Developing strategies to control schistosomiasis morbidity in nonenrolled school-age children: experience from Egypt.

Schistosomiasis is a major health problem in school-age children in much of the tropical world. They harbour the most intense infections for both Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium. In Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) has implemented a successful school-based treatment programme in which children are screened and those found to be infected treated with praziquantel. High nonenrolment rates in some rural areas have a negative impact on the coverage of this programme and on its ability to reduce transmission in the community. The main aim of our study was to introduce and

A test of the hopelessness theory of depression in unemployed young adults.

Recent research has failed to support the prediction based on hopelessness theory that hopelessness mediates the full relationship between attributional style for negative outcomes and depression. A re-examination of hopelessness theory, however, provides the hypothesis that a measure of hopelessness containing items directly relevant to an ongoing negative life-event will mediate the full relationship between attributional style for negative outcomes and depression. Hopelessness theory was extended with a second hypothesis that attributional style for positive outcomes is involved in the aeti

Validation of a transdiagnostic psychopathology ecological momentary assessment protocol in a university student sample.

Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) collects real-time data in daily life, enhancing ecological validity and reducing recall bias. An EMA questionnaire that measures symptoms and transdiagnostic factors was recently developed with network modeling purposes. This study examines this EMA protocol's (a) subjective experience (e.g., burden, item clarity, survey frequency adequacy); (b) compliance, dropout, and predictors thereof; (c) the variability of EMA items across and within participants; and (d) the relations between EMA items and baseline standardized psychopathology questionnaires. Socio-affective skills and early academic disengagement in higher education: a sequential mediation model of emotion regulation and academic self-efficacy.

Student disengagement in higher education is increasingly conceptualized as a gradual, psychologically mediated process that affects academic functioning and persistence, rather than a discrete academic decision. Within this framework, early academic disengagement (previously conceptualized as silent dropout processes) refers to early psychological disengagement that precedes formal withdrawal. This study examined the psychological pathways linking socio-affective skills to early academic disengagement risk through emotion regulation and academic self-efficacy. A cross-sectional design was emp

A Comparison of Gaming Behavior between Teens and Preteens and its Association with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Academic Performance in Children.

BACKGROUND: Video games have emerged as a significant and timely source of entertainment among teens and preteens, primarily targeting the younger generation while also gaining popularity among the older population. Numerous studies have demonstrated that symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression can impact children's academic performance and may result in school dropout. However, to date, no research has examined these three conditions specifically in Jordanian high school students. Therefore, this study aims to compare the gaming behavior of teens and preteens and its relationship to memor

Prevalence of anxiety and depression among pharmacy students at a University in South Africa: A cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: With approximately one-third of university students reporting symptoms consistent with at least one mental disorder at some point during their academic journey, mental health has become a global public health issue. The implications of these mental health statistics are grave, as anxiety and depression affect student well-being and correlate significantly with academic performance and retention rates. Students afflicted with mental health concerns are recognised to demonstrate lower engagement in their studies and higher dropout rates, which poses challenges for educational insti

Why do residents leave general surgery? The hidden problem in today's programs.

OBJECTIVE: Much has been written and discussed about the reasons for reduced interest in surgery, but few institutions have chosen to examine the loss or attrition of general surgery residents from their own programs. In preparation for an upcoming Residency Review Committee analysis of our program, we took the opportunity to examine the reasons for attrition in our own institution. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: During the years 1990 to 2003, 120 categorical residents were admitted into our general surgery residency program. Residents who matched into preliminary positions or non-5-year

A school refusal case with biological rhythm disturbance and melatonin therapy.

An 18-year-old male high school student with school refusal and circadian rhythm disturbance is reported. At 17 years of age, he was unable to attend school because of a reversal of the daily rhythm and a moderate depressive feeling. Other circadian rhythms, including deep body temperature (DBT), and plasma melatonin, cortisol and beta-endorphin, also showed quite different or abnormal curves compared with those in normal controls. He was treated with methyl B12 and melatonin, which normalized the circadian rhythm, i.e. it became entrained to a 24-h period, and the DBT and hormonal rhythms bec

Study of dog population dynamics and rabies awareness in Thailand using a school-based participatory research approach.

