Telomere length and stroke recurrence after ischemic stroke and TIA.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Shortening telomere length (TL), as an indicator of aging, has been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and incident stroke. However, there are limited data relating to the association between TL and recurrent stroke. METHODS: Patients from the Third China National Stroke Registry who had whole genome sequencing (WGS) were selected. TL was estimated using TelSeq based on binary sequence alignment/map files derived from WGS data. Cox proportional hazards regression models were performed to assess the association of TL with recurrent stroke. RESUL

Stroke-like lesions in mitochondrial disease may resemble ischemic stroke.

The patient is a 73-y-male who was referred after a fall without losing consciousness or secessus. Clinical exam revealed disorientation, ophthalmoparesis, hemianopia to the left, left hemineglect, hypoacusis, quadruparesis, general wasting, generally reduced tendon reflexes, mild rigor, occasional myoclonic jerks of the right lower limb, and ataxia of the left lower limb. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a stroke-like lesion (SLL), generalized atrophy, white matter lesions, and ponsgliosis. The previous history was positive for diabetes, hypoacusis, arterial hypertension, hype

Post-stroke seizures: risk factors and management after ischemic stroke.

Stroke is the leading cause of epilepsy in the elderly, ahead of degenerative diseases, tumors and head injuries. It constitutes a significant complication and a considerable comorbidity. The aim of our study was to describe the main factors implicated in the occurrence of post-stroke seizures and to identify the predictors of seizure recurrence. We conducted a descriptive, retrospective, monocentric study from January 2010 to December 2019, including patients who presented seizures following an ischemic stroke. We classified these seizures according to the International League Against Epileps

Neuroanatomical correlates of stroke-associated infection and stroke-induced immunodepression.

BACKGROUND: Infections represent the most frequent medical complications in stroke patients. Their main determinants are dysphagia and a transient state of immunodepression. We analyzed whether distinct anatomical brain regions were associated with the occurrence of stroke-associated infections or immunodepression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 106 patients with acute ischemic stroke, we evaluated the incidence of pneumonia, urinary tract infection, or other infections together with the characterization of biomarkers of immunodepression. Twenty control subjects served to provide reference values.

Arterial ischemic stroke risk factors: the International Pediatric Stroke Study.

OBJECTIVE: To describe presumptive risk factors (RFs) for childhood arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) and explore their relationship with presentation, age, geography, and infarct characteristics. METHODS: Children (29 days-18 years) were prospectively enrolled in the International Pediatric Stroke Study. Risk factors, defined conditions thought to be associated with childhood AIS, were divided into 10 categories. Chi-square tests were used to compare RFs prevalence across regions and age; logistic regression was used to determine whether RFs were associated with particular features at presentat

Who does well after a stroke? The Sydney stroke study.

Research addressing positive outcomes one year after stroke has been limited. The sample comprised 125 participants with complete Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale scores at baseline ( approximately 4 months after ischaemic stroke) and at follow-up (1 year later), 31 persons were defined as having a favourable outcome (an MMSE score of >or=28/30 and combined ADL/IADL score equal to 14/14 at follow-up) and 94 as having a poorer outcome. Predictors of a favourable outcome following stroke included being

Amiloride reduces stroke and renalinjury in stroke-prone hypertensive rats.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported that the mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists spironolactone and eplerenone markedly reduce proteinuria and vascular injury in saline-drinking stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP). Presently, we examined whether amiloride, an epithelial sodium channel blocker, would also protect against pathology in these rats. METHODS: In acute studies, saline-drinking SHRSP (n = 5) were instrumented with radiotelemetry blood pressure (BP) probes and housed in metabolic cages. Mean arterial pressure and electrolyte excretion were quantified over the 24-h p

Chemogenetic modulation in stroke recovery: A promising stroke therapy approach.

Stroke remains a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality worldwide, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies to enhance recovery. Traditional rehabilitation approaches, including physical therapy and pharmacological interventions, often provide limited functional improvement. Neuromodulation has emerged as a promising strategy to promote post-stroke recovery by enhancing neuroplasticity and functional reorganization. Among various neuromodulatory techniques, chemogenetics, particularly Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs), offers precise, cell-type

European Stroke Organisation (ESO) guideline on visual impairment in stroke.

Visual impairment due to stroke is common. However, controversy exists on how best to screen for visual impairment, the timing at which to screen, and on the optimal management of the varying types of visual impairment. This European Stroke Organisation (ESO) guideline provides evidence-based recommendations to assist clinicians in decision-making on screening methods, timing of screening and assessment and management options in adult stroke survivors. The target audience for this guideline is health care providers involved in stroke care from prehospital screening, in stroke units and rehabil

Factors associated with migraine aura mimicking stroke in code stroke.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine with aura (MA) is a frequent stroke simulator that can lead to erroneous diagnosis and subsequent unnecessary acute or secondary prevention treatments. We analyzed clinical and laboratory data of migraine with aura and ischemic stroke patients to detect differences that could help in the diagnosis. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a consecutive register of code strokes between January 2005 and June 2020. Diagnosis of ischemic stroke or MA was collected. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to test associations between clinical and blood data with

Vertigo and Ischemic Stroke after Hyperextension (Beauty Parlour Stroke syndrome).

Beauty parlour stroke syndrome is a stroke syndrome that occurs secondary to hyperextension of the neck due to compression of the vertebral artery in the atlanto-occipital region. It was first defined as "pearl beauty stroke syndrome" in 1992 by Weintraub et al. Vertigo syndrome caused by cervical region pathologies, bad posture of the neck and/or trauma [1]. We present a young, 23-year-old patient who has no disease, no trauma history nor substance-drug use. He was diagnosed with vertigo that started after going to the barber's and then had an infarction in the cerebellum.
