Clinical aspects of invasive infections with Streptococcus dysgalactiae ssp. equisimilis in Japan: differences with respect to Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae infections.

Streptococcus dysgalactiae ssp. equisimilis (SDSE) is increasingly being identified as a pathogen responsible for invasive and non-invasive infections. We compared the clinical features of invasive SDSE infections with those of invasive infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus (GAS)) and Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus (GBS)). Active surveillance for invasive SDSE, GAS and GBS was maintained over 1 year at 142 medical institutions throughout Japan. Clinical information was collected together with isolates, which were characterized microbiologically. Tw

CRISPR interference in a Streptococcus agalactiae multi-locus sequence type 17 strain.

UNLABELLED: Group B Streptococcus (GBS), a common colonizer of the human genital and gastrointestinal tracts, is a leading cause of neonatal bacterial meningitis, which can lead to severe neurological complications. The hypervirulent serotype III, sequence type 17 (ST-17) strain COH1 is strongly associated with late-onset disease due to its unique set of virulence factors. However, genetic manipulation of ST-17 strains remains challenging, limiting the ability to study key pathogenic genes. Functional remodeling of IgM+ B cells in Streptococcus agalactiae-resistant Nile tilapia.

Streptococcus agalactiae infection remains a major constraint on the productivity of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), a species of considerable economic importance in global aquaculture. Although selective breeding programs have successfully produced tilapia strains with enhanced resistance to this pathogen, the B cell-mediated immune mechanisms underlying this resistance remain unclear. In this study, we systematically investigated differences in IgM + B cell-mediated immune responses between S. agalactiae-resistant and -susceptible Nile tilapia. Retropharyngeal abscess caused by Streptococcus agalactiae: A case report and literature review.

A previously healthy 79-year-old man who developed a retropharyngeal abscess secondary to Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections is reported. Comprehensive imaging evaluation revealed a retropharyngeal abscess due to pyogenic spondylitis was made, which progressed to an epidural abscess and descending necrotizing mediastinitis. Successful treatment with surgical drainage and antimicrobial chemotherapy suggests that with prompt diagnosis and appropriate management, outcomes can be favorable even in severe presentations. The pathogenesis of invasive GBS infection in the elderly is multifactorial

Unusual Case Report of Infective Endocarditis Due to Streptococcus Agalactiae in Lebanon.

HIGHLIGHTS: Right-sided infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae is a very rare case. It may be complicated by right-sided heart dilatation leading to right-sided heart failure.Treatment guidelines on infective endocarditis caused by this agent remain limited, prompting further study to establish definitive treatment guidance. Surgical approach and antibiotic treatments remain the empirical treatment choice. BACKGROUND: Right-sided infective endocarditis (IE) is uncommon. Furthermore, Streptococcus agalactiae (S agalactiae) rarely causes IE, with only 2% to 9% of bacteremia c

Enhanced Vulnerability of Diabetic Mice to Hypervirulent Streptococcus agalactiae ST-17 Infection.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis but has been recently isolated from non-pregnant adults with underlying medical conditions like diabetes. Despite diabetes being a key risk factor for invasive disease, the pathological consequences during GBS infection remain poorly characterized. Here, we demonstrate the pathogenicity of the GBS90356-ST17 and COH1-ST17 strains in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. We show that GBS can spread through the bloodstream and colonize several tissues, presenting a higher bacterial count i

Influence of Penicillin on Biofilm Formation by Streptococcus agalactiae Serotype Ia/CC23.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus , GBS) is a major agent of perinatal infections. Biofilms have been associated with GBS colonization and disease, as well as with infection persistence and recurrence. Although GBS remains susceptible to beta-lactams, it is still unknown how sessile cells respond to these antibiotics. Here, we evaluated the effect of different concentrations of penicillin (3-48 mg/L) on in vitro biofilm formation by four GBS strains belonging to serotype Ia/clonal complexes23 that were recovered from the oropharynx or urine of pregnant women and were previously c

Experimental Study on Streptococcus agalactiae Genotype and Erythromycin Resistance in Neonatal Sepsis.

