This paper describes a case of aelurostrongylosis in a four-month old female domestic cat (Felis catus) from South Banat, Serbia. The kitten that had died suddenly without signs of illness was autopsied in the Veterinary Specialised Institute "Pančevo". The macroscopic finding was typical of granulomatous pneumonia and subsequently, histopathology revealed verminous pneumonia. Based on the parasite morphology, it was confirmed that the lung lesions were caused by Aelurostrongylus abstrusus. The present finding contributes to the knowledge of the prevalence of this underestimated parasite in th

BACKGROUND: The parasitic nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum causes severe clinical signs in dogs. The disease is often challenging because infected animals are often presented with clinical signs overlapping those of other diseases.
METHODS: The present article describes six angiostrongylosis cases (Cases 1-6) that represent key examples of how canine angiostrongylosis may be extremely confounding. The six animals presented clinical signs compatible with canine angiostrongylosis but they were subjected to clinical examinations for other diseases (e.g. dirofilariosis or immune-mediated disorder

Cases of canine neural angiostrongylosis (NA) with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) evaluations in the peer-reviewed literature were tabulated. All cases were from Australia. A retrospective cohort of 59 dogs was contrasted with a series of 22 new cases where NA was diagnosed by the presence of both eosinophilic pleocytosis and anti-Angiostrongylus cantonensis immunloglobulins (IgG) in CSF, determined by ELISA or Western blot. Both cohorts were drawn from south east Queensland and Sydney. The retrospective cohort comprised mostly pups presented for hind limb weakness with hyperaesthesia, a mixture of

We present the first, probably autocton, case of abdominal angiostrongyliasis in Rio de Janeiro State. The patient presented initially with fever of unknown origin and severe eosinophilia developing acute abdomen due to small bowel perfuration, peritonitis, hepatic necrosis and sepsis. At the laparotomy a segment of small bowel was ressected and a liver biopsy was performed. Histopatology revealed the presence of an intra-arterial nematode, eosinophilic arteritis and granuloma. It is discussed the clinicopathological aspects of this rare and potentially severe disease that has not an establish

A survey was conducted of gastrointestinal nematode infections and trypanosomosis in Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) goats from the savanna region of the country. Animals were screened at two markets, Gboko and Akpagher, from the beginning of April until the end of September, coinciding with the end of the dry season and the first 5 months of the wet season. Of 1054 goats that were examined, 80.5% carried gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes belonging to the genera Haemonchus (61.0%), Oesophagostomum (21.0%) and Trichostrongylus (17.9%). Faecal egg counts (FEC) increased very slowly but significa

Elephants harbour intestinal nematode infections, particularly cyathostomine nematodes (Cyathostomini: Strongylidae). Monitoring helminths in rare and endemic species is crucial, as infections can contribute to population declines. The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), a subspecies of the Asian elephant, is native exclusively to the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. The studies on nematodes of Sumatran elephants remain limited. In this study, three cyathostomine nematodes not previously reported from Indonesia - Quilonia renniei, Murshidia (Murshidia) falcifera, and M. (M.) murshida

Domestic pigs serve as significant hosts and reservoirs for multiple parasite species, some specific to pigs and many others of zoonotic importance. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of intestinal parasites in pigs within a rural area in northeastern Argentina. We also examined demographic information, breeding conditions, and exposure factors associated with parasite presence. Pig feces were subjected to coprological examination through flotation and sedimentation techniques. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen technique was employed to examine oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. In total, 29 family f

Knowledge about parasitic diseases of wildlife will help us to understand the dynamics of parasites and their effects on host populations. The capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) is the largest living rodent in the world, and its distribution is associated with the presence of tropical and subtropical wetlands in South America. The Los Padres Lake Integral Reserve (LPLIR) is an important conservation zone in the pampean region of Argentina. One of the emblematic species found within the reserve is the capybara. The objective of this study was to determine the gastrointestinal parasites presen

