Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the lip: a case report and comprehensive literature review.

Malignant epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (MEH), also known as high-risk epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, is a low- to intermediate-grade vascular malignancy originally described as a vascular neoplasm of endothelial origin. This very rare vascular neoplasm has been described mainly in soft tissue, but also in various organs and locations, including the liver, lung, brain, colon, lymph nodes, peritoneum, spleen, bone, skin, heart, soft tissues, and vascular system. Several cases have been described in the head and neck, including the submandibular gland, parotid gland, nasal cavity, paraphar

A Very Rare Salivary Gland Tumor: Sialoblastoma.

Children seldom develop salivary gland tumors, which account for less than 5% of all salivary gland tumors. In total, 10%-15% of these neoplasms arise from the submandibular, sublingual, and small salivary glands, with the parotid gland accounting for the majority of cases. We describe a case of sialoblastoma in a 2-year-old female Ethiopian child who had a history of right cheek swelling gradually from birth. The mass had a firm consistency and was fungating in the center. In the right parotid gland and masticator space, a large lobulated irregular heterogeneously enhancing mass was discovere

Coexistence of Lymphoepithelial Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland and Submandibular Gland Pleomorphic Adenoma.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma is a variant of undifferentiated carcinoma with characteristic dense lymphoid stroma in which nasopharynx is site of predilection. Racial and geographic association and Epstein-Barr virus positivity in endemic areas are other characteristics of this rare neoplasm. Lymphoepithelial carcinoma accounts for only 0.4% of malignant salivary gland tumors. The authors present a patient with Epstein-Barr virus positive lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in a nonendemic region. Besides this, synchronous pleomorphic adenoma in the contralateral submandibular gland

Congenital Pleomorphic Adenoma in a SubmandibularGland of a Newborn- A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pleomorphic adenoma is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm in children, which can be treated by simple excision. This tumor is rarely included in the differential diagnosis of solid submandibular masses in children. In the neonates, congenital pleomorphic adenoma usually presents in the nasopharynx. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice and recurrence is not expected. We report what appears to be the first case of congenital pleomorphic adenoma in the submandibular region in a one-day-old newborn. CASE REPORT: The case of a one-day-old term baby is presented with a 5x2

Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Palatal Minor Salivary Gland: An Unusual Case With Imaging and Cytological Correlation.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common salivary gland neoplasm, accounting for a significant proportion of both major and minor salivary gland tumors. While it most frequently arises from the parotid or submandibular glands, it can occasionally present as an intraoral mass over the palate or lip when originating from the minor salivary glands. A palatal pleomorphic adenoma typically presents as a painless, gradually enlarging mass on the posterolateral aspect of the palate. This case highlights the importance of considering pleomorphic adenoma in the differential diagnosis of palatal swellings

Neuroendocrine tumors of the submandibular gland: literature review and report of a case.

Primary salivary neuroendocrine neoplasms are extremely rare, with only 1 case of carcinoid tumor and 7 cases of primary large-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas having been reported. Salivary small-cell neuroendocrine carcinomas are more frequent, accounting for less than 2% of all salivary malignancies. In addition to a literature review on the subject, the authors describe a rare case of malignant intermediate-grade neuroendocrine tumor of the submandibular gland.

Widespread metachronous carcinoid tumour metastases to the head and neck: a unique presentation.

Carcinoid tumours are usually slow-growing, neuroendocrine neoplasms that primarily affect the gastrointestinal tract and bronchial tree. Although relatively rare, isolated, single metastasis to the head and neck has been reported. We present a unique case of 6 metachronous carcinoid metastases to both parotid glands, the left submandibular gland, upper lip, and thyroid, over 3 years. To our knowledge, this widespread presentation in the head and neck has not previously been reported.

Sarcomatoid salivary duct carcinoma of the submandibular gland: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid salivary duct carcinoma (sarcomatoid SDC) is a rare subtype of SDC. We encountered 1 case of sarcomatoid SDC that developed from a submandibular gland pleomorphic adenoma, and we herein report our findings. CASE: A 42-year-old female had tumentia and pain in the right submental area, and therefore she underwent a close examination, wherein a right submandibular gland neoplasm was detected. Surgery for removing the right submandibular gland was performed in addition to neck dissection. Cytology showed typical findings of conventional SDC. Moreover, isolated and scattere

Expression of transforming growth factor-alpha in adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary gland.

BACKGROUND: Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) is expressed in both normal and malignant epithelial cells. Although the expression of TGF-alpha has been extensively studied in some human epithelial neoplasms, its expression in adenoid cystic carcinomas (ACCs) of the salivary gland has not been reported. METHODS: This study used an immunohistochemical technique to assess the expression of TGF-alpha in 40 ACC specimens from the salivary glands, seven specimens from labial minor salivary glands adjacent to mucoceles, and five specimens from normal submandibular glands. RESULTS: In the

[Noncontrast computed tomography in the diagnosis of tumors of the major salivary glands].

Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) of the major salivary glands was made in 127 patients, which revealed 95 space-occupying lesions (88 intraglandular and 7 extraglandular ones). Pleomorphic tumors of the parotid glands are solitary, round, high-density (29.6 +/- 4.2 HU) masses with well-defined, smooth margins. Salivary cysts were characterized by the presence of a dense capsule; the density of cyst contents was 8.0 +/- 2.0 HU. Salivary lipomas had a characteristic tomographic pattern due to the presence of adipose tissue; the lipoma density was -108.3 +/- 7.8 HU. Malignant parotid tumors

Pleomorphic Adenoma Originating from Heterotopic Salivary Tissue of the Upper Neck: A Diagnostic Pitfall.

Pleomorphic adenoma directly arising in the neck is thought to originate from heterotopic salivary gland tissue. In this article, we present the case of a 55-year-old female patient with a histologically proven pleomorphic adenoma located at the left mandibular angle, anteriorly to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and posteroinferiorly to the submandibular gland. As the patient also had an ipsilateral thyroid nodule with coarse calcifications, clinical and radiological features suggested a possible level II metastatic lymph node. However, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology and pos

Tumors of salivary gland are very uncommon in children and comprise of <5% of all salivary gland tumors. Most of these neoplasms originate in the parotid gland with 10-15% arising from the submandibular, sublingual, and minor salivary glands. We report a case of sialoblastoma in an 8-year-old male child who presented with a history of slowly progressive swelling of the parotid gland since birth, which was soft to firm in consistency and mobile in all directions. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well encapsulated tumor located in the superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. Fine needle as

Whole salivary flow rates following submandibular gland resection.

BACKGROUND: Patients with head and neck neoplasms receive therapeutic neck dissections which may include the submandibular gland unilaterally or bilaterally. The clinical consequences of salivary gland resection could be reduced salivary output, altered cariogenic microflora, and increased incidence of dental caries. METHODS: This investigation evaluated whole salivary flow rates of patients who had received unilateral (n = 29) or bilateral (n = 8) submandibular gland resections and compared them with noncancer control subjects (n = 29). RESULTS: Unstimulated and stimulated (paraffin) flow r

Hybrid carcinoma of the salivary gland: salivary duct adenocarcinoma adenoid cystic carcinoma.

AIMS: Hybrid tumours of the salivary gland are rare neoplasms that have been described only in the parotid and palate. Their recognition is important particularly when the component tumours have different biological behaviours. The occurrence of a submandibular hybrid tumour has not been reported. METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a case of a 36-year-old woman with a hybrid carcinoma composed of salivary duct adenocarcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right submandibular gland. There was no evidence of a pre-existing or concurrent pleomorphic adenoma. The presence of the two components

Preoperative ultrasound risk stratification of submandibular gland lesions: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Submandibular gland lesions are rare and diagnostically challenging because benign neoplasms, inflammatory mass lesions, carcinomas, and lymphomas may present with overlapping sonographic features. While ultrasound is central to the preoperative work-up, most malignancy prediction models were developed in mixed major salivary gland cohorts dominated by parotid tumors. Their performance in the submandibular gland remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent submandibulectomy for an intraglandular lesion at a tertiary refe

Dedifferentiated epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma: analysis of a rare entity based on a case report and literature review.

Dedifferentiated epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (DEMC) is very rare salivary gland neoplasm with only anecdotal reports. We present an analysis of DEMC, based on a case and review of literature. Our patient, an 85-year-old woman, presented with a submandibular mass of 5 years duration that was increasing in size over a 5-week period. Histologically, there were areas of typical epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma, with dedifferentiation of both components, manifesting morphologically as salivary duct carcinoma and areas of myoepithelial carcinoma. A review of literature revealed 21 previousl

Contribution to the study of the vasculature of submandibular and sublingual glands and lymph nodes of rats by corrosion cast technique combined with scanning electron microscopy.

The study of anatomical structures in their normal state allows the identification of pathological changes that can occur in them. Angiogenesis and the vasculature have been widely studied, mainly because of their association with the development of neoplasms. One of the methods applied for such purposes is the corrosion cast technique, which provides a copy of the vessels with normal as well as pathological structures. The replica of the vasculature provided by this technique allows the three-dimensional analysis of vessels by means of scanning electron microscopy. The aim of the present stud

Cytomorphological features of lymphoepithelial carcinoma of submandibular gland in an adolescent male.

A case of lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) occurring in right submandibular gland of a 13-year-old Indian male is presented, wherein the lesion unveiled itself only after multiple fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures. This unusual neoplasm has high frequency of occurrence in Eskimos and a predilection for the parotid gland. The aspirates obtained were highly cellular comprising tight clusters of atypical epithelial cells with admixture of lymphocytes. Histopathological examination of the resected submandibular gland and lymph node chain was consistent with the diagnosis of LEC. Immunohistoc