This study aimed to evaluate Streptococcus agalactiae genotype and erythromycin resistance in neonatal sepsis. After obtaining the mothers' informed consent, trained nurses sampled 430 neonatal specimens of sepsis from the ear canal, oral cavity and umbilical cord immediately after childbirth and implemented a cross-sectional study. By Gram staining, morphology, hemolysis mode, catalase and CAMP tests, the isolate was identified as S. agalactiae. All 455 isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by the disc diffusion method. Multilocus sequence typing was used to serotype S. agalac

Genomic insights on DNase production in Streptococcus agalactiae ST17 and ST19 strains.

Streptococcus agalactiae evasion from the human defense mechanisms has been linked to the production of DNases. These were proposed to contribute to the hypervirulence of S. agalactiae ST17/capsular-type III strains, mostly associated with neonatal meningitis. We performed a comparative genomic analysis between ST17 and ST19 human strains with different cell tropism and distinct DNase production phenotypes. All S. agalactiae ST17 strains, with the exception of 2211-04, were found to display DNase activity, while the opposite scenario was observed for ST19, where 1203-05 was the only DNase(+) s

Streptococcus agalactiae and Chlamydia trachomatis detection in women without symptoms of infection.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) and Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) may be present in the female cervical canal without any symptoms of infection. Chronic chlamydial infections lead to many serious complications and perinatal infections, while the presence of GBS is a reservoir for infections of newborns or invasive streptococcal infection in adults. OBJECTIVES: To examine healthy women for C. trachomatis without symptoms from the reproductive system, assess the frequency of asymptomatic infections, detect GBS in the cervical canal, demonstrate differences in drug susceptibi

Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women in Brazil: prevalence, serotypes, and antibiotic resistance.

Brazilian data for maternal GBS colonization shows different prevalence rates. This conflicting data may be related to the absence of an official recommendation from the Federal Brazilian Health Authorities describing guidelines and protocols to perform GBS screening in pregnant women, in both public and private clinics. In the present review, we evaluated published reports addressing the prevalence of GBS in different regions of the country, methods used, and, when available, information regarding antibiotic resistance and serological typing of clinical isolates. According to this review, GBS

Characterization and antibiotic susceptibility of Streptococcus agalactiae isolates causing urinary tract infections.

Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) has been implicated in urinary tract infections but the microbiological characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibility of these strains are poorly investigated. In this study, 87 isolates recovered from urine samples of patients who had attended the Spedali Civili of Brescia (Italy) and had single organism GBS cultured were submitted to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular characterization of macrolide and levofloxacin resistance, PCR-based capsular typing and analysis of surface protein genes. By automated broth microdilution method, all isolates we

Acute Neonatal Parotitis with Late-Onset Septic Shock due to Streptococcus agalactiae.

Acute neonatal parotitis (ANP) is a very rare disease. Most cases are managed conservatively; early antibiotics and adequate hydration may reduce the need for surgery. The most common cause of ANP is Staphylococcus aureus. We report a rare case of acute neonatal parotitis with late-onset septic shock due to Streptococcus agalactiae. The diagnosis was confirmed with ultrasound and isolation of Streptococcus agalactiae from blood culture. The patient was treated successfully with 10 days of intravenous antibiotics and supportive measures. Despite being rare, streptococcal ANP should be considere

Different sequence strains of Streptococcus agalactiae elicit various levels of cytokine production.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of neonatal and obstetric sepsis and an increasingly important cause of septicemia in elderly subjects and immunocompromised patients. Our aim was to evaluate whether different genotypes of GBS may induce a different production of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. We used multilocus sequence typing to identify 71 clones isolated from asymptomatic healthy carriers and symptomatic individuals. All these clinical isolates were used to infect purified human monocytes. TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 secretion was measured. Fiftee

Prophagic DNA fragments in Streptococcus agalactiae strains and association with neonatal meningitis.

We identified-by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis at the population level followed by DNA differential display, cloning, and sequencing-three prophage DNA fragments (F5, F7, and F10) in Streptococcus agalactiae that displayed significant sequence similarity to the DNA of S. agalactiae and Streptococcus pyogenes. The F5 sequence aligned with a prophagic gene encoding the large subunit of a terminase, F7 aligned with a phage-associated cell wall hydrolase and a phage-associated lysin, and F10 aligned with a transcriptional regulator (ArpU family) and a phage-associated endonucl
