Management of a floating sternum after repair of pectus excavatum.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to examine the authors' experience with patients who have floating sternum after correction of pectus excavatum via the classical Ravitch procedure. A floating sternum is defined as a sternum in which the only attachment to the chest wall is its superior (cranial) border, and in which the body is secured only by the manubrium and whatever lateral and inferior fibrous bands are present. Typically, a floating sternum is caused by either extensive resection of the costal cartilages and perichondrium during correction of pectus excavatum or failure of proper regr

[The hemangioma-sternum bifidum malformation syndrome. Report of a patient].

We present a male patient with a facial haemangioma extending from the lower left lid to the malar region and the upper left lip. The patient also presents a 1 cm round cutaneous notch on the upper third of the sternum. There are not other physical anomalies. The characteristics of the clinical picture suggest the diagnosis of sternal cleft-haemangiomas malformative spectrum (OMIM 140850).

The development of the fetal sternum: a cross-sectional sonographic study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between gestational age and sonographic appearance of the various sternal components and establish growth during human gestation. DESIGN: A prospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: The study was performed on 252 consecutive normal singleton pregnancies from 19 weeks of gestation until term, using transabdominal high-resolution ultrasound techniques. The sternal length, as well as the number of ossification centers at each gestational age, were recorded. RESULTS: The first occasion at which a fetal human sternum could be visualized with two to three o

Increased kyphosis by a combination of fractures of the sternum and thoracic spine.

A 67-year-old patient suffered a fall and sustained injuries to the thorax, combined with fractures of the ribs, sternum and thoracic spine. Her pre-existing kyphosis (caused by osteoporotic vertebral collapse) increased in severity. There was a clear relationship between a sternal fracture, deterioration of thoracic kyphosis and a fracture of the thoracic spine.

Flail chest injury in a patient with surgical absence of the sternum.

Although pulmonary disability is usually minimal following total sternectomy, the potential for remote complications exists. We present a case of severe respiratory failure resulting from simple rib fractures occurring two years after sternectomy for sternal osteomyelitis. Respiratory failure resulted from flail chest due to the combination of acute rib fracture and the lack of anterior fixation of the thoracic cage.

[Surgical treatment of pectus excavatum by "turn over" of the sternum].

Operations were performed on 20 children for Pectus excavatum in five years. 'Turn over' of the sternum was chosen as surgical approach. About five years have passed from those operations, and results still are better than those obtained from earlier methods based on stabilisation of the sternum.

Comparison of Transcutaneous Bilirubin Measurements at the Forehead and Sternum in Neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Early detection of hyperbilirubinemia is critical in newborns. Transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) devices offer a non-invasive alternative to total serum bilirubin (TSB) measurements for screening newborn jaundice. This study aimed to compare TcB measurements taken at the forehead and sternum in neonates and to determine which site more accurately reflects TSB. METHOD: We conducted a prospective observational study of neonates at risk for hyperbilirubinemia. RESULTS: TcB measurements at the sternum were significantly higher than those from the forehead (mean difference: 1.05 mg/dL,

Congenital Absence of Sternum: A Surgical Technique for Successful Outcome.

Congenital absence of sternum is a rare malformation of the anterior chest wall that needs surgical correction to avoid life-threatening complications as a consequence of such defect. It results from either partial or complete failure of fusion of mesenchymal strip during in utero organogenesis. The absence of sternum entails the risk of trauma to the mediastinal structures and other life-threatening complications. This defect is evaluated by a thorough clinical examination and computed tomography imaging of the thoracic cage to plan the surgical procedure. Early repair of the defect when the

Anthropometry of the sternum: An autopsy-based study for sex determination.

Sex determination is one of the key components for establishing the individual's identity in forensic anthropology casework. It is a known fact that anthropometric assessment can have population-specific variations. The present autopsy study was conducted on the sterna of 102 cadavers (52 males and 50 females) of age more than 25 years at a tertiary care centre in Central India. Anthropometric measurements included the length of the manubrium (M), mesosternum (B) and combined length of manubrium and mesosternum (CL). Applicability of Hyrtl's law, Ashley's rule and the sternal index were also a

A case report of surgical repair of cleft sternum in a child.

BACKGROUND: Sternal cleft is a rare congenital chest wall defect, occurring in only 1 in 100,000 live births, and very few cases have been described in the literature. Surgery is indicated to protect the heart and major vessels. This study provides a clinical case presentation and literature review of sternal cleft. METHODS: This is a review of a case presenting with chest wall defects. The patient underwent a primary cleft closure at Children's Hospital No. 2. All perioperative data were collected and presented. CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 3-year-old girl was admitted to Children's Hospita

Isolated primary cold abscess of the sternum: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal tuberculosis forms 10-25% of extrapulmonary tuberculosis which mainly involves the spine or weight-bearing joints. Tuberculous involvement of the sternum is a rare clinical entity even in countries where tuberculosis has high prevalence. Primary tuberculous sternal osteomyelitis accounts for approximately 0.3% of all types of tubercular osteomyelitis and the probable source appears to be extension from paratracheal or hilar lymph nodes. Despite tuberculosis being a common disease in endemic countries and worldwide, a thorough literature search of the PubMed database

The cleft sternum: a possible role for pliable prosthetic reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Faced with our intraoperative inability to primarily close a very wide isolated cleft sternum of a pediatric patient without causing cardiovascular decompensation, we describe our use of a synthetic material for partial approximation allowing muscular coverage. METHOD: We report an infant who was born with an isolated large complete sternal cleft where a trial of primary surgical repair had to be abandoned because of cardiovascular compromise. A similar difficulty was encountered in approximating the origins of both pectoralis major muscle flaps at the midline. Thus, a pliable syn

Morphogenesis of the manubrium of sternum in human embryos: a new concept.

To revisit many theories on fetal development of the manubrium of the sternum, we examined 25 mid-term fetuses at 6-9 weeks of gestation. The initial developmental stage of the manubrium was characterized by a distinct interclavicular mesenchyme that was continuous with the developing clavicles. Because parts of the clavicle in which endochondral ossification occurs originate from the neural crest, the interclavicular mesenchyme seems to be of the same origin. The sternal bands, possibly of the lateral plate origin, were restricted at the anterior ends of the ribs in the paired thoracic walls.

The role of sternum in the etiopathogenesis of Scheuermann disease of the thoracic spine.

STUDY DESIGN: A clinical cohort study of sternum clinical measurements was performed in 10,057 students, during a school screening program for Scheuermann disease. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the length of sternum is correlated with Scheuermann disease pathogenesis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Many theories have been proposed for the etiology of Scheuermann disease, but the true cause remains unclear. Probably mechanical factors play a role in the development of the deformity. The reported success of brace treatment leads to the support to this theory. METHODS: There were 5048 boys and
