Neuropsychological tests are useful for predicting comorbidities of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbidities of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's spectrum (PS) disorder, can affect the long-term prognosis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict comorbidities in the early stage of the disease. This study aimed to predict the comorbidities of iNPH using neuropsychological tests and cognitive performance evaluation. MATERIALS & METHODS: Forty-nine patients with possible iNPH were divided into three groups: iNPH without AD or PS comorbidity (group-1), iNPH with AD com

Inhibitory Control in Young Healthy Adults - a tDCS Study.

Inhibitory control plays a role in the behavior selection and detection of conflicts. Defects in inhibitory control are an integral part of many neuropsychiatric disorders and the possibilities of influencing it are the subject of active study. Studies have shown and confirmed the activation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during the Stroop task and other tests involving response inhibition. Non-invasive brain stimulation is an emerging and actively developing group of methods used in cognitive research. In the present study, we used non-invasive, painless, and delicate transcran

Linking executive dysfunction to gait initiation deficits in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

INTRODUCTION: Freezing of gait (FoG) is a disabling symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) that often emerges during gait initiation and is linked to executive dysfunction. We investigated whether cognitive inhibition and processing speed are associated with gait initiation deficits in people with PD with and without FoG. METHODS: Seventy-nine individuals with PD (50 PD + FoG, 29 PD-FoG) and 37 healthy older adults were evaluated. Executive functions were assessed using the Victoria Stroop test and the Trail Making Test, with scores converted to age- and education-adjusted z-scores. Gait initiat

Blood Pressure Lowering Medication, Visit-to-Visit Blood Pressure Variability, and Cognitive Function in Old Age.

BACKGROUND: Visit-to-visit blood pressure (BP) variability is associated with cognitive impairment. We assessed to what extent the association between BP variability and cognitive impairment is mediated by the association of BP lowering medication (BPLM) with both BP variability and cognition. METHODS: We studied 5,606 participants from the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER). BP was measured every 3 months during 3.2 years; BP variability was defined as the SD of BP measurements during follow-up. Cognitive function was assessed at baseline and during follow-up u

Stroop interference in adults with dyslexia.

Prior research on developmental dyslexia using Stroop tasks with young participants has found increased interference in participants with dyslexia relative to controls. Here we extend these findings to adult participants, and introduce a novel test of Stroop incongruity, whereby the color names appeared on an object colored in the incongruent color. The results imply that impaired inhibitory and executive attentional mechanisms are still deficient in adults with dyslexia and that other forms of attentional mechanisms, such as object-based attention, might also be impaired in dyslexia. Dyslexia

Response inhibition and avoidance of virtual obstacles during gait in healthy young and older adults.

Adjustments of preplanned steps are essential for fall avoidance and require response inhibition. Still, inhibition is rarely tested under conditions resembling daily living. We evaluated the ability of young and older adults to modify ongoing walking movements using a novel precision step inhibition (PSI) task combined with an auditory Stroop task. Healthy young (YA, n=12) and older (OA, n=12) adults performed the PSI task at 4 individualized difficulty levels, as a single and dual task (DT). Subjects walked on a treadmill by stepping on virtual stepping stones, unless these changed color dur

A Representational Similarity Analysis of Cognitive Control during Color-Word Stroop.

Progress in understanding the neural bases of cognitive control has been supported by the paradigmatic color-word Stroop task, in which a target response (color name) must be selected over a more automatic, yet potentially incongruent, distractor response (word). For this paradigm, models have postulated complementary coding schemes: dorsomedial frontal cortex (DMFC) is proposed to evaluate the demand for control via incongruency-related coding, whereas dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) is proposed to implement control via goal and target-related coding. Yet, mapping these theorized schemes to measured

Game changer? Cognitive-motor effects of VR exergaming compared to video-based training.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming enhances several cognitive domains through multisensory engagement. Acute cognitive benefits of VR are established, but evidence for direct comparisons with non-immersive controls is limited. This study aimed to determine whether VR exercise provides additional cognitive and cognitive-motor benefits beyond a matched non-immersive active stick-fight video (SFV) intervention, and whether effects persist after training. METHODS: In this randomized quasi-experimental study, N = 55 healthy adults (VR: n = 30; SFV: n = 25; 25.5 ± 7.1 years; 41.8