Rabies is a neglected disease primarily related to dog-mediated transmission to humans. Accurate dog demographic and dynamic data are essential for effectively planning and evaluating population management strategies when designing interventions to prevent rabies. However, in Thailand, longitudinal survey data regarding dog population size are scarce. A school-based participatory research (SBPR) approach was conducted to survey owned dogs for one year in four high-risk provinces (Chiang Rai, Surin, Chonburi, and Songkhla) of Thailand, aiming to understand dog population dynamics and raise awar

[School refusal and dropping out of school: positioning regarding a Swiss perspective].

This article deals with refusal to attend school and dropping out of school from the point of view of child and adolescent psychiatry and psychology, in German speaking countries and from the perspective of Swiss schools and their administrative bodies. General epidemiological data on refusal to attend school show that approximately 5% of children and adolescents are likely to try to avoid attending school at some point. There is very little data available on the frequency of school drop-out. In the past two years (2011 and 2012), approximately 2% of all patients seen for the first time at the

Consequences of school closures due to COVID-19 in DRC, Nigeria, Senegal, and Uganda.

In 2020 and 2021, Governments across the globe instituted school closures to reduce social interaction and interrupt COVID-19 transmission. We examined the consequences of school closures due to COVID-19 across four sub-Saharan African countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Nigeria, Senegal, and Uganda. We conducted a qualitative study among key informants including policymakers, school heads, students, parents, civil society representatives, and local leaders. The assessment of the consequences of school closures was informed by the Diffusion of Innovations theory which informed t

School factors as moderators of the relationship between physical child abuse and pathways of antisocial behavior.

Physical child abuse is a predictor of antisocial behavior in adolescence and adulthood. Few studies have investigated factors that moderate the risk of physical child abuse for later occurring outcomes, including antisocial behavior. This analysis uses data from the Lehigh Longitudinal Study to investigate the prediction of antisocial behavior from physical child abuse and the buffering role of 3 school-related factors (i.e., school commitment, school dropout, and IQ), which are hypothesized to change the course of antisocial behavior from childhood into the adult years. Results show an assoc

The long-term effects of school dropout and GED attainment on substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic research suggests that 14% of the population do not complete high school, and dropout has been linked to mental health conditions, substance use, chronic health problems, and criminal behavior. Few studies have assessed whether attainment of the general education development (GED) credential is protective from substance use. PURPOSE: To assess the long-term outcomes of school dropout and GED attainment on past year substance use disorders, age of onset, and current smoking status. METHODS: Longitudinal data were included for lifetime substance users who participated

Girls and Young Women in Community Sport: A South Australian Perspective.

Girls' and young women's engagement and disengagement in physical activity has been well documented in Western culture. Sport plays a pivotal role in the development of behaviours that promote physical activity, particularly through commitment to team and individual goal attainment, socialisation, and feelings of belonging and self-identity. Community sport in Australia is the dominant pathway into state, national, and elite international competition. The importance of community sport in the lives of girls and young women cannot be overstated, irrespective of individual long-term sporting goal

Effectiveness of applied relaxation method vs splint in treatment of temporomandibular disorders in Finnish students.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) include pain and dysfunction in masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints (TMJs). Applied relaxation (AR) is a coping skill that may be applicable for treatment of TMD. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this randomised, controlled study was to evaluate the effectiveness of AR as compared to stabilisation splint (SS), for treatment of TMD during 12-month follow-up. METHODS: The data were derived from 96 university students seeking treatment due to TMD symptoms at Finnish Student Health Service in Finland. The subjects were randomly divided into two t

Uncertainty-Aware Multimodal Gait Representation Learning for Scoliosis Screening.

Early scoliosis screening enables timely intervention and may prevent disease progression. However, gait-based screening remains challenging: abnormalities are often subtle, labeled data are limited, and multimodal analysis must handle cross-modal discrepancy and missing modalities. To address these challenges, we propose Uncertainty-Aware Multimodal Gait Representation Learning (UMGRL), a cross-modal gait representation learning framework that transfers knowledge from large-scale gait data to scoliosis screening. To learn transferable representations robust to missing modalities, we develop a
