Antimicrobial resistance of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a serious problem for clinicians worldwide. The present study attempted to evaluate the susceptibility patterns of MRSA to various antimicrobials and the prevalence of inducible clindamycin resistance as well as the relevant antibiotic and antiseptic resistance genes among these isolates. Totally, 40 MRSA isolates were recovered from examined milk and meat product samples (18.60%). Multi-drug resistance (MDR) was remarkably observed among 85% of these isolates. There was a good correlation between phenotypic d

S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci such as S. epidermidis are important causes of infection of the bloodstream, cardiac valves, implanted devices, and skin, with repercussions on mortality and increased economic costs. Treatment of staphylococcal infections is made difficult by the increasing emergence of resistance to beta-lactams and other antimicrobials, including reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides. Penicillin must be used for infrequent penicillin-susceptible isolates, oxacillin and nafcillin are to be considered the major option for penicillin-resistant staphylococci, and

The natural susceptibility to 70 antibiotics of 104 strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex was examined using a microdilution procedure in Isosensitest broth. One hundred and one clinical strains designated as 'E. cloacae' were identified as E. hormaechei (n=65), E. asburiae (n=20) and E. cloacae genospecies 1 or 2 (n=16). Apart from fosfomycin susceptibility, there were only minor differences in natural antibiotic susceptibility patterns. All species were naturally sensitive or naturally sensitive and intermediate to numerous beta-lactams (e.g. carbapenems, aztreonam, acylaminopenicillin

Staphylococcus aureus is a major human pathogen causing infections ranging from mild skin infections to life-threatening systemic conditions. Clindamycin has long been used to treat serious Staphylococcus aureus infections due to its pharmacokinetic profile and ability to inhibit toxin production. However, inducible resistance to clindamycin via erythromycin ribosomal methylases encoded by erm genes poses a significant clinical challenge; it often leads to treatment failure and remains undetected by routine antimicrobial susceptibility testing. This cross-sectional study analyzed 120 non-dupli

Susceptibilities to 13 antimicrobial agents were determined by measurement of MICs for 60 isolates of Streptococcus bovis from blood cultures. Thirty-eight isolates (63.3%) had high-level resistance to erythromycin (MICs, >or=128 microg/ml). Among the 38 erythromycin-resistant strains, 21 isolates (55%) had inducible resistance to macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (iMLS isolates) and 17 (45%) had constitutive resistance to macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (cMLS isolates). Tetracycline resistance was also found among all of the erythromycin-resistant strains. None of the strains di

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in enteric bacteria continues to be detected in turkey flocks and retail products worldwide, including in Canada. However, studies assessing linkages between on-farm antimicrobial use (AMU) and the development of AMR are lacking. This study aims to identify AMU characteristics that impact the development of AMR in the indicator bacteria Escherichia coli in turkey flocks, building on the Canadian Integrated Program for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance methodology for farm-level AMU and AMR data integration. Two analytic approaches were used: (1) multivariable

Mangrove ecosystems are hotspots of biodiversity, but have been threatened by anthropogenic activities. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are nosocomial bacteria classified as high priority by the World Health Organization (WHO). Herein, we describe the identification and genomic characteristics of a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strain isolated from a highly impacted mangrove ecosystem of the northeastern Brazilian, in 2021. Genomic analysis confirmed the existence of the transposon Tn1546-vanA and clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes, such as streptogramins, t

This study aims to explore the succession of microbes carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), the relationship between heavy metal speciation and ARGs via Fenton-like reaction during composting. The results indicated that the passivation of Cu and Ni was more prominent, and the Fenton-like reaction promoted exceptionally the passivation of Zn, Ni and Mn. The removals of macrolides-lincosamids-streptogramins (MLS), aminoglycoside and tetracycline resistance genes were induced with the composting process, but the relative abundance of bacitracin resistance genes increased. Additionally, Pro

The emergence of drug-resistant bacterial pathogens has placed renewed emphasis on the total chemical synthesis of novel antibacterials. Tetracyclines, macrolides, streptogramins and lincosamides are now accessible through flexible and general synthetic routes. Pleuromutilins (antibiotics based on the fungal metabolite pleuromutilin) have remained resistant to this approach, in large part due to the difficulties encountered in the de novo construction of the decahydro-3a,9-propanocyclopenta[8]annulene skeleton. Here we present a platform for the total synthesis of pleuromutilins that provides

Multidrug resistance has been detected in the animal and zoonotic human pathogen Rhodococcus equi after mass macrolide/rifampin antibioprophylaxis in endemically affected equine farms in the United States. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) R. equi emerged upon acquisition of pRERm46, a conjugative plasmid conferring resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, and, as we describe, tetracycline. Phylogenomic analyses indicate that the increasing prevalence of MDR R. equi since it was first documented in 2002 is caused by a clone, R. equi 2287, attributable to coselection of pRErm46 with a ch

Efflux mechanisms that account for resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents are commonly found in a wide range of bacteria. Two major groups of efflux systems are known, specific exporters and transporters conferring multidrug resistance (MDR). The MDR systems are able to remove antimicrobials of different classes from the bacterial cell and occasionally play a role in the intrinsic resistance of some bacteria to certain antimicrobials. Their genes are commonly located on the bacterial chromosome. In contrast, the genes coding for specific efflux systems are often associated with mobile

The resistance of bacteria to antibiotics, particularly those used for first-line therapy, is an increasing cause for concern. In the UK, the prevalence of resistance to methicillin and mupirocin in Staphylococcus aureus, and to penicillin and macrolides in Streptococcus pneumoniae, appear to be increasing. There has also been an increase in the number of hospitals where glycopeptide-resistant enterococci are known to have been isolated. The increases in methicillin-resistant S. aureus and glycopeptide-resistant enterococci are due, in part, to the inter-hospital spread of epidemic strains. Al

We characterized Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from cystic fibrosis (CF) patients during screening for multidrug-resistant strains to determine mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and conduct spa typing. We investigated 53 S. aureus isolates collected from different CF patients, excluding multiple isolates from the same patient. Genotypic characterization was based on spa type (protein A); staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) type for S. aureus resistant to methicillin (methicillin-resistant S. aureus [MRSA]); and resistance to the most common macrolides, lincosamides, and

Structurally unrelated antibiotics MLSB (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) compromised with clinically resistant pathogens because of the cross-resistance resulting from the structural modification of rRNA A2058. The structure-activity relationships of a novel 3-O-descladinose azithromycin chemotype conjugating with nucleobases were fully explored with the aid of engineered E. coli SQ110DTC and SQ110LPTD. The conjugates of macrolides with nucleobases, especially adenine, displayed antibacterial superiority over telithromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin against rRNA A2058/2059-mutated en

Aspects of bacterial resistance to the major classes of antimicrobials used in veterinary dermatology are presented in this review. Resistance of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin antibiotics, chloramphenicol, mupirocin, sulphonamides, trimethoprim, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones and β-lactam antibiotics are depicted with respect to the different mechanisms of acquired and intrinsic resistance. Examples are given for the three major resistance mechanisms, enzymatic inactivation, decreased intracellular drug accumulation and target

Streptococcus canis, a multi-host pathogen commonly isolated from dogs and cats has been occasionally reported in severe cases of human infection. This study aimed to explore the genetic diversity, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and pathogenicity of S. canis isolates collected between 2004-2021, in Italy. Fifty-five S. canis isolates from clinical cases in domestic animals were investigated for susceptibility to antibiotics and then characterized for sequence type (ST), virulence profile, and antimicrobial-resistant genes through whole genome sequencing (WGS). All isolates were susceptible to
