Structural and Histomorphological Evaluation of the Stifle Joint Capsule in Canine Congenital Patellar Luxation and Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture.

Congenital patellar luxation (PL) and cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) are among the most prevalent hereditary musculoskeletal disorders in dogs. Despite their frequency, the microstructural alterations in the stifle joint capsule associated with these conditions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize histomorphological changes in the joint capsule of dogs affected by PL and/or CCLR. Capsule samples were collected from dogs undergoing corrective surgery for PL or CCLR, while control tissue was obtained from dogs with unrelated orthopedic conditions. Histological eva

Histopathological evaluation of canine stifle joint synovial membrane collected at the time of repair of cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

Synovial membranes from 54 dogs were collected at the time of surgery to stabilize the stifle joint following rupture of the cranial cruciate ligament. Histological evaluation revealed lymphoplasmacytic synovitis with the formation of distinct, nodular aggregates in 36 synovial membranes. The remainder had evidence of chronic synovitis with variable numbers of diffuse, mononuclear cells. The presence of a potentially immune-mediated synovitis in the majority of cases suggests the need for further study.

Quantitative evaluation of the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of the dog patellar tendon in response to neuromuscular blockade at different stifle angles.

The patellar tendon (PT) is crucial for maintaining stability and facilitating movement in the stifle joint. Elastography has been recognized as a prominent method for evaluating PT properties in humans and dogs. The utilization of oscillation methods in canine studies remains limited despite their extensive documentation in human studies. Our study represents the first effort to quantitatively assess and compare the effects of muscle relaxant on the biomechanical and viscoelastic characteristics of the PT at varying stifle angles in living dogs. Five healthy female beagles were used in this s

Effect of a single intra-articular injection of bupivacaine on synovial fluid prostaglandin E2 concentrations in normal canine stifles.

OBJECTIVE: To identify if synovial fluid prostaglandin E2 increases in response to a single intra-articular dose of bupivacaine in the normal canine stifle. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in synovial fluid prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) concentrations between treatment groups or over time within bupivacaine or saline groups. Samples requiring ≥ 3 arthrocentesis attempts had significantly higher PGE2 concentrations compared to samples requiring 1 or 2 attempts. Following correction for number of arthrocentesis attempts, PGE2 concentrations were significantly higher than baseline at 24

Ex vivo biomechanical evaluation of extracapsular stabilization with quasi-isometric points in canine cranial cruciate ligament-deficient stifles.

BACKGROUND: Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease is one of the most common causes of lameness in dogs. The extracapsular stabilization (ECS) utilizing bone anchors and monofilament nylon leader was an alternative treatment for CCL-deficient (CCLD) dogs. However, the biomechanical response of the canine stifle to such a surgical repair strategy in conjunction with the use of recently reported quasi-isometric anchoring points remains unclear. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the mobility and stability of CCL-intact, CCLD, and CCLD stifles repaired with ECS at two different pairs o
