The effects of novelty and behavioral stereotype on the development of amnesia in mice.

The aim of the present study was to analyze the significance of the interaction between the basic behavioral strategy, the extinction of the novelty of information, and the efficacy of amnesia-inducing influences. Using a combination of training to passive avoidance with holding the animal in the unsafe sector of the apparatus, comparative analysis was performed of the reproduction of a memory trace in aggressive and submissive mice of line C57BL/6J with and without six sessions of familiarization with the apparatus. These experiments showed that preliminary habituation prevented the developme

Environmental enrichment: effects on stereotyped behavior and neurotrophin levels.

The present study evaluated whether environmental enrichment-related effects on the development of stereotyped behavior in deer mice were associated with alterations in neurotrophin levels. Deer mice were reared in enriched or standard cage conditions for 60 days. The mice were then tested in automated photocell detectors and classified as either stereotypic or nonstereotypic. This testing paradigm yielded four behaviorally distinct groups: enriched stereotypic, enriched nonstereotypic, standard cage stereotypic, and standard cage nonstereotypic. The motor cortex, striatum, and hippocampus wer

Persistence of stereotypic behavior: examining the effects of external reinforcers.

Basic research has shown that behavioral persistence is often positively related to rate of reinforcement. This relation, expressed in the metaphor of behavioral momentum, has potentially important implications for clinical application. The current study examined one prediction of the momentum metaphor for automatically reinforced behavior. Participants were 3 children who had been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder and who engaged in stereotypic behavior maintained by automatic reinforcement. Results suggested that stereotypic behavior was more resistant to disruption following period

Stereotypic movement disorder after acquired brain injury.

Stereotypic movement disorder (SMD) consists of repetitive, non-functional motor behaviour that interferes with daily living or causes injury to the person. It is most often described in patients with mental retardation. However, recent evidence indicates that this condition is common among otherwise normal individuals. This case study describes a patient with new-onset SMD occurring after subdural haematoma and brain injury. SMD has rarely been reported after acquired brain injury, and none have documented successful treatment. The current psychiatric literature regarding neurochemistry, neur

Functional analysis of stereotypical ear covering in a child with autism.

We studied stereotypical ear covering in a child with autism. Results of a descriptive analysis were inconclusive but revealed a correlation between ear covering and another child's screaming. An analogue functional analysis showed that ear covering was emitted only when the screaming was present.

[Effect of novelty and behavioral stereotype on development of amnesia in mice].

The research was aimed at analysis of interaction of basic behavioural strategy, extinction of information novelty and efficiency of amnesic influence. It is shown that preliminary habituation to the task apparatus prevented development of amnesia, induced detention of the animal in a dangerous compartment in submissive rather than aggressive mice C57BL/6J. The findings suggest that revealed distinctions in effects of pre-exposure on development of amnesia are essentially predetermined by selectivity of extinction of the information novelty specific to a stereotype of behaviour.

The effects of stereotype activation on behavior: a review of possible mechanisms.

Considerable recent research has examined the effects that activated stereotypes have on behavior. Research on both self-stereotype activation and other-stereotype activation has tended to show that people behave in ways consistent with the stereotype (e.g., walking more slowly if the elderly stereotype is activated). Interestingly, however, the dominant account for the behavioral effects of self-stereotype activation involves a hot motivational factor (i.e., stereotype threat), whereas the dominant account for the behavioral effects of other-stereotype activation focuses on a rather cold cogn

Sensitization of stereotyped behavior to amphetamine is context and response dependent.

The present study was designed to determine whether the environmental context in which amphetamine is administered plays a role in the development of sensitization to the stereotyped behavioral effects of amphetamine in mice. In male CF-1 mice, the dose-response curve for stereotyped behavior elicited by amphetamine was shifted 1.9-fold to the left 48 h after pretreatment with 14 mg/kg amphetamine. Behavioral sensitization only developed in mice that were pretreated in the same or a similar environment as that of the test environment. In addition, when mice were placed in an environment that a

Variability of stereotypic body-rocking in adults with mental retardation.

