortality rate is significantly correlated with fibrotic events. Fibrosis has been confirmed as a difficult clinical treatment area that should be urgently treated in clinical medicine. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) exhibit immunomodulatory, pro-angiogenic, and anti-fibrotic functions. MSCs-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have aroused rising interest as a cellular component that retains the fu

Advances in the research of immunomodulatory mechanism of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells on periodontal tissue regeneration.

Periodontal disease is a highly prevalent disease worldwide that seriously affects people's oral health, including gingivitis and periodontitis. Although the current treatment of periodontal disease can achieve good control of inflammation, it is difficult to regenerate the periodontal supporting tissues to achieve a satisfactory therapeutic effect. In recent years, due to the good tissue regeneration ability, the research on Mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) and MSC-derived exosomes has been gradually deepened, especially its ability to interact with the microenvironment of the body in th

Research progress on the mechanism underlying the application of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of male infertility.

Male infertility has become an increasingly prominent health issue worldwide. This review systematically evaluated the therapeutic application of different types of MSCs in various male infertility models. The therapeutic effects of MSCs are attributed to mechanisms such as in vivo and in vitro differentiation into germ cells, improved antioxidant capacity of testicular tissue, inhibited secretion of inflammatory factors and elevated anti-inflammatory level of testicular tissue, prevention of excessive apoptosis of testicular tissue cells, restoration of the normal secretion of sexual hormone

[Clinical translational research and application prospects of mesenchymal stem cells in periodontal tissue regeneration].

Periodontitis is an oral infectious disease that occurs in the tooth supporting tissues, which damages the soft and hard tissues of the periodontium and eventually results in tooth mobility and loss. Traditional clinical treatment can effectively control the periodontal infection and inflammation. However, as the therapeutic effect depending on the local condition of periodontal defect and the systemic factors of patients, it's hard to achieve satisfactory and stable periodontal tissue regeneration for damaged periodontal tissues. Recently, as a promising therapeutic strategy in periodontal re

Telomere Dynamics and Telomerase in the Biology of Hair Follicles and their Stem Cells as a Model for Aging Research.

In this review, we propose that telomere length dynamics play an important but underinvestigated role in the biology of the hair follicle (HF), a prototypic, cyclically remodeled miniorgan that shows an intriguing aging pattern in humans. Whereas the HF pigmentary unit ages quickly, its epithelial stem cell (ESC) component and regenerative capacity are surprisingly aging resistant. Telomerase-deficient mice with short telomeres display an aging phenotype of hair graying and hair loss that is attributed to impaired HF ESC mobilization. Yet, it remains unclear whether the function of telomerase
