Parent-Reported Repetitive Behavior in Toddlers on the Autism Spectrum.

Toddlers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were assessed on the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), which we found to have acceptable internal consistency. Stereotypical subscale scores showed a negligible association with cognitive level, but correlated more strongly with adaptive and social indicators. Relative to earlier reported RBS-R scores for older age groups, toddlers' scores trended toward higher stereotyped behavior and lower ritualistic/sameness behavior. Our findings on associations with developmental indicators align with those of researchers who used more resource-intens

Co-morbid tics and stereotypies: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Tics and stereotypies are childhood-onset repetitive behaviours that can pose significant diagnostic challenges in clinical practice. Both tics and stereotypies are characterised by a complex co-morbidity profile, however little is known about the co-occurrence of these hyperkinetic disorders in the same patient population. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to assess the relationship between tics and stereotypies when these conditions present in co-morbidity. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review of original studies on co-morbid tics and stereotypies, according to the s

Rhythmic rocking stereotypies in frontal lobe seizures: A quantified video study.

OBJECTIVES: Rhythmic, stereotyped movements occur in some epileptic seizures. We aimed to document time-evolving frequencies of antero-posterior rocking occurring during prefrontal seizures, using a quantitative video analysis. METHODS: Six seizures from 3 patients with prefrontal epilepsy yet different sublobar localizations were analyzed using a deep learning-based head-tracking method. RESULTS: Mean rocking frequency varied between patients and seizures (0.37-1.0Hz). Coefficient of variation of frequency was low (≤12%). DISCUSSION: Regularity of body rocking movements suggests a mechanis

Abnormal repetitive behaviours: shared phenomenology and pathophysiology.

BACKGROUND: Self-injurious behaviour (SIB) is a devastating problem observed in individuals with various neurodevelopmental disorders, including specific genetic syndromes as well as idiopathic intellectual and developmental disability. Although an increased prevalence of SIB has been documented in specific genetic mutations, little is known about the neurobiological basis of SIB. This makes vulnerability assessment and pharmacological treatment incredibly challenging. METHOD: Here we review evidence that SIB and other repetitive, invariant behaviours, such as stereotypy, compulsions and tics

Automated Detection of Repetitive Motor Behaviors as an Outcome Measurement in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

Repetitive sensory motor behaviors are a direct target for clinical treatment and a potential treatment endpoint for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. By removing the burden associated with video annotation or direct observation, automated detection of stereotypy would allow for longer term monitoring in ecologic settings. We report automated detection of common stereotypical motor movements using commercially available accelerometers affixed to the body and a generalizable detection algorithm. The method achieved a sensitivity of 80% for body rocking and 93% for han

Motor symptoms of the Rett syndrome: abnormal muscle tone, posture, locomotion and stereotyped movement.

Amongst the motor, mental, cognitive and emotional symptoms of the Rett syndrome (RS) the motor symptoms stand out as the hallmark in analyzing the essential pathophysiology. Summarizing the motor symptoms and searching into the knowledge of relevant basic sciences, this report aims at stressing the pathophysiological basis of RS which we have reported in previous studies. The core motor symptoms of RS consist of two aspects; firstly the unique developmental abnormalities of the discrepancy of crawling and walking and secondly the pathognomonic symptoms which include the abnormal muscle tone,

Deep brain stimulation for Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a movement disorder characterized by repetitive stereotyped motor and phonic movements with varying degrees of psychiatric comorbidity. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a novel therapeutic intervention for patients with refractory Tourette syndrome. Since 1999, more than 100 patients have undergone DBS at various targets within the corticostriatothalamocortical network thought to be implicated in the underlying pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome. Future multicenter clinical trials and the use of a centralized online database to compare the results

Flawed prosthodontic treatment as a triggering factor of orofacial dyskinesia: A case report.

Orofacial dyskinesia (ODk) is an involuntary, repetitive and stereotyped movement disorder of the oro-bucco-lingual muscles, which can be classified as primary (idiopathic) or secondary to medical conditions such as oral peripheral factors, that may act as triggers or aggravators. The present case describes a 70 years female with ODk, non-associated to drug use, without central etiological factors or morbid conditions, but with the presence of a flawed prosthodontic treatment, which complaint from spasms in the masticatory muscles that alters jaw dynamics, and her ability for maintain a relaxe

Striatal Syntaxin 1A Is Associated with Development of Tourette Syndrome in an Iminodipropionitrile-Induced Animal Model.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental movement disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics. In this study, we used a TS rat model induced by 3,3'-iminodipropionitrile (IDPN) and aimed to investigate the expression change of Syntaxin 1A (STX1A). Rats in the control group received intraperitoneal injection of normal saline, and TS rats were injected with IDPN (150 mg/kg/day). After 7 days of treatment, the stereotypic behaviors were assessed. Next, rats were sacrificed; brains were removed for RNA extraction and Western blotting analysis and fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde for

Movement disorder in Down's syndrome: a possible marker of the severity of mental handicap.