The variability of stereotypic body-rocking motions of adults with severe and profound mental retardation not on medication was examined through a kinematic analysis. A matched nonretarded group of adults was also examined in the production of preferred rates of body-rocking. The inter- and intra-individual variability of the body-rocking motions was, on average, higher for the individuals with mental retardation, although a few participants showed as low a variability as the least variable participants in the nonretarded group. These findings provide further evidence that the kinematic variab

Acute cocaine effects on stereotype and defense: an ethoexperimental approach.

Cocaine administration to laboratory animals may produce locomotor hyperactivity and stereotypies that include sniffing and rearing, in addition to anxiety-like effects. A time-sampling study of the effects of 3, 10 or 30 mg/kg cocaine (i.p.) over time following injection indicated early enhancement of locomotion and crouching, with the latter most increased in low- and intermediate-dose cocaine groups, with increased rearing and standing during the second hour of the test period. Additional analyses at 30-60 min post-injection suggested qualitative changes in rearing, with high dose animals s

The Stereotyped Behavior Scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation.

The development of the Stereotyped Behavior Scale for adolescents and adults with mental retardation was described. Service provider staff in three states selected 600 clients known for stereotypic behaviors and then used 66 items to rate the frequency of occurrence of these behaviors. Items with test-retest reliability less than .45 and/or interrater agreement less than .30 were deleted. The remaining 30 items were subjected to a principal component analysis with varimax rotation. A single-factor solution emerged, which explained 24.9% of the variance. After eliminating 4 items with low facto

Relative prevalence and relations among stereotyped and similar behaviors.

Relative prevalence and relations among stereotyped and similar behaviors were studied in 246 children and adults with developmental disabilities. For each subject, two staff members who knew the participant at least moderately well filled out a checklist of 54 items that sampled various forms of stereotyped behaviors, abnormal focused affections, compulsions, rigidity, savant skills, and defensiveness. Agreements between raters for individual participants were low to moderate. However, the item prevalence scores for the two groups of observers were stable. Correlations between several items w

Attempting to ameliorate student therapists' negative stereotype of the stutterer.

This paper reports on attempts to change student therapists' negative stereotyping of 'the stutterer'. Awareness of the negative stereotype and knowledge about the possible effects of this on therapy were not effective in changing attitudes. Knowledge of alternative meanings of stuttering, different models of therapy and theories of change, as well as experimenting with personal change, were effective to a limited degree in changing the direction of negative attitudes. Relevant experience of working with people who stutter was also important for some student therapists in beginning to change t

Stereotyped hand clasping: an unusual tardive movement disorder.

We report an 83-year-old woman with vascular parkinsonism who presented with stereotyped rhythmical hand-clasping movements after 18 months exposure to neuroleptics. Although stereotypical rhythmical orolinguomasticatory and limb movements are the most common tardive dyskinesia in the elderly, we feel this woman's hand clasping represents another unusual expression of a tardive movement disorder.

Stereotyped goal-directed manifold dynamics in the insular cortex.

The insular cortex is involved in diverse processes, including bodily homeostasis, emotions, and cognition. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of how it processes information at the level of neuronal populations. We leveraged recent advances in unsupervised machine learning to study insular cortex population activity patterns (i.e., neuronal manifold) in mice performing goal-directed behaviors. We find that the insular cortex activity manifold is remarkably consistent across different animals and under different motivational states. Activity dynamics within the neuronal manifold ar

Gender stereotypes regarding power and niceness in Japanese children.

Belief in gendered social power imbalance (i.e. males are more powerful than females) leads to undesirable gender disparities, but little is known about the developmental origins of this belief, especially in Eastern cultures. We investigated the development onset of this belief by focusing on 4-7-year-old Japanese children while considering another belief (females are nicer than males) for comparison. In the dyadic context tasks, children saw pairs of animated characters depicting powerful-powerless or kind-unkind postures and judged the characters' gender (boy or girl). Results suggested bot

Gender stereotypes about intellectual ability in Japanese children.

Japan has a large gender gap; thus, this study examined whether Japanese 4- to 7-year-old children exhibit a "brilliance = males" stereotype and whether parental attitudes toward gender roles were related to children's stereotypes. We also explored whether the children exhibited such stereotypes in response to various stimuli. We showed children photos (Study 1) and stick figures (Study 2) of men, women, boys, and girls, asking them to attribute traits (smart or nice) to each. Study 1 revealed overwhelming in-group positivity in girls, whereas the results for boys were rather mixed. In Study 2
