OBJECTIVES: We investigated the imaging characteristics of sublingual gland herniation (SLH) and its occurrence, using CT and MRI.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed the imaging characteristics and occurrence of SLH in 969 pairs of CT and MRI.

OBJECTIVE: A plunging ranula is a pseudocystic collection of mucin extravasated from the sublingual gland into the floor of mouth and through the mylohyoid muscle into the neck. While the lining of a ranula is non-secreting and resection of the sublingual gland is adequate for simple sublingual mucoceles, many surgeons attempt to address plunging ranulas with extensive transoral and transcervical dissections. Intraoral schwannoma is a rare entity. Tongue has been reported as the most common oral site. Those involving salivary glands are unusual and parotid gland is the usual site. Literature search revealed only one case of schwannoma involving the sublingual gland. Hence, this is a presentation of another case of sublingual gland schwannoma with a review of literature, in a young female of 21 years old.

The presence of morphological differences in the sublingual gland of male and female adult rats was determined by morphometry. Absolute and relative glandular mass was 21% lower and 31% higher, respectively, in females than in males. Hemangiomas are the most common lesions of the major salivary glands during infancy and early childhood. Changes in blood flow dynamic within hemangioma results in thrombus and phleboliths. There have been a number of reports of hemangiomas with phleboliths in parotid and submandibular glands. We present the first case of a hemangioma with multiple phleboliths in the subligual gland as a cause of submental opacity, and discussed the diagnosis of radiopaque masses in the sublingual and submental regions.

The purpose of this work is to estimate optimum surgical treatment of ranula according to the type of the lesion. Nine patients with ranula surgically treated between 1989 and 2000 were investigated retrospectively. Six patients had sublingual type ranula and three had submandibular type. In five cases including recurrence cases, the sublingual gland was excised. Marsupialization was performed for four cases, which were superficial, protruded and within 2 cm of diameter.