This study examined the nature and prevalence of abnormal movements in adults with Down's syndrome and also the clinical correlates of orofacial dyskinesia and the relationship between dyskinesia and the level of functional and intellectual disability. Movement disorder, language age, and disability were assessed in an epidemiologically based sample of 145 individuals with Down's syndrome. Abnormal involuntary movements were common, with > 90% exhibiting dyskinesia, predominantly orofacial. Stereotypes were present in one-third of the sample. There was an association between the severity of dy

[Organic catatonia after apoplexy].

Catatonia is seen in various psychiatric disorders, but also rarely occurs in medical conditions with organic cerebral affection. We present a case of a previously mentally healthy male, who developed catatonia years after a stroke in the right hemisphere. Catatonic symptoms included stupor, mutism, stereotyped movements and repetition of meaningless sounds. The condition responded to benzodiazepine and electroconvulsive therapy. Catatonia should be considered as a differential diagnosis when the described symptoms occur in patients with a known organic cerebral disorder.

Tics and tremors.

Tics are the most common movement disorder of childhood. The single tic, or habit spasm, is benign and self-limited. Complex tic disorders include other features such a multiple tics, vocal tics, and complex stereotyped movements. Tourette syndrome represents the most-severe end of a spectrum of tic disorders. The basic features are multiple tics and vocalizations with a changing repertoire over time. Severity waxes and wanes spontaneously. Treatment with haloperidol is effective but associated with a high incidence of side effects. Some cases undergo remission in late adolescence. There is a

Characterization of an unbalanced translocation causing 3q28qter duplication and 10q26.2qter deletion in a patient with global developmental delay and self-injury.

Chromosomal structural variation can cause severe neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric phenotypes. Here we present a nonverbal female adolescent with severe stereotypic movement disorder with severe problem behavior (e.g., self-injurious behavior, aggression, and disruptive and destructive behaviors), autism spectrum disorder, severe intellectual disability, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and global developmental delay. Previous cytogenetic analysis revealed balanced translocations present in the patient's apparently normal mother. We hypothesized the presence of unbalanced trans

Preliminary effects of parent-implemented behavioural interventions for stereotypy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to replicate and extend previous research on using multicomponent behavioural interventions designed to reduce engagement in stereotypy by examining their effects when implemented by parents over several months. METHODS: We used an alternating treatment design to examine the effects of the parent-implemented interventions on engagement in stereotypy and appropriate behaviour in three children with autism and other developmental disabilities. RESULTS: The parent-implemented multicomponent treatments reduced vocal stereotypy in all three participants and

[Tics and Tourette syndrome in literature, cinema and television].

INTRODUCTION: Different neurological diseases have often been portrayed in literature, cinema and television. Tics and Tourette syndrome, for example, are commonly represented from different perspectives, which are sometimes very realistic but in some cases are used for more dramatic purposes or to make a character look ridiculous. One of the main effects of these inadequate views is to further stigmatise those who suffer these movement disorders. AIMS: To review the way tics and Tourette syndrome have been portrayed in certain literary works, films and television. DEVELOPMENT: Tics are rapi

Childhood Neuro-developmental Disorder (Rett Syndrome): A Case Report.

Rett syndrome is a disorder of early brain development which is clinically characterized by arrested neuro-development. We found one such 5.5 years old girl whose physical and mental development was normal up to 17 months of age, followed by regression. She had lost her already acquired purposeful hand movements, appearance of stereotyped hand movements, along with development of epilepsy. To our knowledge such case is being reported for the first time from Bangladesh. The purpose of this case report is to increase awareness of this syndrome among physicians specially paediatricians, thereby a

Stereotyped movements in a group of autistic children.

The authors studied the stereotyped movements presented by a group of 20 autistic children, evaluating the patient observation protocols according to a psychodynamic model of autism. The stereotyped movements were analysed considering ten different parameters: type, site, morphology, frequency, association, complexity, active sensory channel, trigger event, affect during stereotyped movement, and function. The results indicate that each autistic child possesses highly idiosyncratic "stereotypical behavioural equipment", which includes behaviours ranging from simple, reflex-like actions, to muc

[Gilles de la Tourette-syndrome: treatment of a neuropsychiatric disorder].

The Gilles de la Tourette-Syndrome (GTS) is a tic disorder with both motor and vocal tics. A tic is an involuntary, fast, sudden und stereotyped movement or sound. According to international guidelines the therapy consists of pharmacologic, psychotherapeutic and neurosurgical approaches. Antipsychotics are the most effective pharmacotherapy. Psychotherapeutic approaches play a more subordinated role. Deep brain stimulation is experimentally applied in intractable GTS.