BACKGROUND: Parasitic worms represent a substantial disease burden in animals and humans worldwide. The control of parasitic roundworms (nematodes) relies heavily on the use of anthelmintic drugs. However, widespread drug resistance in nematodes seriously compromises the effectiveness of many anthelmintics around the world. Thus, there is a need to discover new drugs, with unique modes of action, against parasites.
METHODS: Here, we synthesised and tested 74 selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) for in vitro-activity on parasitic larvae of Haemonchus contortus (barber's pole worm), o

Angiostrongylus vasorum is a metastrongylid nematode that parasitizes the pulmonary arteries and right heart of canids, being the etiological agent of canine angiostrongylosis, a disease of growing veterinary concern due to its expanding geographic distribution and the involvement of domestic and wild hosts. In Brazil, the parasite has been reported mainly in domestic dogs and some wild canids, and its occurrence in mustelids has been documented only once previously. This study reports the first occurrence of A. vasorum infecting a lesser grison (Galictis cuja) in Brazil. The mustelid was foun

The emerging zoonotic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis causes severe neural angiostrongyliasis in both humans and animals. The parasite has been reported in Spain. We detected A. cantonensis in rats and gastropods from the Campania region, southern Italy, demonstrating its broad distribution on the southern coast of Europe.

We assessed the prevalence of the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, in rats and snails in Toamasina, Madagascar, using molecular techniques. Although no human cases of neuroangiostrongyliasis have been reported in Madagascar, the pathogen's presence in definitive hosts (2.5%, 2/78) and intermediate hosts (26.9%, 35/130) reveals active circulation and potential zoonotic risk.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a mollusk-borne parasitic nematode originating in Southeast Asia. Commonly known as the rat lungworm, it uses rats as definitive hosts, though other mammals, including humans, can be infected and typically suffer from neurological disorders. This study focuses on the parasite's presence in its gastropod intermediate hosts in several urban and rural areas in Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia. Samples of Achatina (Lissachatina) fulica (161) and Pomacea sp. (90) were collected in eight localities in Banda Aceh. Additionally, 531 edible freshwater snails belonging to

AIM: The rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, has recently been found in the city of Valencia, parasitizing rats, Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus, its natural definitive hosts. This is the first finding of this zoonotic nematode in continental Europe. After informing local and national health authorities, the collection of local terrestrial snails took place with the aim of elucidating their potential role as intermediate hosts of A. cantonensis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 145 terrestrial snails, belonging to the species Cernuella virgata, Cornu aspersum, Eobania vermiculata, O

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis, commonly known as the rat lungworm, is a metastrongyloid nematode found primarily not only in tropical and subtropical regions but also in temperate areas and considered the leading cause of eosinophilic meningitis in humans. Synanthropic rodents such as Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus are the most frequent definitive hosts of this parasite.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The presence of this parasite was detected in the pulmonary arteries of three specimens of R. norvegicus in the city of Buenos Aires representing the species' southernmost known record in n

Angiostrongylus cantonensis, or the rat lungworm, is the causative agent of human angiostrongyliasis associated with eosinophilic meningitis or meningoencephalitis. Additionally, this nematode can cause ocular angiostrongyliasis, though this is rare. The worm can cause permanent damage to the affected eye and sometimes even blindness. Genetic characterization of the worm from clinical samples is limited. In the present study, we investigated the genetics of A. cantonensis recovered from a patient's eye in Thailand. We sequenced two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, or COI, a

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is an invasive nematode parasite that causes eosinophilic meningitis in many vertebrate hosts, including humans. This parasite is spreading rapidly through the six continents, with Europe being the final frontier. Sentinel surveillance may be a cost-effective strategy to monitor the pathogen's arrival to new geographical regions. Necropsy, followed by tissue digestion, is often used to recover helminth parasites from vertebrate host tissues, however, to detect brain parasites, this protocol is poorly utilized. Our brain digestion protocol is easily performed and 1)

A new study by Varyani et al. identifies that macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is required to mount a strong type 2 immune response in the gut. Such immune response is required to properly expel the helminth Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, for example by activating goblet cells to secrete RELM-β.
