BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, image-guided production of three-dimensional (3D) haptic biomodels, or rapid prototyping (RP), has transformed the way surgeons conduct preoperative planning. In contrast to earlier RP techniques such as stereolithography, 3D printing has introduced fast, affordable office-based manufacturing. We introduce the concept of 4D printing for the first time by introducing time as the fourth dimension to 3D printing.
METHODS: The bones of the thumb ray are 3D printed during various movements to demonstrate four-dimensional (4D) printing. Principles and validation st

Tissue engineering is an emerging field within biomedicine, related to developing functional substitutes for damaged tissues or organs. Despite significant advancements, the development of effective engineering tissue constructs remains challenging, particularly when replicating elastic stretchability, which plays a critical role in many tissues. Therefore, the development of tough, elastomeric scaffolds that mimic the complex elasticity of native tissues, such as the myocardium, heart valves, and blood vessels, is of particular interest. This study aims to evaluate a flexible printable materi

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effectiveness of the three-dimensional computer simulations in scaphoid nonunion surgery. Seven consecutive clinical patients with scaphoid nonunion at the middle third comprised the study group. Surface models of the scaphoid were constructed on the computer using computed tomography data of the bilateral wrists in neutral position. The distal and proximal fragments of the nonunion model were matched to the mirror image of the contralateral scaphoid model. The rotation of the distal fragment relative to the proximal fragment was calculated, and red

Additive manufacturing is increasingly explored in microbial biotechnology, offering cost-effective, customizable, and scalable solutions. However, the lack of standardized methods for evaluating 3D-printed materials in microbial cultivation applications limits their broader adoption. This study proposes a reproducible framework to assess 3D-printed materials, integrating printability, autoclavability, mechanical testing (Shore D hardness and 3-point bending), and microbial biocompatibility testing. Five polylactic acid (PLA) filaments and twelve photopolymer resins were evaluated. Two polylac

3D printing has transformed academia and industry by providing rapid prototyping, enhanced durability, and customized manufacturing solutions. It creates complex objects in layer by layer (i.e., additive manufacturing) from computer-aided designs (CAD). Although 3D printing has been widely used for producing machine parts, devices, etc., its application in synthetic chemistry and nanomaterials is still in its early stages. Porphyrins are class of naturally occurring macrocycle that play key roles in biological processes such as photosynthesis, oxygen transport, etc. Additionally, synthetic por

Stereolithography (SLA) is gaining vast popularity in the development of three-dimensional parts with customized materials for tissue engineering applications. Consequently, developing customized materials like bio-composites (bio-polymers and bio-ceramics) is the basic pillar that meets the application requirement. Photo-crosslinkable poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) has outstanding biocompatibility and biophysical properties for tissue engineering. But, because of its poor mechanical properties, its scope is limited to load-bearing applications. This research aims to enhance the mech

Tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds with appropriate Poisson's ratio (PR) are suitable for mimicking the environment of native tissues on which cells could survive and thrive better. Herein, cellular structured scaffolds are made by a new composite poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate/cellulose nanofibril aerogel, with prototypes of the hexagonal, reentrant, and semireentrant models. Scaffolds with different geometry parameters (l, t, α) are designed and simulated by COMSOL to enable precise regulation of their PR. Then, nine groups of scaffolds with different PRs ranging from -0.5 to 0.85 are desig

Finding a non-destructive characterization method for cellular ceramics' compressive strength and fracture behavior has been a challenge for material scientists for years. However, for transparent materials, internal stresses can be determined by the non-destructive photoelastic measurements. We propose a novel approach to correlate the photoelastic stresses of polymer (epoxy resin) prototypes with the mechanical properties of ceramics (alumina). Regular and inverse epoxy honeycombs were 3D-printed via stereolithography with varying structure angles from -35° to 35°, with negative angles formi

A biomimetic "intestinal microvillus" electrochemical cell sensor based on three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting was developed, which can specifically and accurately detect wheat gliadin. Self-assembled flower-like copper oxide nanoparticles (FCONp) and hydrazide-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-CDH) were innovatively synthesized to improve the sensor performance. A conductive biocomposite hydrogel (bioink) was prepared by mixing FCONp and MWCNT-CDH based on GelMA gel. The cluster-shaped microvillus structure of small intestine was accurately printed on the screen printing elect
