Combined PLIBEL and RULA assessment of ergonomic risks across 12 operating room nursing procedures: a cross-sectional observational study.

Operating room (OR) nurses face elevated risks of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) due to sustained awkward postures, heavy patient handling, and prolonged static loading. However, procedure-level ergonomic risk profiles across the full spectrum of OR nursing tasks remain inadequately characterized. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 25 OR nurses in a tertiary hospital in Baoding, China. Twelve common nursing procedures were systematically evaluated using the Swedish Ergonomic Hazard Identification Method (PLIBEL) for qualitative hazard screening and the Ra

Mechanism by which mechanical stimulation regulates chondrocyte apoptosis and matrix metabolism via primary cilia to delay osteoarthritis progression.

OBJECTIVES: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common chronic degenerative diseases, with chondrocyte apoptosis and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation as the major pathological changes. The mechanical stimulation can attenuate chondrocyte apoptosis and promote ECM synthesis, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the role of primary cilia (PC) in mediating the effects of mechanical stimulation on OA progression. METHODS: In vivo, conditional knockout mice lacking intraflagellar transport 88 (IFT88flox/flox IFT88 knockout; i.e., primary c

Common Pediatric Otolaryngology Procedures: Ergonomic Considerations.

Background Otolaryngologists in high-volume children's hospitals developed their operating room workflow practices based on the factors of safety, efficiency, and surgeon preference. Recent data show important benefits and potential reduced risks of proper ergonomic positioning for surgeons to prevent injury. These data suggest that the current operating room workflow practices, in addition to prior training, should be monitored and hopefully improved for surgeons' health. Surprisingly, recent studies have suggested the benefits of standing versus sitting on cognitive function. Objective This

The shipboard Beirut terrorist bombing experience: a historical account and recommendations for preparedness in events of mass neurological injuries.

On a Sunday morning at 06:22 on October 23, 1983, in Beirut, Lebanon, a semitrailer filled with TNT sped through the guarded barrier into the ground floor of the Civilian Aviation Authority and exploded, killing and wounding US Marines from the 1st Battalion 8th Regiment (2nd Division), as well as the battalion surgeon and deployed corpsmen. The truck bomb explosion, estimated to be the equivalent of 21,000 lbs of TNT, and regarded as the largest nonnuclear explosion since World War II, caused what was then the most lethal single-day death toll for the US Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo J

Factors associated with perceived healthcare access difficulties among older adults in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: In Türkiye, the demand for healthcare services is rising quickly due to the country's aging population, which calls for a review of the sustainability, equity, and accessibility of its healthcare system. The aging population brings a number of structural and individual problems in terms of access to healthcare services. The success of active aging policies, health outcomes, and the quality of life of the elderly are all significantly correlated with access to healthcare services. Therefore, examining the barriers to healthcare that older adults face will help develop more focused h

The Prone Position During Helicopter Transport of Critically Ill Patients: A Case Series from North Norway.

OBJECTIVES: Prone positioning improves oxygenation and survival in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Transport of intubated patients in the prone position is considered high risk, particularly during air medical transport, where patient access is limited. Evidence on prolonged helicopter transport in the prone position remains limited. We aimed to describe helicopter transport of intubated patients with severe ARDS in the prone position in North Norway. METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective case series of six consecutive adult patients with sever

A retrospective evaluation of supine pelvic radiography image quality using centring points and anatomical axial rotation, including reliability of measurements (ARLEX-P STUDY).

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic radiographs are commonly used for the investigation of a variety of conditions. Comparison between examinations requires a consistent radiographic technique but variations in image quality and radiographic centring points are frequently reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to establish the amount of variation in the radiographic centring point (RCP) and pelvic axial rotation (PAR), with a secondary aim of reporting the reliability of such measures. METHODS: Using a previously acquired imaging archive, 633 adult pelvis/hip radiographs were identified on a

Concordant GRADE-3 Truncal Ataxia and Ocular Laterodeviation in Acute Medullary Stroke.

Background: Severe truncal ataxia associated with an inability to sit up without assistance (STA grade 3) is frequent in patients with central acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) involving the brainstem or cerebellum. When these patients have nystagmus, central HINTS excludes peripheral lesions; however, additional localization and lateralization signs are helpful, not only to resolve the peripheral versus central vestibular lesion dilemma, but to zero in on a precise lesion localization/lateralization to the lateral medulla, the most common ischemic lesion localization associated with an initiall

Extensive thoracic spontaneous epidural hematoma presenting with position-induced transient paraplegia: successful conservative management in the resource limited settings.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare condition with an estimated incidence of 0.1 per 100,000 individuals. It is usually characterized by sudden spinal pain followed by rapidly progressive neurological deficits. Surgical treatment is generally indicated if a patient presents with neurological deficits. We report a case of SSEH presenting with neurological deficits relieved after position change, recovering without surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 73-year-old woman developed sudden, severe pain in the neck, back, lumbar region, and abdomen while sitting

In praise of anesthesia: Two case studies of pain and suffering during major surgical procedures with and without anesthesia in the United States Civil War-1861-65.

Background The United States Civil War (1861-1865) pitted the more populous industrialized North (Union) against the mainly agricultural slaveholding South (Confederacy). This conflict cost an enormous number of lives, with recent estimates mentioning a total mortality greater than 700,000 combatants [1]. Although sulfuric ether (ETH) and chloroform (CHL) were available since Morton's use of the former in 1846 and the employment of the latter in 1847, and even though inhalational agents were used in Crimean war (1853-1856) and the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the United States Civil War g

New device permitting non-invasive reversal of fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion: ex-vivo and in-vivo study.

OBJECTIVE: One of the drawbacks of fetal endoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO) for congenital diaphragmatic hernia is the need for a second invasive intervention to re-establish airway patency. The 'Smart-TO' device is a new balloon for FETO that deflates spontaneously when placed in a strong magnetic field, therefore overcoming the need for a second procedure. The safety and efficacy of this device have not yet been demonstrated. The aim of this study was to investigate the reversibility, local side effects and occlusiveness of the Smart-TO balloon, both in a simulated in-utero environment and

Pressure ulcer prevention.

The purpose of this collective review is to outline the predisposing factors in the development of pressure ulcers and to identify a pressure ulcer prevention program. The most frequent sites for pressure ulcers are areas of skin overlying bony prominences. There are four critical factors contributing to the development of pressure ulcers: pressure, shearing forces, friction, and moisture. Pressure is now viewed as the single most important etiologic factor in pressure ulcer formation. Prolonged immobilization, sensory deficit, circulatory disturbances, and poor nutrition have been identified

Nursing care for chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy survivors: A literature review.

Chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy is an immunotherapy that involves genetically modifying the patient's own T cells to express a chimeric antigen receptor, enabling them to recognize and destroy cancer cells. This treatment has revolutionized the prognosis and management of hematological malignancies, leading to a significant increase in long-term survivors. However, there is limited evidence regarding late sequelae and post-treatment care due to the recent emergence of this therapy. The rapid advancement of CAR-T therapies has created opportunities for advanced practice nurses
